Abstract
With the rise of critical adoption studies in recent years, scholars from various disciplines have sought to examine the nearly seventy-year history of intercountry adoption. While various scholars have published volumes about the transnational adoption community and birth mothers separately, relatively few critically examine the trauma of the birth family search and reunion process. This paper seeks to contribute to the substantial body of research about Korean adoptee reunions and identity formation, and generally adds to the interdisciplinary work in critical adoption studies. By taking transnational Korean adoptees and their birth mothers as a case study, my thesis will analyze in-depth interviews and adoption files in order to understand the specific trauma pertaining to “social death” that adoptees and birth mothers face during the reunion process.;최근 몇 년 동안 중요한 입양 연구가 증가함에 따라, 다양한 분야의 학자들은 거의 70년 가까운 국가간 입양 역사를 조사하려고 노력해왔다.
