Abstract

The Tal-Corset movement is a South Korean feminist current originated online in 2015. Its goals are to oppose society beauty standards and, consequently, to dismantle the concepts of femininity and gender roles by enacting the protest through physical appearance. Participants in the Tal-Corset movement cut their hair short, refuse to wear skirts, heels and other traditionally feminine clothing, and do not engage in beauty practices. Online visibility and community formation through social media are core concepts of the Tal-Corset movement. Participants are encouraged to display their journey online and to gain recognition from their peers and to inspire others to do the same. This process encourages the diffusion of information and notions about feminist concepts to a new, wider category of users. However, the lack of nuanced feminist education and the relative anonymity of social media made it possible to exacerbate some exclusionary and radical personal positions in a way that excludes differences and ultimately polices and punishes women outside of the Tal-Corset movement. The sphere in which Tal-Corset operates, however, is not strictly online, in fact, its most direct manifestations happen within the realm of physical appearance through the aforementioned refusal to engage in a feminine presentation. However, by assigning absolute gendered characteristics to certain body parts such as hair, or to clothing in the fervent attempt to eliminate gender roles, the movement exposes a tendency to parallel pre-existing oppressive connotations already employed by the patriarchy. Examining the relationship of the Tal-Corset movement with feminist flows outside Korea helps discover a connection between the foundations of the movement and recent abolitionist, exclusionary radical thinkers. The intermingling of so-called “gender critical” theory and its understanding of gender expression informed much of the movement at its inception and has continuously shaped its development in its most radical direction. While the Tal-Corset movement is a powerful indicator of the malaise and the increasing perception that young women in their late teens and twenties have of gender inequalities, its peculiar conditions, goals and modes of interactions can be easily thwarted in an essentialist, exclusivist direction. In other words, the Tal-Corset movement, in its goal of protesting against femininity and beauty standards to liberate women, fails to address its internal exclusionary and essentialist views of gender identity and presentation and operates a second policing of the bodies it wants to liberate.;탈코르셋 운동은 2015년 온라인에서 시작된 한국 페미니스트 운동이다. 탈코르셋 운동의 목표는 사회의 미적 기준을 반대하며, 사회적 여성성과 성역할의 개념을 해체하는 것이다. 탈코르셋 운동 참가자들은 머리를 짧게 자르고, 치마, 원피스, 구두와 같은 전통적으로 여성스러운 옷차림을 입는 것을 거부할뿐만 아니라, 화장과 꾸밈 노동에도 참여하지 않는다. 소셜 미디어를 통한 온라인 가시성과 커뮤니티 형성은 탈코르셋 운동의 핵심 개념이라고 볼 수 있다. 참가자들은 온라인으로 자신의 탈코르셋 과정을 전시하고 동료들로부터 인정을 받으면서 다른 사람들에게도 영향을 미치도록 노력한다는 경향이 일반적으로 일어난다. 이 과정은 페미니스트 개념에 대한 정보를 새롭고 광범위한 사용자 범주로 확산하도록 장려하기도 한다. 그러나, 올바른 페미니스트 교육의 부족과 소셜 미디어의 상대적 익명성이야말로 일부 배타적이고 급진적인 개인적 입장을 악화시키는 것을 가능하게 한다고 본다. 게다가 일부 온라인에서 활발하게 활동하는 탈코르셋 참가자들이 운동에 참가하지 않는 여성을 저격하는 경향도 존재한다. 탈코르셋이 작동하는 영역은 온라인 뿐만 아니라 오프라인도 존재한다. 실은 탈코르셋의 가장 직접적인 표현은 앞에서 언급한 여성성에 대한 거부를 외적 표현을 통해 일어난다. 그러나, 성 역할을 없애려는 시도로 머리나 옷과 같은 특정 신체 부위에 절대 성별 특성을 할당함으로써, 탈코르셋 운동은 가부장제에 의해 이미 사용된 기존의 억압적 경향을 드러내기도한다. 탈코르셋 운동과 외국 페미니스트 흐름의 관계를 살펴보는 것은 이 운동의 기반과 최근의 알려지고 있는 배타적 급진적 페미니즘의 학자들 사이의 연관성을 발견하는 데 도움이 된다. 소위 "성비평적 (gender critical)" 이론과 그의 성표현에 대한 이해와의 혼합은 탈코르셋 운동의 시작 때부터 많은 영향을 미치며 가장 급진적인 방향으로 발전을 지속적으로 형성하도록 도움이 되었다고 볼 수 있다. 탈코르셋 운동은 10대 후반과 20대 젊은 여성들이 성 불평등에 대한 인식이 증가하고 있다는 것을 보여주는 강력한 지표이지만, 그의 독특한 조건, 목표, 상호작용 방식은 본질주의적이고 배타적인 방향으로 쉽게 좌절될 수 있다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 다시 말해, 탈코르셋 운동은 여성을 해방시키기 위해 여성성과 미의 기준에 항의한다는 목표에서 성 정체성과 표현에 대한 내부 배제와 본질주의적인 시각을 다루지 못하며, 해방시키고자 하는 몸에 대한 제2의 감시 활동을 하게 되었다.
