Abstract
This research study recognized the problems and issues with the package design of medical products that are currently being sold on the market, and by focusing on household medicine products that are mainly used in more households that can be directly purchased by consumers, this research study proposed new medical product package designs based on service design concepts and methodologies. The most notable problem is that when ingesting household medicine, because most medicine packaging does not adhere to legal standards when indicating usage, ingestion method, dosage and expiration date etc., it is difficult for patients to discern this information, and because patients do not store the medication together with the packaging, proper ingestion and administration of medicine is not possible which opens up the possibility of improper use and over dosing. The details of this research study can be summarized as follows. First, a photo survey and a survey on the overall medication ingestion and administration were conducted and it was determined that it was difficult for patients to distinguish indication effects, methods and dosages of ingestion and expiration date of the medication etc. due to small writing and also the problem with the package design that results from storing the medication and packaging separately. It was possible to confirm that the needs of customers and what they considered to be the most important were the indication effects, methods and dosages of ingestion and expiration date of the medication. Based on these results, the lettering size for the indication effects, methods and dosages of ingestion and expiration date of the medication etc. crucial information were emphasized, and a Prototype I design that emphasized the color of the packaging case was produced. Second, problems with the information indication of general medical products that were sold on the market were collected through secondary research. The fact that the expiration date, manufacturing lot number etc. crucial information were not easily visible due to small writing was re-emphasized, and additional problems including use of difficult language, absence of necessary information and errors in medication ingestion methods etc. were also confirmed. Third, based on the first Prototype Ⅰ and additional information obtained from the secondary research, by deriving a core design strategy that took into consideration five factors including displaying of information, protection of product, color and font size, indication of important information and space to take notes, a second Prototype II was produced. By using a higher color saturation when compared to PrototypeⅠ the new designed was produced to emphasize medication indication effects simply based on the color used, and by taking into consideration the separation effect of the case and the blister, and blister was attached directly to the case. Also user participation was encouraged by providing a space to take notes on the inside of the case. Fourth, based on Prototypes Ⅰ and Ⅱ, feedback was received on the strengths and weaknesses and suggested areas of improvement on the designs from doctors and pharmacists in the medical industry and former directors of pharmaceutical companies and medication users to derive meaningful feedback. Commonly agreed upon strengths of the prototype packaging designs included clear indication of indication effects, methods and dosages of ingestion and expiration date of the medication etc., and there were suggestions to produce household medical products in a bundled together packaged set. However there were concerns about the inconvenience of using prototype packaging design II with feedback pointing out that using a colorful design might cause children to mistake the medicine as a toy and that caution should be taken. This research study is significant in that it solves the problems of incorrect dosage and abuse of medication due to miscommunication of information of medical product package design by using service design methods and concepts that reflect the disposable nature use of household medical products, long-term storage of medication and also patient lifestyle based on HCD (Human Centered Design) and also because this research study proposed a new medical product package design. At the same time this research study has limitations related to taking into consideration the manufacturing, sales, and distribution processes related to packaging design and also safety related to package design. While development of new pharmaceutical drugs is important, I believe that packaging design that takes into consideration ingestion methods, storage and safety must also be advanced to foster safe medicine ingestion and administration habits. By discovering methods to overcome these limitation through future follow up research, and by producing medical product packaging design that is realistic and practical to sell, it is expected that this packaging can promote a healthier medication ingestion habit and lifestyle through enabling accurate information acquisition regarding medications and proper use of medication that is appropriate for the patient.
