애니메이션 <쿵푸 팬더(Kung Fu Panda, 2008)>의 음악분석을 통한 존 파웰(John Powell)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 작곡가 존 파웰(John Powell, 1963-)이 작곡한 애니메이션 <쿵푸 팬더(Kung Fu Panda, 2008)>의 음악적 특징에 관한 연구이다. <쿵푸 팬더(Kung Fu Panda, 2008)>는 중국을 배경으로 주인공 팬더가 쿵푸 마스터가 되기까지의 과정을 그리고 있다. 존 파웰은 세 편의 시리즈 중 1편과 2편의 음악을 담당하였고 본 논문에서는 그중 1편의 음악을 연구하였다. 존 파웰은 60편이 넘는 영화와 애니메이션 작품을 하며 경력을 쌓고 있는 현재 할리우드에서 활발히 활동하는 작곡가이다. 클래식부터 재즈, 락, 광고음악까지 다양한 음악 장르를 섭렵한 그는 드라마, 로맨스, 코미디, 스릴러, 액션, SF 등 영화의 장르도 자유자재로 넘나들며 음악 스타일을 확고히 하고 있다. 특히 애니메이션에서 각 나라의 전통악기를 사용한 특색있는 민속음악으로 골든 글로브 시상식, 애니상, ASCAP, IFMCA 어워드 등 각종 시상식에서 음악상을 받으며 실력을 인정받았다. 본 논문은 애니메이션 <쿵푸 팬더>의 음악분석을 통해 작곡가 존 파웰이 어떠한 음악적 요소와 기법을 사용하여 중국적인 배경을 묘사하였으며 영상에서 보이지 않는 감독의 연출 의도를 표현하는 음악의 역할이 무엇인지 연구하고자 한다. 이에 앞서 이국적 배경의 애니메이션을 조사하여 음악의 특징을 알아보았고, 중국의 전통 음계와 서양의 펜타토닉 스케일, 중국의 전통악기, 작곡가의 생애와 작품세계를 조사하였다. 애니메이션의 서사구조를 발단, 전개, 절정, 결말의 네 단계로 나누어 줄거리를 정리하였다. 장면에 삽입된 총 34곡의 OST의 인/아웃 지점을 파악하여 큐시트를 만들고 영상과 음악의 상관관계를 토대로 음악적 요소와 특징을 연구하였다. 그 결과 존 파웰은 동·서양의 음악 요소와 악기의 음색을 효과적으로 사용하여 영상에 독특한 색을 입히는 작곡가임을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 애니메이션에서 음악의 역할과 존 파웰의 음악적 스타일을 정리하고 앞으로 있을 존 파웰의 다른 작품들과 이국적 배경의 애니메이션에 관한 지속적인 연구에 조금이나마 보탬이 되기를 바란다. ;The study presents the musical characteristics of the animation film Kung Fu Panda(2008) which is composed by John Powell(1963-). Kung Fu Panda depicts the process of the protagonist panda becoming a kung fu master in China. John Powell was in charge of music for one and two of the three series, and in this paper, one of them was studied. John Powell is an active Hollywood composer who has worked on over 60 films and animations. He has worked in a variety of musical genres from classical music to jazz, rock, and commercials, and he has established his music style by freely crossing the genres of movies such as drama, romance, comedy, thriller, action, and science fiction. In particular, his talent was recognized by receiving music awards at various awards ceremonies such as Golden Globe Awards, Annie Awards, ASCAP and IFMCA Awards for its characteristic folk music using traditional instruments from each country in animation. This thesis is a study on the role of music that expresses the director's directing intention, which composer John Powell used some musical elements and techniques through musical analysis of the animation Kung Fu Panda. Previously, the researcher investigated the characteristics of music by examining animations with exotic backgrounds, and investigated traditional Chinese scales, western pentatonic scales, traditional Chinese instruments, and the life and work of composers. The narrative structure of the animation was divided into four parts: exposition, rising action, climax and conclusion. A cue sheet was created by identifying the in/out points where a total of 34 soundtracks were inserted, and the musical elements and characteristics were studied based on the correlation between video and music. As a result, it was found that John Powell was a composer who applied unique colors to images by effectively using the musical elements of the East and the West and the tones of instruments. Through this study, the researcher hope that this study will help to organize the role of music in animation and John Powell's musical style, and to help in continuing research on other works by John Powell and animations with exotic backgrounds in the future.
