Abstract
Violin Sonata in C minor No. 3 Op. Violin Sonata in C minor No. 3 Op. This thesis is about Violin Sonata in C minor No. 3 Op. 45 by Edvard Grieg. Before going in in-depth study, this study observes his life, his musical characteristics including strengths and weaknesses as a composer and the characteristics of the Romantic sonata form. Although Grieg's compositional style reflects the Germanic training he received at the Leipzig Conservatory, Grieg incorporated Norwegian folk elements in his musical works in order to create Norwegian identity in music. Violin Sonata in C minor No. 3 Op. 45 is written in 1887 after Grieg's great success as a composer. The first movement is in a sonata form featuring three main themes, a brief chromatic development section, and a brief coda in a fast tempo. to be. The second movement is in ternary form consisting of A-B-A' section displays the contrast among the three sections. The third movement is in a free sonata form without a development section, featuring two themes and a brief coda. Although this third sonata still retains Norwegian nationalistic tendencies such as ornamental notes and pedal points, as well as folk dance rhythms such as harling and gangar, characteristics of the Romantic sonata stand out throughout the whole work : emphasis on the melody, 19th-century romantic chords (free use of borrowed chords, diminished seventh chord, augmented sixth chords, Neapolitan chords, etc.). In the first movement, the second theme is recapitulated in the tonic major instead of the home key and the recurrence of the home key is assigned to the third theme. The third movement features the lower third relation which was commonly seen in Romantic works, instead of using the relative key for the second theme in the minor-key sonatas which was the convention of the Classical sonata form, the modulation occurred to the tonic major in the middle of the coda, and the final cadence of the whole sonata on the tonic major rather than the home key. While Grieg's Violin Sonata No. 2, written in his early twenties, relied too much on folk elements, No. 3 displays Grieg's maturity by harmonizing the Norwegin national elements and the Romantic harmonic languages and forms.
