존 스튜어트 커리(John Steuart Curry)의 회화에 나타난 사회의식 연구

Abstract

This dissertation aims to study the expression mode of the social consciousness in the works of American painter John Steuart Curry. In the beginning of the 20th century, the United States experienced the two world wars and the Great Depression, and amid these upheavals, he tried to express his own voice while paying attention to the political and social situation within the country. In this study, it was regarded that the social consciousness steadily appeared in Curry’s works who worked as a painter from the late 1920s to the year of 1946. This study, therefore, intends to analyze what kind of messages regarding society were expressed throughout his works by extending the existing studies limited to the specific works or periods. Similarly to the American artists in the early 20th century trying to express what they had observed and experienced in their works based on contemporary life, Curry showed an attitude that a sort of realist tends to have. He tried to reveal his messages while drawing a painting that contains the view of society and historical consciousness through the way of expression where a clear and realistic form is taken. He stayed in several regions due to his personal reasons or the request from some institutions or organizations and showed an attitude of paying attention to the conditions of each region and reflection of society. This resulted in a mode where the consciousness of society was expressed in a variety of subjects in his works depending on the regions and periods of his stay. His paintings during his stay in Kansas showed his interest in the situation of his hometown located in a rural area and people engaged in agriculture, including his parents. Not only did he express the affluent farming villages through huge structures and livestock, but he sought to show the dignity of the farmers who made them. Moreover, he attempted to show the prosperity and status of the region by making historical figures appear in the murals of the public buildings in Kansas and expressing the local landscape idyllically. Additionally, his situation that he interacted with people who had been involved in culture and art made its appearance while he stayed in Connecticut. He, who had interacted not only with painters but also people engaged in the culture of entertainment such as playwrights and actors, caught the scenes of the backstages from an insider's perspective, which allowed him to show an attitude of pointing out the dark underbelly of the stages that the public enjoyed. Furthermore, he expressed a critical voice as he paid attention to the weak attitude of the victims of racial issues and lynching he had encountered through the press. In addition, he took a step to inform the public of the seriousness of racial issues along with artists and human rights group. Amid the situation where several policies were driven to overcome the economic crisis in 1930s, Curry was commissioned to paint a mural for a national organization in Washington D.C. He sought to inspire an enterprising move and faith in the country by figuratively expressing historical circumstances or acts of the organization in the mural. Finally, as a painter who belonged to a university and stayed in Wisconsin, he showed an active attitude toward revitalizing the districts of residence while making local symbols appear in his works or expressing the activities of the university where local development was being studied. At the same time, he sometimes pointed out the tragedy of wars by reproducing everyday scene changed by the World War II. Through the analysis of this study, it was possible to confirm that he had expressed the consciousness of society in the diversified subjects depending on the regions and moments of his stay while having paid attention to the society in the early 20th century when he was living. Moreover, it will be possible to find a significance in art history from the fact that his overall works are able to be examined extensively by classifying them by period depending on the regions of his stay.;본 논문은 미국의 미술가 존 스튜어트 커리(John Steuart Curry, 1897- 1946)의 회화에 나타난 사회의식의 표출양상을 분석한 연구이다. 20세기 초 미국에는 두 개의 세계대전과 대공황이 일어났으며, 이러한 격변 속에서 커리는 국내의 정치적, 사회적 상황에 관심을 가지며 자신의 목소리를 내고자 하였다. 본 연구는 1920년대 후반부터 1946년까지 미술가로 활동했던 커리의 작품에 사회의식이 꾸준히 나타났다고 보았다. 따라서 특정 작품이나 시기적으로 국한되었던 기존의 연구를 확장하여, 그의 회화 전반에 사회에 대한 어떠한 메시지가 표출되었는지를 분석해보고자 했다. 동시대의 삶을 바탕으로 관찰과 경험을 작품 속에 표현하고자 한 20세기 초 미국의 작가들처럼 커리는 일종의 리얼리스트적 태도를 보였다. 그는 명확하고 사실적인 양식을 취하는 표현 방법을 통해 사회를 바라보는 시각과 역사의식을 담은 작품을 제작하며 자신의 메시지를 드러내고자 했다. 커리는 개인사적인 이유 혹은 기관이나 단체의 요청으로 인해 미국의 여러 지역에 체류했으며, 각 지역의 상황과 사회의 모습에 주목하는 태도를 보였다. 이로 인해 그의 회화에는 체류 지역과 시기에 따라 사회에 대한 의식이 다양한 주제로 표출되는 양상이 나타났다. 캔자스 체류 시기의 회화에는 고향인 농촌 지역의 상황과 부모를 비롯한 농업에 종사하는 사람들에 대한 커리의 관심이 나타났다. 그는 거대한 건축물과 가축을 통해 풍요로운 농촌을 표현하면서도, 이를 일궈낸 농업인의 위용을 드러내고자 했다. 또한, 캔자스 공공건물의 벽화에 역사적 인물을 등장시키고 지역의 풍경을 목가적으로 표현함으로써, 지역의 번영과 위상을 드러내고자 한 시도를 보였다. 그리고 코네티컷 시기에는 문화예술 분야에 관계된 사람들과 교류했던 커리의 상황이 나타났다. 미술가뿐만 아니라 극작가와 배우 등 오락 문화에 종사하는 사람들과 교류했던 그는 내부자의 시선으로 무대 뒤편의 모습을 포착했으며, 이를 통해 대중들이 즐겼던 무대의 어두운 이면을 지적하는 태도를 보였다. 나아가 그는 언론을 통해 접했던 인종 문제와 린치에 대해 피해자들의 나약한 상황에 주목하며 비판적인 목소리를 표출하였다. 더불어 그는 예술가들을 비롯한 인권 단체와 함께 대중들에게 인종 문제의 심각성을 알리고자 한 행보를 보이기도 했다. 1930년대 경제적 위기를 극복하기 위해 여러 정책이 추진되었던 상황 속에서 커리는 워싱턴 D.C.에 위치한 국가 기관의 벽화를 제작하게 되었다. 그는 벽화에 역사적 상황이나 기관의 행동을 비유적으로 표현함으로써 진취적인 행보와 국가에 대한 믿음을 고취하고자 했다. 마지막으로, 대학에 소속된 미술가로서 위스콘신에 머물렀던 커리는 작품에 지역의 상징물을 등장시키거나 지역 발전을 위해 연구하는 대학의 활동을 표현하며, 거주 지역의 활성화를 향한 적극적인 태도를 드러내었다. 이와 함께 그는 세계 2차 대전으로 인해 변화된 일상의 장면들을 재현하며 전쟁의 비극을 지적하기도 했다. 이와 같은 분석을 통해 본 연구는 커리가 살아가고 있던 20세기 초 미국 사회에 꾸준히 관심을 가지며, 지역과 시기에 따라 사회에 대한 의식을 다각적인 주제로 표출해왔음을 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 그의 회화 전반을 체류 지역에 따른 시기별로 나누어 분석해봄으로써, 커리의 회화를 확장하여 살펴볼 수 있었던 점에서 미술사적인 의의를 찾을 수 있을 것이다.
