Program Annotation

Abstract

본 논문(annotation)은 필자가 석사과정 이수를 위해 지휘했던 졸업 연주회 프로그램을 분석･연구하여 학술적으로 더 깊이 이해하는 것에 목적을 두고 작성되었다. 분석 대상은 19세기 낭만시대를 대표하는 작곡가인 멘델스존 (Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, 1809-1847)의 <Sechs Lieder Op. 59 (6개의 노래)> 중 제1, 4, 5번과 현존하는 미국의 작곡가 에릭 휘태커(Eric Whitacre, b.1970-)의 <Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine (하늘을 나는 기계에 대한 레오나르도의 꿈)>이다. 멘델스존의 합창작품 중 파트송(Part-song), <Sechs Lieder Op. 59> 중 제1, 4, 5번은 모두 무반주 혼성 4부 합창곡으로 주로 호모포니로 진행한다. 가사는 공통적으로 자연에 대한 내용을 가진 서정시를 사용하였고 단순하고 간결한 유절형식으로 작곡되었다. 시의 내용과 분위기는 서정적 선율과 간결한 화성으로서 나타나며, 성부의 다양한 조합과 악상을 통해 시의 내용을 함축적으로 담아내고 있다. 현존하는 미국의 작곡가인 휘태커의 대표적인 합창곡 중 하나인 <Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine>은 무반주 혼성 5부 합창곡으로, 르네상스 시대 레오나르도 다 빈치의 하늘을 날기 위한 고민과 그의 꿈을 노래한 작품이다. 휘태커는 이 작품의 각 장면을 주요 동기들을 활용하여 가사그리기 기법 (word-painting)으로 묘사하였다. 또한 조성적인 체계의 바탕 위에 톤 클러스터 (tone clusters), 팬다이아토닉 화음(Pandiatonicism) 등의 작곡기법을 사용하여 전통과 현재적 감각의 절묘한 균형을 이루었다. 독일 낭만주의 시대를 대표하는 작곡가로서 멘델스존의 많은 작품이 연구되었지만, 그의 세속합창곡인 파트송에 대한 연구는 찾기가 쉽지 않다. 휘태커의 작품 또한 그의 대표합창곡으로 잘 알려졌지만 자주 연주되는 것에 비해 연구·분석이 부족하다. 특히 국내에서는 이러한 연구가 부족한 실정으로 실제 연주 경험에 바탕을 둔 필자의 연구가 향후 해당 작품을 접할 연주자들에게 유용하게 활용되길 바라는 목적으로 이 논문을 작성하였다.;This annotation aims to academically understand the research and analysis done for the graduation recital repertoires for the master’s program at Ewha Womans University’s School of Music. No. 1, 4 and 5 of Sechs Lieder (Six songs), Op. 59 by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-1847) who is one of the most celebrated composers of the 19th century Romantic period and Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine by an American composer Eric Whitacre (b. 1970) are analyzed for this study. Sechs Lieder, Op. 59 is a collection of six unaccompanied part-songs for four-part mixed choir by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. Numbers 1, 4, and 5 of Sechs Lieder, Op. 59 are written in homophonic style. The lyrics of these songs portray the reflections of the nature while being composed in a simple strophic form. The storyline and tone of the lyrics are eloquently conveyed through the lyrical melodies in conjunction with the concise use of harmonies and are implicitly embodied in the textures of voices and diverse musical elements, including tempo, articulation, and dynamic. Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine is an unaccompanied choral work for five-part mixed choir by an American contemporary composer Eric Whitacre. It is one of the most prominent choral works of Whitacre that describes Leonardo da Vinci's dreams and quest to fly. Whitacre depicts each scene through the use of motives by the word-painting technique. Furthermore, he utilizes compositional techniques such as tone clusters and pandiatonicism in tonality to attain an exquisite balance between the music styles of the past and the present. There are many studies on Mendelssohn’s works; however, studies on his part-songs such as Sechs Lieder, Op. 59 are hardly found. Whitacre’choral works including Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine are widely performed and appreciated, but not enough analysis studies have been done on his songs. Therefore, this research and analysis annotation aspires to contribute to any prospective conductors and performers who may encounter these works in the future.
