미국 주요 미술관의 한국실 개관전에 대한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 미국 내 주요 미술관의 한국실 개관전에 관한 연구로 시기별로 변화하는 한국 미술의 특성에 대한 이해도를 분석한다. 본 논문의 연구대상으로는 미국의 브루클린미술관, 메트로폴리탄미술관, 샌프란시스코 아시아미술관, 보스턴미술관 네 곳을 선정하였다. 이 네 미술관은 우수한 한국 미술품을 소장하고 있는 기관으로 주목받기도 하지만 이들의 개관전시가 1987년부터 2012년까지 시기적 성격을 총체적으로 대표할 수 있다고 보기 때문이다. 본문의 II장에서는 위 4개 미술관의 한국 미술품 수집의 역사와 한국실 운영의 배경을 알아본다. 19세기부터 시작된 미국 개인 수집가의 아시아 미술품 수집은 이국적 문화에 대한 취향을 반영한다. 개인 수집에서 시작된 미국 미술관의 한국 미술품의 성격은 연구목적, 수집가의 취향, 민속학적 자료의 추구에 따라 차이를 보였다. 위 미술관 네 곳의 초창기 한국 미술 소장품 대다수가 도자기였다는 점과, 한국 미술품이 일본 미술품 또는 중국 미술품과 비교하여 소장 수량이 현저히 적었다는 점은 한국 미술품의 특수성에 대한 인식이 미진하였다는 점을 시사한다. 하지만 이 시기에는 소장품을 형성하기 시작하여 한국 미술 전시실의 토대를 구축하였다는 점에서 중요하다. 한편 한국 미술전시실의 내실화는 1989년 미국 내 미술관의 최초 한국 미술 담당자로 샌프란시스코 아시아미술관의 백금자 큐레이터가 임명되어 전문적인 운영이 시작되며 본격적으로 이루어졌다. 또한, 1990년대부터는 한국국제교류재단, 2000년대부터는 국립문화재연구소, 국립민속박물관, 국립중앙박물관 등이 지원하는 세분화된 한국전시실 지원사업을 통해 더욱 활성화되었다. III장에서는 1987년부터 2012년까지 미국 내 주요 미술관 네 곳의 한국실 개관전을 분석 대상으로 삼아 전시 목표, 전시품의 선정, 관련 행사와 현지 반응으로 나누어 그 변천사를 살펴본다. 1987년 브루클린미술관의 <고요한 아침의 나라> 전시는 중국 미술과 일본 미술과 차별성을 지닌 한국미술의 특징으로 민속 미술을 선보였다. 민속품과 병치된 전통 미술품의 배치는 낯선 이국 문화의 생활상을 소개하며 한국미술의 타자성을 강조하였으나, 유물 설명시 있어 정확도가 떨어져 한국 미술에 대한 이해도가 미비하였음을 시사한다. 1998년 메트로폴리탄미술관의 <한국미술전>은 한국미술의 특수성과 동아시아 미술 안에서 한국 미술의 보편성을 공표한 전시로 변화된 시각을 나타냈다. 전시는 중국과 일본 미술을 잇는 한국 미술의 역할을 강조함과 동시에 회화, 도자기, 공예, 조각 등을 균형 있게 소개하며 한국미술의 독자적인 미로 소박함과 서정성을 내세웠다. 이로 인해 한국 미술 전시가 나아갈 방향에 대한 토의가 진전되었으며 국제 사회 속 한국미술 전시가 도약하게 된 계기가 되었다. 2003년 샌프란시스코 아시아미술관의 <고려> 전시는 기존의 통사전시가 아닌 특정 시대를 조명한 주제 전시로 변화하였으며, 미국 사회 내 한국미술에 대한 수용도가 넓어짐을 시사하였다. 특히 전시에는 미국에 처음 공개되는 공예품과 불화 등의 다양한 전시품을 통해 고려시대 미술의 화려함을 알리게 되었다. 마지막으로 2012년 보스턴미술관의 <조선 불화> 전시는 유교가 지배적 사상이었던 조선시대의 불교 회화를 재평가한 전시로 다각적인 접근방식을 보여주었다. 특히 회화만으로 구성된 이 전시는 보스턴미술관의 소장사와 한국 현대미술의 연속성을 다루며 한국 미술에 대한 인식의 확장을 이루었다. 이처럼 본 논문은 지금까지 연구되지 않았던 미국의 주요 미술관 네 곳의 한국실 개관전의 변화를 비교하였다. 한국 미술에 대한 미국의 주요 미술관의 초창기 견해는 차이에 대한 인식으로 시작되었으며 한국 미술의 고유성을 강조하였다. 그러나 점차 한국 미술의 특수성은 보편성과 함께 고려되었고, 다양한 해석이 이루어졌으며 미국 내 한국 미술에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓히는데 기여하였다. 앞으로 해외의 한국 미술 전시에 관한 연구가 활성화되기를 바란다.;The purpose of this study is to analyze the inaugural exhibitions of Korean Galleries in major museums in the United States. In order to research, four major museums have been chosen as the subjects, which are the Brooklyn Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. These are the museums which are considered to have been pioneers in introducing Korean art in the United States by installing Korean galleries at a relatively early date. This study aims to find out how they perceived Korean art at the time through their special exhibitions and how they presented the image of Korea via their collections. Firstly, in Chapter II, this study will look at the historical background of the Korean collections of the American museums to lay the groundwork for comprehending the understandings on the characteristic of Korean art of the major American museums. Korean art collection grew with the formation of Chinese and Japanese art collections by the gifts and donations from the American scholars and private collectors. By figuring out what genres each museum focused on to collect Korean art, this study will analyze their perceptions on Korean art. In addition, this study will examine the various types of support from Korean public institutions to observe how the operations of Korean galleries have been specialized over time. Secondly, Chapter III examine the exhibition goal and the format of the inaugural exhibition of Korean Galleries in major American museums through 1987 to 2012, and deduce how the understanding of the characteristic of Korean art have changed. This study anlayze the history of the transformation by dividing the exhibition goals, list of the exhibits, the events and the local responses. The views and understanding of the four major American museums on Korean art evolved over time. The perception of Korean art began with a desire for a difference in the early days, and emphasized the characteristics of Korean art. However, the speciality of Korean art was considered along with its universality, and various interpretations were given. Therefore this study is important in that it confirmed the changes in understanding of Korean art through the inaugural exhibition of Korean Galleries in major American museums. Unfortunately, there is a lack of data on the special exhibition of Korean Galleries in the American museums. Although news releases, statistics on visitors and newsclippings are needed, few museums have been archiving them. An analysis of the Korean Galleries’ exhibitions in the museums in the United States will be conducted, and if such materials are accumulated, it will be a good reference for overseas Korean art exhibitions.
