진화심리학의 관점에서 본 예술에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 진화심리학의 관점에서 예술을 고찰 하고자 한다. 오늘날 지배적인 예술 이론인 예술의 다원화는 예술의 다양성을 제공하는 긍정적인 면이 있지만, 예술의 경계가 모호해지는 문화적 상대주의라는 문제점에 봉착할 수 있다. 극단적인 문화적 상대주의 관점은 예술적, 미적 가치는 그 예술이 속한 문화에서 비롯되며, 예술은 순수한 문화적 생산물이라고 주장한다. 이러한 주장은 예술 정의에 있어서 문화결정주의라는 결과를 야기하며, 예술적, 미적 가치의 판단에 있어서 인간의 심적 경험을 소외시키는 결과를 가져온다. 하지만, 인간의 언어 사용과 같이 예술도 모든 인간이 영위해야 할 기본적인 본능과 연관되어 있다면, 예술의 심적 경험과 보편성은 다시 재고되어야 할 문제이다. 왜냐하면, 예술은 외적인 모습이 문화에 따라 다르게 표현된다고 할지라도 시간과 공간을 초월하는 보편적 원리가 근저에 있을 것이기 때문이다. 그 보편적 원리는 예술작품이 아닌, 인간의 마음에 내재되어 있을 것이므로 그 마음에 관한 연구가 요구된다. 진화심리학은 예술을 지향하는 인간의 마음이 진화 과정에서 본유적으로 설계되었다고 주장한다. 인간의 본성은 진화된 심리 기제들 (EPM:Evolved Psychological Mechanisms) 즉, 모듈들(Modules)로 존재한다는 것이 진화심리학의 주장이다. 즉, 인간의 본성은 여러 유형의 모듈들의 집합체이며, 이 모듈들은 인간의 진화 과정에서 자연선택을 통한 적응으로서 문제들을 해결하도록 설계된 것이라고 본다. 수백만 년 동안의 진화 과정에서 설계된 모듈의 집합체로서 인간 본성을 이해하는 진화심리학적 개념은 인간의 심리적 본성에 인류 전체를 포괄할 수 있는 보편적인 규칙성 혹은 규범들이 존재한다는 것을 함축하는 것이다. 그러므로, 진화심리학의 모듈 이론의 관점에서 예술을 연구한다는 것은 인간 본성에 예술을 포함시킨다는 것을 의미한다. 인간 본성과 예술을 관계 짓는 것은 인간을 구성하는 보편적인 특성들 속에 예술 본능을 포함시키는 것으로 그 관계는 영구적이고 필수적이라는 것을 의미 한다. 진화심리학은 모듈 이론을 통하여 예술과 인간 본성과의 밀접한 관계에 대한 과학적인 설명을 가능케 하여 예술적 동기와 예술의 가치에 대한 생물학적 해석을 시도한다. 진화심리학의 관점에서 예술을 마음의 모듈 이론과 관계 짓는 것은 세 가지 함의를 가진다. 첫 번째, 예술의 보편성에 대한 근거를 제공하며, 두 번째, 예술의 심적 경험에 대한 회복이며, 세 번째, 예술을 분석하는 이원론적 관점 (생물/문화, 자연/역사, 보편성/다양성) 에서 통합적 관점으로의 전환이다. 예술은 인간의 본성과 사회적인 것과의 조화를 통해서만 미적인 심리 기제가 활성화되는 것이다. 하지만, 이러한 인간의 예술 본능은 간혹, 사회적인 가치에만 중점을 둘 경우에는 인간 본성과의 상호작용은 불가능해 지며, 인간이 자연적으로 가지고 있는 예술에 대한 속성들이 발현되지 않을 수도 있다. 그 이유는 외부적 인 자극이 전혀 없을 때 그 속성들은 영원히 작동하지 않을 수도 있기 때문이다. 그러므로 진화심리학을 통한 인간의 예술 본능에 대한 분석은 생물학적인 인간의 본성과 그 본성의 발현을 위한 사회적 문화적 자극 환경을 모두 포괄하는 새로운 예술 분석의 통합인과모델이다.;The purpose of this thesis is to investigate art on the perspective of evolutionary psychology. Even though pluralism in art, which is the main theory of art of the present day, has a positive aspect to provide diversity to art, it poses a risk to advocate cultural relativism and to confuse the realm of art. An extreme cultural relativism denies psychological aspects of individuals toward art and urges that the artistic value of a certain type of art originates from the specific culture that it belongs to, claiming that art is only a product of culture. Those viewpoints bring about cultural determinism in defining art and also ignore individual mental experiences of art. However, if artistic nature of a human being is related with basic instincts that every human being possesses and enjoys, the universality of art should be re-speculated. Although the outer appearance of art is differently presented depending on cultures, there must be a universal and fundamental principle, transcending time and space, in the backgrounds of all kinds of artistic activities. Because the universal and fundamental principle lies inside of human mind, researches on human mind is demanded. Evolutionary psychology suggests that human mind to pursue art has been designed innately during the course of evolution. Evolutionary psychologists claim that there are evolved psychological mechanisms (EPMs), which are multiple psychological modules, in human nature. Therefore, human nature itself is the collective sum of various EPMs, which have been designed to solve various problems as human beings have evolved through natural selection and adaptation. The evolutionary psychological concept, understanding human nature as the collective sum of EPMs designed through hundred millions of years of evolution, implicates that there are certain universal rules or norms in human nature which can be applied to all humankind. To research art on the perspectives of the module theory of evolutionary psychology is to incorporate art instinct as one of human nature. By relating art with human nature, art instinct can be included into the universal human nature and the relationship should be necessary and permanent. Through the module theory, evolutionary psychology provides a successful explanation on the close relationship between art and human nature, endeavoring biological interpretations on the motivation and values of art. There are three key undertones in relating art with the module theory of mind on the viewpoint of evolutionary psychology. First, it provides a theoretical ground of universality of art. Second, restoration of mental experiences on art can be attempted through it. Last but not the least, it offers a critical shift of paradigm to analyze art from dichotomous viewpoints, including biological vs cultural, natural vs historical, or universal vs diverse, to a comprehensive one. Art becomes esthetically activated when the art instinct of human beings interacts with social activities. However, if the values of social aspects are over-emphasized, as in the modern contemporary art where social or financial power predominates, art instinct of each individual would have scarce chances to activate. It is because art instinct may fail to work permanently if there are no external stimuli at all. Thus, investigating "art instinct" based on evolutionary psychology would comprehend not only biological human innate for art but also social and cultural environments stimulating the innate, providing a new model for art analysis, the integrated causal model.
