애니메이션 <볼트(Bolt)>의 음악 분석을 통한 존 파웰(John Powell)의 음악적 특징에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 작곡가 존 파웰(John Powell, 1963-)이 작곡을 담당한 애니메이션 작품 <볼트(Bolt, 2008)>의 음악적 특징에 관한 연구이다. 존 파웰은 애니메이션과 영화 음악으로 잘 알려져 있으며 현재까지 할리우드에서 활발하게 활동하고 있는 작곡가이다. 그는 디즈니 애니메이션의 음악적 틀인 뮤지컬 형식으로부터 새로운 형식의 애니메이션 음악을 구축하였다. 그 특징으로는 기존에 존재하는 곡을 오마주하여 곡의 주요한 모티브나 멜로디를 차용해 사용함으로써 기존 곡의 이미지나 분위기를 통해 쉽게 이해할 수 있게 한다. 이러한 특징은 그의 대다수의 작품에서 찾아볼 수 있었으며, 그중 애니메이션 <볼트>를 통해 존 파웰의 음악적 특징이 어떻게 구현되었는지 알아보고자 한다. 본 연구자는 존 파웰의 음악적 특징을 분석하기에 앞서 그의 18편의 작품을 연구하여 살펴보았다. 그중 선행 연구가 없는 <볼트>를 선정하여 분석의 대상으로 삼았으며 작품 줄거리를 기준으로 발단, 전개, 위기, 절정, 결말로 나누어 음악 삽입 부분에 대한 의도를 파악한 뒤 작곡가의 음악적 성향과 특징의 이해를 위해 존 파웰의 생애와 작품 세계를 조사하였다. 이러한 연구를 토대로 분석한 결과, 애니메이션의 오프닝 음악을 볼트와 페니의 교감 테마로 사용하여 작품 전반의 스토리와 분위기를 연상하게 하였다. 또한 주인공(볼트)의 모티브를 설정하여 상황에 따라 두 가지의 모티브로 구분하여 사용하였다. 애니메이션의 스토리 진행상 과감한 생략이 필요한 경우에는 암전 기능이 사용되었고, 암전과 동시에 음악이 중단되며 장면의 전환을 강조시켰다. 다음으로 배경과 장소가 나타나는 음악을 사용하여 뉴욕이라는 배경을 재즈 장르로 표현하였으며 오마주 기법을 사용하여 다른 애니메이션 음악과 차별화를 두었다. 이는 기존에 존재하는 유명한 곡들을 오마주 또는 차용하여 기존 곡의 이미지를 통해 장면을 효과적으로 이해시키는 특징을 가진다. 또한, 애니메이션의 전형적인 기능인 동작(히트 포인트, 싱크 포인트, 미키마우싱)에 맞추어 사용된 음악이 존재하며 특별한 상황에 음악이 사용되어 특정 장면을 효과적으로 나타냈다. 본 논문은 애니메이션 <볼트>의 연구를 통해 존 파웰의 음악적 성향과 특징을 알아보았으며 본 논문의 연구를 통해 애니메이션 음악과 존 파웰에 관한 연구에 도움이 되기를 바라는 바이다.;This thesis is a study on the musical characteristics of <Bolt (2008)>, an animation work composed by composer John Powell (1963-). John Powell is known for his animation and film music, and is still an active composer in Hollywood. He constructed a new type of animation music from the musical format, the musical framework of Disney animation. As a feature, it is easy to understand through the image and atmosphere of the existing song by using it by homage to existing songs or by borrowing the main motif or melody of the song. These characteristics can be found in most of his works, and among them, I would like to examine how John Powell's musical characteristics were embodied through the animation <Bolt>. Prior to analyzing John Powell's musical characteristics, this researcher studied and examined a total of 18 works by John Powell. Among them,<Bolt>, which has no prior research, was selected as the subject of analysis. Based on the plot of the work, it was divided into beginning, development, crisis, climax, and ending, and after grasping the intention of the musical insertion part, For understanding, John Powell's life and world of art were investigated. As a result of analysis based on these studies, the opening music of animation was used as a sympathetic theme between Bolt and Penny, reminiscent of the story and atmosphere of the overall work. In addition, the motif of the main character (bolt) was set, and it was divided into two motifs depending on the situation and used. When the animation story progression required a bold omission, a dark change function was used, and the music was stopped at the same time as a dark change, and the transition of the scene was emphasized. Next, the background of New York was described as a jazz genre by using music showing the background and place, and homage was used as a musical feature that differentiated it from other animation music. The scene was effectively expressed through the image of the existing song by homage or borrowing of existing famous songs, and the music used in accordance with the motion, which show a typical function of animation, exists, and features all of the hit points, sink points, and Mickey Mouse. Also, music was used in special situations to effectively represent specific scenes. This study investigated the musical characteristics of animation <Bolt> through such music research, and hopes that this study will be helpful in research on animation music and John Powell.
