Abstract
In the year of 2017, the annual average rainfall was just 1,054 mm (61% compared to normal year), and this drought severely influenced the groundwater level on Jeju Island, Korea, reaching its lowest value since observations began in 2001. According to the analysis result, the groundwater level significantly declined in the northwestern and southwestern regions of Jeju Island where the groundwater usage was high in 2017. The main reason for such a decline was excessive pumping to compensate for water shortages that were caused by droughts. The secondary factors that affected the groundwater level were related to precipitation and tidal effects. And, when the monitoring time resolution changed from the monthly average to daily average and hourly groundwater level data, the correlation with precipitation decreased and the tidal effect increased. These results indicated that the main factors of groundwater level fluctuation in each timescale were different. Based on the data of groundwater level in Jeju Island from 2012 to 2017, mid-term groundwater level fluctuation shows seasonal variations with yearly fluctuation and wells in this group are distributed throughout Jeju Island. The secondary factors that affected the groundwater level were related to rapid annual cyclic variations by tide. While various factors affected groundwater levels and require significant time and cost to investigate each factor, principal component analysis can be a useful tool to summarize information in large data sets to efficiently provide comprehensive information on groundwater level variation patterns. In addition, by selecting index wells that are much more vulnerable to natural disasters such as droughts and floods, we can predict groundwater level fluctuations and plan implementation.
