Abstract
This thesis intends to analyze the social and cultural characteristics of America in the 1910s to 1930s portrayed in the paintings of Florine Stettheimer(1871-1944). Although Stettheimer has engaged in a wide range of activities as an artist for over 30 years, most of the preceding studies on her have been partially conducted within the context of feminism and a more in-depth evaluation has not yet been made. Considering such limitations, this thesis started with the purpose of reexamining Stettheimer’s work by exploring the characteristics of early 20th century America illustrated in her oeuvre. Stettheimer’s inclination to embody the era she experienced is closely related to the social and economic situation of the United States. In the 1910s, when she began her career as an artist, the United States was undergoing major social changes in the midst of an unprecedented economic growth due to industrialization. Stettheimer came to a mutual understanding with her colleague artists and shared the idea of representing the society they witnessed themselves. Besides, the avant-garde art movement that valued the sovereignty of the artist over the realistic representation of appearance had an significant influence on Stettheimer’s artistic style. As a result, Stettheimer pursued to depict the positive energy of the rapidly changing society through autonomous expression. In order to closely examine Stettheimer’s paintings, this study divided her works into four categories of images according to the social and cultural characteristics expressed within. First of all, Stettheimer conveyed the dynamic energy of an industrial city through the image of New York. The skyscrapers made of high-rise buildings and the scenes of consumption activities effectively showed the dynamic atmosphere of the city. Secondly, Stettheimer showed the newly emerged entertainment culture by depicting the images of American’s daily lives. As people started to enjoy leisure time in the industrial era, various entertainment activities began to gain public interest. Stettheimer vividly expressed such activities using bright colors and light brush strokes. Thirdly, she not only captured the clothing styles of Americans at the time, but also the sexual hierarchy inherent in society through the images of family and friends. At the turn of the century, the United States seemed to enter a period of progress. However, the sexual hierarchy that upheld traditional gender roles was still deeply rooted in society. Stettheimer intended to reflect such reality in her family and friend portraitures instead of simply reproducing their appearance. Finally, Stettheimer’s self-portrait images revealed both the life of a middle-class American citizen who enjoyed the recreational activities of mass culture and a modern woman who started to gain self-consciousness as an independent individual. This study aimed to examine Stettheimer’s entire paintings from a broad perspective, going beyond the existing studies that dealt with a limited number of works in a feminist point of view. Through such analysis, this study has come to a conclusion that Stettheimer was an artist who constantly made an effort to pictorially record the era which she lived in. In other words, not only was she an observer and a witness of her time, but also an artist in line with the times who explored the characteristics of contemporary American society through autonomous expression. The significance of this discovery to art history can be found in that it expanded the possibility of interpretation of the artist and her paintings by presenting a single coherent argument that runs through Stettheimer’s full collection of paintings.
