Abstract
;This paper conducts a study to look for ways to popularize classical music using online contents as the medium of choice. As the Internet became ubiquitous owing to the advances in digital technologies, a wide variety of online contents on classical music have emerged following a rise in the use of online platforms. In line with this recent trend, a large number of online contents are already being produced elsewhere in the world, and listening to music online free from spatial or temporal constraints has a considerable potential growth in the future. In addition, as the era of “Untact”—A Korean term referring to contactless/online formats of activities—has dawned on us due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, online performances have become an essential part of the performing arts industry. In light of these developments, this paper aims to study online contents on classical music to propose a strategy to increase the popularity of classical music. We examined the historical change of classical music contents through different time periods while paying particular attention to the audience. In so doing, it was revealed that classical music had a distinct way of communicating with the public in each era and that the methods of listening to music have diversified as time progressed. Especially, the wide availability of smartphones across all age groups owing to rapid advances in digital technologies has contributed to an increase in the consumption of online contents. Therefore, we examined currently active online classical music contents to choose the successful ones in each platform as the subject of our study. Based on the case studies on online classical music contents, the paper was able to identify the following desirable means to popularize classical music in the 21st Century. First, we should prepare a way for the public listening to music to actively express their opinions and interact real-time with each other through online platforms. User comments, a characteristic trait of online platforms, can become a means of participation, sharing, and communication that gives rise to direct communications to obtain an interactive effect. Today, interactions via online platforms can facilitate communications with the audience most effectively. Second, we should utilize vivid audiovisual materials, which can command the attention of the audience to allow for easier understanding. In addition to auditory ones, the videos available on online platforms can use subtitles and other visual materials; thus, there is a limitless potential to use a wide variety of sources. Because classical music has been considered a heavy and difficult subject, such an effort would provide a more convenient and easier access to it. Third, there should be efforts to produce creative contents for the newer, younger generation. Our lives are closely intertwined with the Internet today, and there are many contents that are tailor-made for their specific audience. Considering that the Internet will continue playing an active role in our daily lives in the future, producing contents aimed specifically for the Internet generation would be able to ensure a steady inflow of new audience. The case studies above confirmed that the contents on classical music are being applied on each platform in various ways and that such contents influence public interaction. Moreover, as the case studies examined the user comments sharing the reactions and thoughts of the audience, it became evident that a genuine interactive communication was taking place as opposed to a one-sided supply of contents across the platforms. There is a need to bring classical music to a wider audience in the 21st century; therefore, this paper attempted to properly understand the direction of flow of social changes today. Through successful case studies on online classical music contents hitherto unexplored, it became possible to identify the desirable means to popularize classical music. However, as the current available contents on the Internet only concentrate on the entertaining and interesting parts, there was a limitation to properly conveying the artistic value and depth of classical music. In addition, the relevant information contained in online contents was found lacking in accuracy and appropriate citation of its sources. Nevertheless, this study examined the aspects of online classical music contents that have not been actively discussed previously in Korea and found that it is expected to play a vital role for the newly emerging Z-generation and other members of the digital generation who will majorly constitute the future audience. We hope that this study offers a new perspective for the market of classical music performance as well as forming the basis for continued study in the future on ways to use a variety of online classical music contents.
