프루스트 현상을 통한 미각적 오브제 ‘SWEETCH – 행복으로의 소환’

Abstract

인간은 각자 그 형태는 다르지만 행복을 추구하며 산다. 행복에 대한 추구와 연구는 동서고금을 통해 이루어져 왔으며, 종교나 철학, 의학 등 행복이라는 문제에 무관심한 학문은 없다. 그러나 모든 생명을 가진 존재의 삶은 죽음을 향한 여정인 만큼 행복하기만 할 수는 없으며, 자연스럽게 불안감, 두려움, 슬픔, 무력감 등의 감정이 만들어내는 부정적인 관념을 우리에게 내재시킨다. 이러한 부정적인 관념에 대한 자기이해의 과정을 거치지 못한 사람은 자기주관의 일관성이 결여되고, 이는 사회적인 문제로도 이어질 수 있다. 이러한 면에서 예술은 연약한 인간의 정신세계의 근원적인 자기이해를 돕기 위한 매개체가 되며, 작가와 관람자 모두에게 그들이 언어로 설명해내지 못하는 마음의 결핍을 채워준다. 예술은 우리의 삶을 있는 그대로가 아닌 그것의 가능성에 대해 표현하기 때문이다. 본 연구자는 이러한 인간의 불안하고 슬픈 감정의 기억이 만들어내는 부정적인 관념이미지를 긍정적으로 전환시켜 시각적으로 표현함으로서 인간의 삶을 향해 이해의 손길을 내미는 예술의 순기능을 작동하며, 본인만의 고유한 시각예술세계를 구축하고자 하였다. 이러한 관념의 긍정적인 전환, 즉 기억의 긍정적 재구성을 위한 시각표현방법을 개발하기 위하여 인간의 기억과 감각, 상징 및 이미지에 관한 고찰을 시작으로 기억이미지의 재현, 그리고 프루스트 현상과 연관된 여러 문헌연구를 통해 이론적 고찰이 선행되었고, 이를 바탕으로 달콤한 행복감을 불러일으키는 미각적 표현에 집중한 작품연구를 병행하였다. 먼저 문헌연구에서는 기억에 관한 여러 학자의 의견과 문헌을 종합하여 기억의 저장 및 인출 등 기억이 진행되는 과정의 고찰과 그 과정 가운데 기억이 재구성될 수 있는지의 여부를 확인하였는데, 특정 기억과 연결된 감각은 그와 연결된 감정을 동반하는 기억을 소환한다는 사실과, 기억의 응집체인 상징은 개인적인 경험과 심상을 타고 또 다른 관념이미지를 만들어낸다는 것, 그리고 이미지의 재현은 경험과 기억에 기반하며, 재현된 이미지는 감각의 전이를 일으킬 수 있음을 확인하였다. 또한 회상이 일어날 때는 기억의 재응고화가 일어나 기존 기억에 대한 수정 및 제거가 가능해진다는 점, 그리고 이 모든 과정의 시작은 감각을 통한다는 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 이를 기반으로 하여 기억과 연결된 프루스트 현상과 이를 통한 미각적 표현방법에 대해 집중적인 연구를 진행하였는데, 미각은 감정이 덧입혀진 회상을 불러올 수 있다는 것을 확인함과 동시에, 프루스트 현상에 의한 회상은 다른 기억에 비해 감정이 동반되어 주관적인 해석이 가능하므로 기억의 재구성이 더욱 용이하다는 사실을 알아내었다. 그리고 프루스트 현상은 하나의 기표로 이중기의를 가지게 되는 독특한 의미작용 체계를 가지고 있음을 발견하고, 이를 프루스트 의미작용이라 명하며, 이를 통해 현재와 과거를 동시에 떠올리게 하여 새로운 관념이미지로 융합시키는 기억의 긍정적 재구성을 위한 기제로 사용할 가능성을 타진하였다. 그리고 그것은 미각적 오브제, 그중에서도 단맛을 표현하는 미각적 오브제로 발현되었다.‘단맛’은 동물의 생존본능을 통해 독이 없는 안전하고 좋은 맛으로 인식되며 진화되었고, 단맛을 느낄 시에는 세로토닌(serotonin)이라는 신경전달물질에 의해 긍정적이고 행복감을 느끼게 된다는 과학적인 근거를 확인한 바, 단맛의 시각적 재현은 기억의 긍정적인 재구성을 위한 적절한 미각적 표현임을 알 수 있었기 때문이다. 미각적 오브제는 시각에서 미각으로 감각의 전이를 통해 맛의 기억을 떠올리게 하는 것으로, 그 형태, 컬러, 재질 등의 조화로운 구성으로 미각이미지를 재현할 수 있으며 이는 단순히 미각을 자극하는 이미지의 재현이 아니라, 행복했던 추억과 달콤한 기억을 불러오는 긍정적인 행복감의 상징적 매개체로써 의미를 갖는 것이다. 본 연구자는 단맛을 상상하게 하는 미각적 오브제 SWEETCH를 통하여 달콤한 맛이 연상시키는 특유의 안정감과 행복감으로 인하여 보는 이로 하여금 현재와 과거의 이중기억을 정서적으로 강하게 융합하게 함으로써, 미각적 오브제와 함께 제시된 다른 기억을 긍정적으로 전환할 수 있게 하였다. 작품연구는, 앞서 문헌 연구의 과정에서 연구된 내용을 근거로 하여 작품 제작에 필요한 여러 작품실험으로 연구를 진행하고, 이를 통해 시각예술에 있어서 기억의 긍정적인 재구성, 즉 프루스트 현상을 일으키는 미각적 오브제를 위한 표현 방법을 최종적으로 제안하였다. 연구작품에서는 긍정적인 관념이미지로의 전환을 표현하기 위해 먼저 불안감과 슬픔 등의 부정적인 관념의 요소를 시각적으로 표현하였다. 주로 연필로 반복적인 흔적을 남기거나 배경을 어둡게 채우는 방법을 사용하고, 불안감과 슬픔 등의 부정적 관념의 요소를 느낄 수 있는 상징적 오브제를 찾아 도색 및 배열하였다. 이어서 연필의 흔적을 지우개로 지우고, 리본으로 묶거나 인형 및 책으로 만드는 방법들을 사용하여 긍정적인 관념으로의 전환을 표현하였는데, 이러한 방법은 점차 발전하여 오브제와 접목하게 되었다. 약봉지로 종이배를 접고 수저 위에 바다를 만들어 띄우는 식의 행복한 상상의 세계를 표현하여 긍정적인 관념이미지로의 전환을 시도하였다.‘미각적 표현’실험에서는 단맛을 시각적으로 표현한 오브제를 제작했는데, 마이구미나 초콜릿, 사탕의 형태 및 질감 등을 표현하고 행복한 소망이나 상상을 추가했다. 예를 들어 달콤새콤한 젤리베어를 확대 제작하고 가슴에 움직이는 심장을 달았고, 달고나를 확대 제작하여 음각된 모양이 마치 살아나오는 것처럼 설치하는 등 그 색채와 질감, 오브제의 정황과 맥락 등에 있어서 긍정적 관념이미지를 불러오는 내용으로 제작 및 표현하였다. 최종 작품인 ‘SWEETCH’는 본 연구를 위하여 달콤함을 뜻하는 SWEET 와 전환을 뜻하는 SWITCH를 합하여 만든 복합어이다. 이는 불안감, 슬픔 등의 부정적 관념의 요소가 내재된 기억을 달콤한 행복감이 느껴지는 긍정적인 기억으로 전환하는 작업을 의미한다. 이를 위해 앞선 연구작품의 개발과정 중 얻어낸 선별된 표현방식, 즉 달콤한 행복감을 불러오는 미각적 오브제에 부정적요소를 적절히 배치하는 방식으로 제작을 진행하였다. 긍정적이고 달콤한 행복감이 연상되는 젤리와 사탕, 설탕뽑기, 아이스크림 바, ABC초콜릿 등을 확대 제작하면서, 그 어딘가에 불안감, 슬픔, 아픔 등의 기억이 떠오를만한, 부정적 요소를 추가하였다. 이것은 관람자가 작품을 통해 공존하는 두 가지 상반된 의미를 동시에 바라보는 사이에 프루스트 의미작용이 일어나 회상이 오가며 현재와 과거의 기억이 융합되고 달콤함이 불러오는 행복감이 현재의 기억을 긍정적으로 재구성되기를 도모함이다. 본 연구인 프루스트 현상을 통한 미각적 오브제 ‘SWEETCH-행복으로의 소환’은 최종적으로 기억의 긍정적 재구성을 위한 시각표현방법의 새로운 기제로써 작품에 적용되었으며 그 결과 총 11종의 시리즈 작품으로 전시되었다. 모두 단맛의 행복감을 불러오는 미각적 오브제로써 작품의 외형이나 내부 공간에 인생의 불안감이나 아픔 등의 부정적 관념을 내포한 부정적 요소와 함께 혼합 제작되었다. SWEETCH가 설치된 전시 공간은 본 연구의 목적했던 바대로 달콤하고 행복한 느낌의 관념이미지들을 불러왔으며, 동시에 불안, 슬픔 등의 기억이 떠오르는 부정적 요소들은 달콤한 미각적 오브제들로 인해 달콤하고 행복한 정서로 이끌렸다. 이처럼 본 연구는 기억이 회상되는 과정에서 본 연구자의 작품이 긍정적인 간섭을 일으켜 이로써 잠재되어있던 불안, 슬픔 등 부정적인 관념이 느껴지는 요소를 긍정적으로 환기하는, 기억의 긍정적 재구성을 위한 시각표현방법, 즉 프루스트 현상을 통한 미각적 오브제‘SWEETCH’를 제작하여‘행복으로의 소환’이 이루어지도록 하였다. 이상의 연구 결과로 도출된 시각표현방법 SWEETCH는 단맛의 달콤한 행복감을 불러오는 미각적 오브제와 불안감, 아픔 등을 상징하는 부정적 관념을 포함한 요소를 함께 삽입 및 병치하여 기억의 긍정적 재구성을 도모한 방법이다. 다시 말해서 SWEETCH는 이 두 가지 의미가 함께 지각되어 부딪칠 때 프루스트 의미작용이 일어나 불안, 아픔 등의 부정적인 기억과 달콤한 행복의 기억은 역조건이 형성되어 부정적인 요소가 상쇄되어 긍정적인 기억으로 재구성되는 것이다. 행복한 기억을 끌어와 지금의 슬픔과 상쇄하는 것, 이것은 삶의 정서적인 균형을 잡아주며 감당할 수 없는 감정에 대하여 내면을 바라보는 기회를 제공한다. 본 연구의 작품 SWEETCH는 자기이해를 돕는 상징적 매개체가 될 것이며, 긍정적인 자아를 찾아가게 하는 길잡이가 될 것이다. 또한 본 연구 ‘SWEETCH-행복으로의 소환’은 시각예술 분야에 보다 폭넓은 작품 표현 방법을 제공할 수 있으리라 생각한다. 프루스트 현상에서의 감각의 전이를 통한 공감각적 표현을 미각적 오브제로 발전시킨 본 연구의 프루스트 의미작용을 더욱 확장 및 활용한다면, ‘SWEETCH-행복으로의 소환’은 미각뿐 아니라 다른 감각으로도 확장이 가능할 수 있을 것이다. ;All human beings pursue their own form of happiness based on their understanding of what happiness is. The human pursuit for happiness and understanding what happiness is has been ubiquitous throughout history, and no field, from religion, philosophy, to medicine, is indifferent to matters of happiness. However, since, for all living beings, life is ultimately a journey towards death, one cannot only be happy – we become embodied with negative ideas created by emotions such as anxiety, fear, sadness, and helplessness. Those who were unable to process these negative ideas through self-understanding may end up lacking consistency of thought, which can lead to social problems. In this respect, art helps the fragile human psyche gain fundamental self-understanding by becoming a medium that explains what cannot be expressed through words to fill the inexplicable emptiness of the heart in the artist and the viewer. This is because art expresses our lives not as they are, but in terms of their possibilities. This study converts the conceptual images of such negative feelings, born from the memories of anxiety and sadness, into visual expressions of positivity that engages in the affirmative function of art, that is, as an attempt to understand human life, in a unique style of visual art. To develop a method of visual expression that could achieve this positive conversion, which could be understood as a positive reconstruction of memories, this study first builds an understanding of the human memory, senses, symbols, and images, then conducts a theoretical review on the reproduction of memory images and the literature on the Proust phenomenon. Based on this theoretical background, experimental artworks were produced in parallel focusing on gustatory objects that evoke the sweet feeling of happiness. First, the literature review examined the existing studies on the human memory to understand how memories are formed and evoked, such as the storage and retrieval of memory, and whether memories could be reconstructed in this process. The review confirmed that sensations connected to specific memories could summon memories accompanying emotions; symbols, which are aggregates of memories, create additional conceptual images based on personal experience and mental imagery; and images are reconstructed based on experiences and memories, which could then cause the transference of sensations. It was also confirmed that when a memory is recalled, it becomes resolidified to enable the modification or deletion of existing memories, and the beginning of all these processes was through the senses. Based on this theoretical foundation, research was intensively conducted on the Proust phenomenon linked to memory and artistic techniques to express gustatory sensations. As a result, it was possible to confirm that taste could recall memories accompanied with emotions and that it is easier to reconstruct memories recalled through the Proust phenomenon because they are usually more emotional, thus allowing subjective interpretation. The research also found that the Proust phenomenon has a unique system that endows multiple signifies to a single signifiant, which is called Proust signification, The possibility of using this system as a mechanism for positively reconstructing memories into a new conceptual image by recalling the present and the past simultaneously was investigated, and this possibility was realized through gustatory objects, specifically those connected to sweetness. “Sweetness” was chosen because the animal instinct to survive has evolved to recognize this taste as safe (not poisonous) and good and because scientific evidence has shown that neurotransmitters cause positive and euphoric feelings when people taste sweetness. Thus, sweetness was judged to be the most suitable gustatory sensation to be reproduced visually for the positive reconstruction of memories. Gustatory objects evoke the memory of taste through the transfer of the senses from sight to taste. These objects reproduce the image of taste through a harmonious composition of shape, color, material, etc., not simply as reproductions of images that stimulate certain tastes but as a symbolic medium of positive happiness that evokes happy and sweet memories. In this study, SWEETCH, a gustatory object that makes viewers imagine the taste of sweetness, was used to make them emotionally fuse their dual memories of the past and present by evoking the unique sense of stability and happiness associated with sweetness, thereby converting the negative memory juxtaposed with the gustatory object into a positive one. The artwork study engaged in various artistic experiments based on the theoretical examination mentioned above to culminate in the proposal of a method for realizing the positive reconstruction of memory through visual art, specifically, the utilization of gustatory objects that invoke the Proust phenomenon. To realize the conversion to positive conceptual images, the artwork study first developed visual imagery of negative ideas, such as anxiety and sadness. The main techniques used for the visual imagery were leaving repetitive traces with a pencil or filling the background with dark colors, followed by painting and arranging symbolic objects that could evoke negative ideas, such as anxiety and sadness. Then, to express the conversion to a positive conceptual images, the pencil traces were erased with an eraser, and the objects were tied with ribbons or made into dolls and books. These methods were gradually developed to incorporate gustatory objects. Another experiment attempted the conversion to positive conceptual imagery by folding a medicine bag into a paper boat and floating it on a spoon containing a small ocean to express a happy imaginary world. In the “Gustatory Expression” experiment, an object visually expressing sweetness was produced by reproducing the shape and texture of jellies, chocolate, and candy, and adding happy wishes or imaginations. For example, a large sweet and sour jelly bear was produced with a moving heart attached to its chest, and a large dalgona (a sweet made by melting sugar with baking soda) was created with an engraved shape that seems to come alive. In this way, positive conceptual images were evoked through color, texture, and the setting and context of the objects. ‘SWEETCH’, which is the final product of the artwork study, is a compound word created for this study by combining SWEET and SWITCH (meaning conversion). This word refers to the process of converting memories with negative elements (such as anxiety and sadness) into positive ones that connect to sweet feelings of happiness. To this end, the method of placing negative elements along with gustatory objects that recall sweet happiness was chosen from the experimental methods used during the development process illustrated above. Jellies, candies, dalgona, icecream bars, and ABC chocolate, etc., which are associated with positive and sweet euphoria, were produced in large size, then incorporated with negative elements that could recall memories of anxiety, sadness, and pain. This composition allows Proust signification to occur as the viewers simultaneously look at objects with opposing meanings coexisting in the artwork, so that present and past memories are recalled and fused to become reconstructed positively through the happiness brought about by the representations of sweetness. In this way, this study, “Gustatory Objects Invoking the Proust Phenomenon, ‘SWEETCH - Summon to Happiness,’” applied this visual expression as a new mechanism for the positive reconstruction of memory into eleven artworks, which were exhibited as one series. All of the artworks were composed of gustatory objects that evoke happiness through the taste of sweetness, mixed with negative elements embodying negative notions, such as anxiety and pain of life, in the exterior or interior of the work. As intended by this study, the exhibition space in which SWEETCH was installed embodied conceptual images of sweet and happy feelings and, at the same time, converted the negative elements recalling memories of anxiety and sadness into sweet and happy emotions through the gustatory objects representing sweetness. Thus, the artworks created for this study positively interfered in the process of recalling memories to positively convert latent negative thoughts through a new method of visual expression for the positive reconstruction of memories, “SWEETCH” – a gustatory object that summons happiness through the Proust phenomenon. The visual expression method derived through this research, SWEETCH, promotes the positive reconstruction of memory by inserting and juxtaposing gustatory objects evoking the sweet feeling of happiness and elements of negative notions symbolizing anxiety and pain. In other words, SWEETCH reconstructs memories positively by counter negative memories with memories of sweet happiness to cancel out the negative when the two memories are simultaneously perceived through Proust signification. Bringing out happy memories to offset the present sadness creates an emotional balance and opens an opportunity for self-reflection when experiencing unmanageable emotions. SWEETCH could act as a symbolic medium to help self-understanding as well as a guide to finding the positive self. Moreover, this study, “SWEETCH - Summon to Happiness,” could contribute to expanding the methods of expression in the field of visual arts. By further expanding and utilizing this study’s use of Proust signification, which develops the multilevel expression based on Proust phenomenon’s sensory transfer into gustatory objects, it may be possible to extend “SWEETCH - Summon to Happiness” beyond the sense of taste to the realm of other senses.
