Abstract

동물 의인화 일러스트레이션은 동물을 인격체로 캐릭터화하여 표현하는 기법으로, 다양한 예술 범위에서 활용되는 비언어적 커뮤니케이션 수단이다. 의인화된 동물은 기존 인간의 형태 및 기준에서 자유롭기 때문에 물리적, 형태적으로 창의적인 표현이 가능하며, 우화의 설정을 통해 자유로운 비유나 상징이 가능하여 활용 가능성이 무한하다. 예술, 문학, 정치까지 다양한 동물들의 이미지가 우리의 문화를 대변하며 인간세계의 현실을 상징한다. 이는 19세기 산업혁명으로 인한 인쇄매체의 발달과 함께 다양한 범위에서 오랜 시간 활용되어왔다. 또한 현대에는 반려동물 문화와 동물권에 대한 인식이 발전하면서 확장된 동물 의인화 표현방식이 대중들과 보다 다양한 매체에서 적극적인 의사소통을 꾀한다. 하지만 오랜 시간 동안 작가들에 의해 한정된 동물의 사용과 캐릭터가 부여받은 상징과 성격은 대중들에게 고정된 동물의 이미지와 선입견을 반복적으로 갖게 한다. 이는 과거와 달리 동물의 실질적인 특성을 조사하여 서사의 주제에 부합하게 캐릭터를 형성시키는 것과 새로운 동물 캐릭터 등장의 필요성이 요구되어진다. 본 연구에서는 동물 의인화 일러스트레이션이 대중매체에 본격적으로 등장하기 시작한 19세기의 역사적 배경과 함께 다양한 인쇄물에서 상징화된 동물들과, 현대의 매체에서 변화된 동물 의인화의 쓰임새와 활용 목적을 살펴보았다. 이를 토대로 선행연구에서 19세기 배경의 동물 의인화 일러스트레이션을 활용해보며 의인화된 동물의 역사와 활용도를 익혔다. 또한 동물의 다양한 종과 특성에 대한 세밀한 연구가 이루어져야 함을 인식하고 본 연구 작품을 통해 현대의 매체에서 동물에 대한 정보 전달과 함께 주목받지 못했던 새로운 종의 동물 의인화 캐릭터를 출현시켰다. 또한 획일적으로만 사용되었던 동물의 이미지에 이중성과 정확한 성격을 부여하였다. 이러한 시도를 통해 나타나는 주제 구현과 교육적 효과를 모색하며 동물 의인화 일러스트레이션의 새로운 역할의 가능성을 제언하였다. 본 연구를 통해 동물 의인화 일러스트레이션을 통한 보다 심화된 의사소통의 가능성을 기대하며 동물 의인화 일러스트레이션의 표면적 가치와 의미적 가치를 함께 활용한 동물 의인화 캐릭터 개발 및 후속 연구에 도움이 되기를 기대한다. ;An anthropomorphic animal illustration is a technique that characterizes an animal as a person, which is a nonverbal means of communication used in a wide range of arts. Images of animals, ranging from art, literature and politics, represent our culture and symbolize the reality of the human world. It has been used for a long time with the development of printing media due to the industrial revolution of the 19th century. In addition, in modern times, as awareness of companion animal culture and animal rights develops, the expanded anthropomorphic expression method seeks to actively communicate with the public in more diverse media. However, the limited use of animals for a long time and the symbols and personalities endowed with characters repeatedly make the public have a fixed image and prejudices of animals. This study describes the historical background of the 19th century, when animal anthropomorphic illustrations began to appear in the mass media in earnest, and the animals symbolized in various printed materials. In this process, it was recognized that detailed research on the various species and characteristics of animals should be done. Through this, a new species of animal anthropomorphic character was developed along with the transmission of information about animals in modern media. In addition, the possibility of a new role of animal anthropomorphic illustration was suggested by giving duality to the image of an animal that was used only uniformly. Through this study, the possibility of deeper communication through animal anthropomorphic illustration was presented. It is hoped that it will be helpful for the development of animal anthropomorphic characters and subsequent research using both the superficial and semantic values of anthropomorphic animal illustrations.
