Abstract

본 논문은 필자의 석사과정 이수를 위한 리사이틀 프로그램에 관한 것으로 도미니크 아르젠토(Dominick Argento, 1927-2019)의 연가곡《Six Elizabethan Songs(엘리자베스 시대의 여섯 개의 노래)》 중 연주된 제1곡 <봄(Spring)>, 제3곡 <겨울(Winter)>, 제5곡 <디아페니아(Diaphenia)>, 제6곡 <찬미가(Hymn)>에 대한 연구이다. 아르젠토는 성악 음악에 대해 깊은 관심과 지식을 가졌으며 12개의 연가곡, 14개의 오페라, 26개의 합창곡 등은 그의 관심을 뒷받침한다. 문학에도 관심이 많았던 아르젠토는 시와 산문 등의 문학작품에 가장 적합한 형식으로 곡을 붙였다. 시의 운율과 의미를 선율과 반주부에 반영하였으며 운율과 악구의 형태를 일치시켜 작곡하였다. 이로 인해 아르젠토의 성악곡들은 높이 평가되고 있다. 이 작품은 영국 문학이 발달했던 16세기 엘리자베스 시대(1558-1603)에 쓰여진 6개의 시를 가사로 사용한 연가곡으로 각 시는 규칙적인 압운을 가지며 발랄한 봄의 모습, 경쾌한 겨울의 풍경, 사랑하는 여인에 대한 찬미와 고백, 여신을 찬양하는 내용을 주제로 작곡되었다. 그는 시의 주제와 내용에 따라 세밀한 악상기호 표기와 더불어 과감한 성악 선율의 사용, 화성적인 시도, 복잡한 리듬 형태, 다이나믹의 극단적인 변화, 반주부와 성악 선율의 유연한 결합 등 다양한 방법들로 곡의 이해와 해석을 돕는다. 또한, 아르젠토는 교회 선법과 같은 전통적인 작곡 기법과 잦은 전조로 조성을 모호하게 하는 현대적인 작곡 기법을 사용하여 고전과 현대를 적절하게 결합하여 작곡하였다.;This study aims to analyze four songs from Dominick Argento (1927-2019)’s song cycle Six Elizabethan Songs, performed in the graduation recital program for master’s degree of the author: No. 1 “Spring”, No. 3 “Winter”, No. 5 “Diaphenia”, No. 6 “Hymn.” Argento had a keen interest and knowledge of vocal music, which is supported by his twelve song cycles, fourteen operas and twenty-six choral songs. The composer, who was also interested in literature, wrote songs in the most appropriate form for literary works such as poetry and prose. He reflected the rhymes and contents of the poem in the melody and accompaniment of the songs and squared the rhymes with the format of phrase. For this reason, his vocal compositions have been highly valued. Six Elizabethan Songs, examined in this study, is a song cycle of which the lyrics were quoted from the six poetic works written in the sixteen-century Elizabethan era (1558-1603), the golden days of English literature. Each poem has regular rhymes and different themes—describing the vibrant spring, depicting the cheerful landscape of winter, praising and confessing the woman he loves, and glorifying the goddess. In order to help interpret and understand each song, Argento used various musical expressions including detailed musical symbols following the theme and content of the poem, bold vocal melodies, harmonic attempts, complicated rhythms, drastic changes in dynamics and a smooth combination of the accompaniment and vocal lines. Moreover, he composed the songs mixing classic and contemporary features effectively, using the traditional composition techniques like church modes and the modern composition technique that obscures the tonality with frequent modulations.
