Parasocial Friendship and Parasocial Love in K-pop Fandom

Abstract

To assess K-pop fans’ behavior of social media engagement, eFANgelism and forgiveness, this thesis studied parasocial relationships of fans in terms of parasocial love and parasocial friendship. The relations between the three fan behaviors and parasocial relationships are questioned to shed a light on the current success of K-pop in worldwide music industry. The results of an online survey completed by 158 U.S. resident BTS fans showed that there is a positive relationship between social media engagement and parasocial relationships as well as eFANgelism and parasocial relationships where for both behaviors, parasocial love is a stronger predictor compared to parasocial friendship. Furthermore, although the relationship between forgiveness tendencies toward transgressions about social issue committed by idols and parasocial relationships could not be analyzed to gather insights, forgiveness tendencies toward romantic relationship engagement of idols could be further analyzed, however, no significant relation was observed. By studying these fan behaviors in relation to parasocial relationships in terms of parasocial love and parasocial friendship, this study contributed to the field of parasocial relationships as well as K-pop related literature. ;본 연구는 팬들의 의사 사회적 관계와 관련하여 K-pop 팬덤에 소셜 미디어 참여, 브랜드 에반젤리즘 (eFANgelism) 및 용서 행동을 탐구하기에 초점을 맞춘다. 이 세 가지 행동은 사랑과 우정의 두 가지 의사 사회적 관계의 측면에서 탐구 된다. 미국 거주자 BTS 팬 총 158명이 실시한 온라인 설문 조사 결과에 따르면 소셜 미디어 참여와 의사 사회적 관계 및 브랜드 에반젤리즘 (eFANgelism)과 의사 사회적 관계 사이에는 긍정적인 관계가 존재하며, 이 두 행동에 있어 사랑은 우정보다 더 강한 예측 요인이라고 한다. 게다가, 아이돌 저지른 사회적 이슈에 대한 위반을 용서하는 행동과 의사 사회적 관계 사이에 관련성을 분석하여 통찰을 얻을 수는 없었지만, 아이돌이 연애하기를 용서하는 행동과 의사 사회적 관계의 관련성을 분석할 수 있으나 유의 한 관계는 관찰되지 않았다. 이 연구는 사랑과 우정의 측면에서 의사 사회적 관계와 관련된 팬의 지지적 행동과 용서 행동을 연구함으로써 K-pop 관련 문학뿐만 아니라 의사 사회적 관계 분야에 기여한다.
