영화 <황금나침반(The Golden Compass)>의 음악 분석을 통한 알렉상드르 데스플라(Alexandre Desplat)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 알렉상드르 데스플라(Alexandre Desplat, 1961-)가 작곡을 담당한 영화 <황금나침반(The Golden Compass), 2007>의 음악적 특징에 관한 연구이다. 데스플라는 현재까지 할리우드에서 활발히 활동하고 있는 작곡가로서 차별화된 영화음악의 특성을 구축하였다. 그 특징으로는 다양한 악기가 혼합된 독창적인 음색을 창출함으로써 영화 전반에 걸친 분위기 및 작품의 주제를 전달한다는 점이다. 이러한 특징을 포함한 데스플라의 음악적 특성을 영화 <황금나침반>의 음악분석을 통해 알아보고자 한다. 본 연구자는 데스플라의 음악적 특징을 연구하기에 앞서 먼저 선행연구를 분석하였고, 할리우드 영화음악사를 특성에 따라 분류한 뒤 데스플라의 영화음악사적 위치를 알아보았다. 이후 그의 생애와 작품 세계를 연구하며 그만의 음악적 배경과 스타일에 대해 살펴보았다. 음악분석의 단계에서는 영화 <황금나침반>의 작품 줄거리를 발단, 전개, 위기, 절정, 결말로 나눈 뒤 음악의 인 앤 아웃에 따른 음악적 기능과 작곡가의 음악적 성향 및 특징을 정리하였다. 연구를 토대로 분석한 결과, 데스플라는 여러 악기의 조합을 통한 독창적인 음색을 구현해 가상의 공간인 평행세계를 배경으로한 작품의 환상성을 묘사하였다. 또한 극 중 인물의 내재된 감정, 의구심과 같이 화면만으로 파악이 힘든 지점을 악기 음색으로써 표현하였다. 이는 영상의 이해를 직관적으로 돕는 역할을 하는 것과 동시에 작곡가 데스플라만의 음악적 특성임을 알 수 있었다. 또한 주요 등장인물들의 모티브 설정한 뒤 변주 및 편곡을 활용해 인물의 숨겨진 의도와 영화에서 설명을 생략한 사건의 배후 등 다양한 지점을 보충 설명하였다. 이밖에도 그는 영화음악의 기능적 측면에 충실한 동작, 상황에 맞춘 음악을 사용해 장면의 역동성을 효과적으로 나타냈다. 데스플라의 <황금나침반>은 가상의 공간을 배경으로 한 작품의 장르적 특성과 밀접한 상관관계를 가졌으며 동시에 영상의 흐름에 따른 스토리 구조와도 긴밀한 관계를 이루고 있음을 알게 되었다. 본 논문의 연구를 통해 데스플라 음악의 체계적인 연구가 이루어지기를 바라는 바이다. ; This thesis is a study on the musical characteristics of <The Golden Compass, 2007>, composed by composer Alexandre Desplat (1961-). As a composer active in Hollywood to this day, Desplat has built up the characteristics of film music differentiated from the existing ones. Its characteristic is that it conveys the atmosphere throughout the film and the theme of the work by creating a unique tone mixed with various instruments. The musical characteristics of Desplat, including these characteristics, will be investigated through the musical analysis of the movie <The Golden Compass>. Prior to analyzing Desplat's musical characteristics, this researcher examined the artistic trends of Hollywood film music history and then explored Desplat's position in film music history. Afterwards, he investigated his life and the world of his work, looking into his own musical background and style. In the stage of music analysis, the plot of the work of the movie <The Golden Compass> was divided into the beginning, development, crisis, climax, and ending, and then the musical function according to the in and out of the music and the musical inclination and characteristics of the composer according to it were summarized. As a result of analysis based on research, Desplat expressed the illusion of the work against the background of a virtual space, a parallel world, by realizing an original tone through a combination of several instruments. He also expressed the difficult points in the play, such as the character's inherent emotions and doubts, which are difficult to grasp with the instrument tone. It can be seen that this plays a role in intuitively helping the understanding of the video and is the musical characteristic of the composer Desplat. In addition, after setting the motifs of the main characters, various points such as the hidden intentions of the characters and the background of the incidents that were omitted from the movie were explained using variations and arrangements. In addition, he effectively expressed the dynamics of the scene by using motion faithful to the functional aspects of film music and music tailored to the situation. This Study investigated the musical chracteristics of the movie <The Golden Compass> through such music reaserch, and hope that the systematic study of Desplat music will be carried out continuously.
