In Korean, the relationship between the sentence components is indicated by the use of particles, such as i/ga, which marks the subject, and ul/lul, marking the object. However, their use in spoken Korean is rather optional. Previous research proposes that the occurrence and non-occurrence of the Korean particles i/ga and ul/lul in spoken Korean is constrained by discourse features such as focus and by semantic features such as definiteness and animacy. This constraint might pose difficulties for Bulgarian learners of Korean since Bulgarian focus and animacy features are not overtly marked, while definiteness is overtly marked by the use of the definite article. Hence this study’s goal is to investigate how Bulgarian Korean language learners perceive and produce the occurrence and non-occurrence of Korean particles i/ga and ul/lul in spoken Korean. In Chapter Ⅰ, the necessity and purpose of the study were revealed, and the research questions were set after reviewing previous studies on Korean particles i/ga and ul/lul, most of which were conducted in the area of error analysis and interlanguage. The first research question deals with the Bulgarian learners of Korean and Korean Native speakers’ perception and production of the occurrence and non-occurrence of the Korean particle i/ga and whether it would vary according to the types of linguistic context, such as focus, definiteness, animacy and group factor. The second research question deals with the Bulgarian learners of Korean and Korean Native speakers’ perception and production of the occurrence and non-occurrence of the Korean particle ul/lul and whether it would vary according to the types of linguistic context, such as focus, definiteness, animacy and group factor. Chapter Ⅱ serves as the theoretical background for this study. First, previous research on the occurrence and non-occurrence of Korean particles was reviewed. The notions of focus, definiteness, and animacy were introduced, after which the occurrence and non-occurrence of particles i/ga and ul/lul depending on those three linguistic contexts were discussed. Furthermore, the linguistic context of focus was subdivided into information focus, exclusive focus, selective focus, and replacing focus, while definiteness was subdivided into proper noun, demonstrative noun phrase, and common noun, and animacy into human, animate (non-human) subject/object and inanimate subject/object. Afterwards, the concepts of focus, definiteness, and animacy in Bulgarian were discussed as well, along with how they are realized in Bulgarian. Chapter Ⅲ describes in detail the research methodology, research participants, research instruments for collecting the participants’ data, and the data analysis method. An acceptability judgment task was used to examine the perception about the occurrence and non-occurrence of Korean particles i/ga and ul/lul by Bulgarian learners of Korean and Korean Native speakers. In addition, a conversation completion task was used to examine the Bulgarian learners of Korean and Korean Native speakers’ preferences concerning the occurrence and non-occurrence of Korean particles i/ga and ul/lul. Chapter Ⅳ highlights the results of this study. First, in the acceptability judgment task for the focus condition, Bulgarian learners of Korean and Korean native speakers showed different perceptions for the occurrence and non-occurrence of the particle i/ga. In particular, in exclusive focus, selective focus, and replacing focus, only the occurrence of the particle i/ga is grammatically correct, but the Bulgarian learners of Korean, regardless of their proficiency level, also highly accepted the sentences in which the particle i/ga did not occur. On the other hand, in these three focus subtypes, Korean native speakers tended to rate low the sentences in which the particle i/ga did not occur. In the production task in all focus subtypes, both Bulgarian learners of Korean and the Korean native speakers showed a preference for the overt marking of the particle i/ga. Such results demonstrate that Bulgarian learners of Korean in various proficiency levels, can correctly produce the particle i/ga, but it can be argued whether this is a result of their knowledge regarding the focus types. It more likely displays that Bulgarian learners of Korean feel that the overt marking of the particle i/ga is "safer". Second, in the definiteness condition, it was revealed that Bulgarian learners in the high (BLH) group and low (BLL) group, as well as Korean Native (KN) speakers group accepted both the occurrence and non-occurrence of the particle i/ga. Nonetheless, in the production task, there were differences in the preference between the three groups. Both Bulgarian Korean learner groups preferred only the overt marking of the particle i/ga, while the KN group preferred both the occurrence and non-occurrence of i/ga in the proper noun subtype, while in the demonstrative noun+noun subtype they preferred the non-occurrence of i/ga. Third, in the animacy condition, both the BLH group and the KN group showed high acceptability for the occurrence and non-occurrence of the Korean particle i/ga, while the BLL group showed lower acceptability in animate and inanimate subject subtypes. Overall, in the production task, all three groups preferred the overt marking of the particle i/ga. Forth, when it comes to the particle ul/lul, all three groups showed high acceptability for the occurrence and non-occurrence of the particle in the focus condition. However, in the production task, both the BLL group and BLH group produced the sentences only with an overtly marked particle ul/lul, while the KN group showed different preferences. In the informational focus subtype, the KN group equally preferred the overt and covert marking of ul/lul. Lastly, in the exhaustive focus and replacing focus subtypes native speakers preferred the overt marking, while in the selective focus subtype the frequency for the non-occurrence of the particle ul/lul was the highest. Fifth, in the definiteness condition, in particular in the proper noun and common noun subtypes, BLL, BLH and KN groups preferred the occurrence and non-occurrence of the particle ul/lul. However, in the demonstrative noun+noun subtype BLL group preferred the non-occurrence of ul/lul. In the production task, the BLL group and BLH group produced only sentences in which the particle ul/lul was overtly marked. In contrast, the KN group preferred both the occurrence and non-occurrence of ul/lul in proper noun and common noun subtypes, while in the demonstrative noun+noun subtype they produced sentences in which the particle ul/lul was not overtly marked. Sixth, in the animacy condition, the BLH group and KN group both highly accepted the occurrence of ul/lul but the BLL group’s acceptability rate was lower than the BLH group and KN group. Furthermore, the BLL group and BLH groups’ acceptability rate for the non-occurrence of ul/lul was lower than the KN groups’ acceptability rate. In the production task, there was a difference in the preference between the BLL group, BLH group, and KN group as well. In the human and animate object subtypes the BLL group and BLH group showed an equal preference for the occurrence and non-occurrence of the particle ul/lul. However, in the inanimate object subtype they produced sentences in which the particle ul/lul did not occur. In contrast, in the animate object subtype and inanimate object subtype, the majority of the sentences Korean native speakers produced were without the particle ul/lul. Chapter Ⅴ sums up the results of the study and discusses its significance, educational implications, and the limitations of this paper. First, in exclusive focus, selective focus, and replacing focus, in which only the occurrence of i/ga is mandatory, the BLL group and BLH group could correctly produce the particles, and the acceptability rate of the sentences in which the particle i/ga occurs was high as well. However, at the same time, they also highly rated the non-occurrence of the particle i/ga in the acceptability judgments task. This shows that Bulgarian learners of Korean did not fully master the focus condition. Second, the overall acceptability rate for the occurrence and non-occurrence of Korean particles i/ga and ul/lul in the acceptability judgment task by both Bulgarian learners of Korean and Korean native speakers was similar, but the results in the production task differed amongst the two groups, especially with regards to the proper nouns and demonstrative pronoun+noun category for the particle i/ga and information focus, demonstrative pronoun+noun, common noun category for ul/lul. Overall, Bulgarian learners of Korean, regardless of their proficiency level, showed a strong preference to use the particles i/ga and ul/lul overtly in spoken context. Third, it was shown that, unlike native Korean speakers, the animacy condition can be a significant variable in the acquisition of particles i/ga and ul/lul by Bulgarian learners of Korean, particularly if their proficiency level is on the lower spectrum.-
