Abstract
This study aims to develop a model of video lectures for Mongolian learners who study Korean for Academic Purposes (KAP) in order to provide instruction for understanding and writing academic dissertations. Academic text is a genre that KAP learners often encounter. In order to understand genres of academic texts such as dissertations, one must have an awareness and knowledge of genres. A dissertation is a type of writing that has an academic framework and is typically used for the purpose of obtaining a degree. It has a strict formal structure that reflects objectivity, accuracy and logic that the researcher cannot arbitrarily set. In a graduate thesis paper, the writer reveals the formality, objectivity, accuracy, etc. of the thesis by using accepted genre conventions and linguistic expressions from the academic discourse community in the relevant major. To understand the genre characteristics of a dissertation, it is necessary to understand the underlying socio-cultural context and to acquire the standard structures and language expressions typical of a thesis paper. The socio-cultural context to be considered in a dissertation deals with understanding the relationship between the writer and the reader as a member of the academic discourse community, and to use verbal expressions that are appropriate for the purpose of communication. The communicative purpose of a dissertation is to persuade the reader to accept his or her argument. In order to accomplish this objective, we use verbal strategies through various linguistic expressions based on the formal structure of thesis papers. Hedge expressions are also used in this process. In graduate theses, hedge expressions are deliberately used as linguistic devices to mitigate the central argument so that it is acceptable to the reader. Therefore, in order to guide learners’ comprehension and writing of dissertations, KAP learners must be taught to understand the context, the system and structures of these academic papers, as well as the meaning and functions of hedge expressions. KAP learners are frequently exposed to Korean theses in master’s and doctorate-degree programs, and there are many opportunities for academic writing, particularly with writing research reports. On the other hand, overseas Korean language education sites have fewer opportunities to access Korean papers thus academic writing education has been a challenge. As a result, a video lecture model was designed for KAP learners not only in Korea but also for those who reside overseas. The research questions for this study are as follows: First, how should video lecture models be designed to instruct KAP learners to write their dissertations? Second, what resulted from the implementation of instruction via the video lecture model for academic thesis instruction designed for academic Korean language learners? Third, what can be improved through reflection after instruction, and how does the video lecture model design reflect these points? To solve the aforementioned research problems, the study was carried out in accordance with the 'ADDIE Model', a fundamental model of instructional design. Prior to designing a model of video lectures for academic thesis instruction, we first analyzed the ADDIE Model. Through the analysis of Mongolian learners' dissertations, we examined the patterns of hedge expression usage, and utilized surveys to investigate the structures of thesis papers and hedge expressions, as well as the perception of video lectures. As a result, hedge expressions were prominently used in the sections of the research results and conclusions of the thesis compositions as reflected in previous studies. However, learners demonstrated the tendencies to use the same hedge expressions in repetition as compared to native Korean speakers, and their forms lacked diversity. The learners’ recognition of the dissertation structures was evident in the majority of the papers, but the perception of hedge expressions remained at half of that level. Based on these outcomes, we were able to design the setting of educational objectives, instructional contents, and teaching and evaluation methods for academic thesis instruction. This class aims to help academic-purpose Korean learners understand the composition and verbal expressions of each mobile word according to the structure of thesis papers and apply them to writing an actual dissertation in accordance with the context of the genre. By identifying and exploring the genre of dissertations, learners can build up their recognition and knowledge of genres, and understand the context, structure, function and expressions of the paper, so that the learner can independently organize his or her own writing. Thus, an appropriate teaching and learning model was proposed for video lectures based on a genre-oriented teaching method suitable for writing education for KAP learners. In addition, the study used Zoom Cloud Meetings, a computer-based video conferencing system, for the video lectures. The computer-based video lecture system is a form in which learners participate in classes in individual, remote locations using video cameras and personal computers equipped with microphones and speakers, making it easy to access the program through the Internet. Above all, a key advantage of this system is that a teacher is able to interact with all of the learners. Since video lectures are taught at a distance, interaction between learners and professors is essential so that students do not feel isolated due to geographical distance. Thus, the teaching strategy for interaction was also considered. This class model was conducted as a video lecture and demonstrated the advantage of being able to teach Korean language learners for academic purposes domestically and abroad, transcending time and space. Therefore, it was possible to revise and supplement instruction for Korean language learners who are attending master's and doctorate courses at Mongolian graduate schools through the first implementation process. To this end, the actual instruction was executed according to the previously designed video lecture model and suggestions for improvement were proposed after the evaluation of the implementation process. For the analysis of the implementation process, we utilized the professor's reflection log, the Mongolian teacher's class observation log, and the learners' study logs. After the class, we were able to examine the participants’ levels of satisfaction in response to the video lectures, and the degree of improvement of the learners' awareness and knowledge of genre through survey and interview results. Through the execution process, the following results could be obtained: First of all, most learners did not find it difficult to access video lectures, but some learners complained of its inconvenience because they felt that it was difficult to access the lectures in the beginning of the class. The personal learning environment was an important variable because individual learners had to access the video conferencing system through the computer in order to participate in the class. All learners responded that they were generally satisfied with the video classes. They said that they wanted to take video classes in the future and were willing to recommend it to other friends, so we were able to receive positive responses to this class. The content of the class also provided sufficient learning content for students to achieve their learning goals, thus the participants all responded positively with the opinion that this class was essential and helpful. While learners generally responded that their knowledge and interest in writing their dissertations increased, they found that they lacked some confidence in applying this new knowledge in writing their own thesis papers. Despite having explicitly learned the structure, composition, and expressions of thesis papers in the class, this did not necessarily mean that this newly acquired knowledge becomes reflected in actual writing. Thus, the enactment of an actual writing process is necessary. Therefore, it was deemed desirable to increase the proportion of writing tasks that can be addressed in class at a level where learners would not feel burdened. There were many examples of feedback that expressed that communication between professors and learners went smoothly, but there were opinions that communication between learners was insufficient due to the limitations of the video lectures. In non-face-to-face situations where interaction is more required than in face-to-face situations, strategies were required to enable active interaction between learners as well as between professors and learners. Based on these results, possible improvements for the development of the video lecture model were derived, and the improvement of the classroom environment, the understanding of the class, the task type and feedback method, and the teaching strategy for interaction were supplemented and modified. Finally, a model of video lectures for academic thesis instruction was presented. This study has educational implications for developing a video lecture model for academic Korean learners in order to guide their dissertation writing. Since the professor/learning model was originally intended for video lectures rather than for face-to-face classes, it was designed to consider the problems that occur when switching from the existing face-to-face classes to non-face-to-face classes. Therefore, it is meaningful to present a video lecture model that allows remote education to be conducted for Korean language learners not only in Korea but also overseas.;본 연구는 몽골인 학문 목적 한국어 학습자를 대상으로 학위 논문 쓰기 지도를 위한 화상 강의 모형을 개발하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
