Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Trends in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Sector

Abstract

Formerly considered a niche investment practice, the integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues has emerged as the solution for long-term sustainability and ethical management. In Korea, the demand for ESG is ever-greater, in the private and public sectors alike. In view of the dynamic growth of ESG, there is an impending need for literature that capture the most recent trends and provide academic evidence for sector-specific ESG, to bridge the widening gap between practice and theory. Therefore, this paper studies recent ESG trends in Korea’s most critical industry, the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) industry. In the literature review, this paper maps the ESG landscape in two specific contexts, ESG in Korea and ESG in the ICT industry, in aims to serve as grounds for understanding ESG trends. Then, in order to capture ESG trends, this paper conducts a qualitative data analysis on the ESG reports publicly disclosed by Korean ICT companies. It assesses the ESG reports and employs the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) approach of topic modeling in Python, a statistical model of natural language processing that allows the systemic analysis of multiple documents through the extraction of key topics. The results of the analysis are visualized in word clouds. As a result, this paper extracts topics and subsequent keywords of environmental, social and governance issues that reflect the ESG trends of Korean ICT companies. It is inferred that ICT companies have included environmental issues into their agendas in view of the recent national frameworks for greenhouse gas emissions reduction. It is also implied that the COVID-19 pandemic has had great impact on the ESG practices of ICT firms in terms of human rights, privacy and data. Lastly, this paper addresses the limitations to the study and suggests future avenues for research. All in all, this paper aims to provide timely contributions to the growing discussions on sector-specific ESG, ESG of Korean ICT firms and the development of ESG in Korea.;최근 지속가능성과 윤리 경영의 해법으로 환경, 사회, 거버넌스(ESG) 투자가 주목받고있다. 민간 부문뿐 아니라 공공 부문에서도 ESG의 관심도는 계속해서 높아지고있으며 산업 내 ESG는 매우 빠르게 확산되고 있다. 하지만 이론으로서 ESG는 부족한 실정이며, 실무와 이론의 격차를 줄이기 위해 ESG 동향과 산업별 ESG에 대한 연구가 필요하다. 따라서 본 논문은 한국을 대표하는 산업 중 하나인 정보통신기술(ICT) 산업의 ESG 동향을 분석하고자 하였다. 우선 본 논문은 문헌 연구를 통해 국내에서의 ESG와 ICT 산업에서의 ESG라는 두가지 특정 맥락에서 살펴보았다. 이어 ESG 동향 파악을 위해 국내 ICT 기업의 ESG 보고서에서 대한 정성적 데이터 분석을 실시하였다. 토픽모델링 방법론 중 잠재 디리클레 할당 (Latent Dirichlet Allocation, 이하 LCA) 방법론을 적용하였다. 이를 통해, 구조화되지 않은 ESG 보고서에서 공통된 토픽(topic)을 추출하고 범주화하였다. 분석 결과는 워드 클라우드 형태로 시각화하였다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로, 한국 ICT 기업들의 ESG 보고서에서 추출한 토픽을 환경, 사회, 거버넌스로 분류하였으며 이를 통해 ESG 동향을 파악할 수 있었다. 한편, 최근 ICT 기업들이 온실가스 감축에 대한 압박을 받고있다는 점을 추정을 할 수 있었다. 또한 COVID-19으로 인해 인권, 프라이버시 및 데이터 측면에서 기업이 사회 측면에서 ESG 관심도는 매우 높아진 것으로 밝혀졌다. 마지막으로, 본 논문은 국내 ICT 기업의 ESG 현황을 파악하고 향후 ESG 동향 및 ICT 기업의 ESG 발전에 대한 연구 방향을 제안하였다.
