영화 <해리포터와 마법사의 돌(Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone), 2001>에 나타난 존 윌리엄스(John Williams)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 영화 <해리포터와 마법사의 돌(Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone), 2001>에 나타난 작곡가 존 윌리엄스(John Williams, 1932~)의 음악적 특징에 관한 연구이다. 한 시대를 풍미한 할리우드의 명작들은 대부분 존 윌리엄스의 손을 거쳤으며, 그는 현재까지 63년째 활동을 이어가며 현존하는 영화음악가 중 가장 영향력 있는 영화음악계의 거장으로 꼽힌다. 존 윌리엄스의 음악은 19세기 말의 후기 낭만주의 스타일의 계보를 이어, 웅장하고 거대한 오케스트라의 정석을 보여준다. 존 윌리엄스는 <해리포터와 마법사의 돌, 2001>과 <해리포터와 비밀의 방(Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets), 2002>, <해리포터와 아즈카반의 죄수(Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban), 2004>까지 총 3편의 해리포터 영화음악을 작곡하면서 영화 <해리포터>를 대표하는 상징으로 자리 잡았다. 영화 <해리포터와 마법사의 돌>은 작가 조앤 K. 롤링(Joan K. Rowling, 1965~)이 집필한 마법 판타지 소설 『해리포터와 마법사의 돌』을 바탕으로 제작된 영화로, 10년간의 대장정으로 막을 내린 <해리포터> 시리즈의 첫 번째 작품이다. 본 연구자는 존 윌리엄스가 어떠한 음악적 언어를 사용하여 원작 소설 속의 거대한 판타지 마법 세계와 장대한 스케일의 블록버스터 영화를 입체적으로 구현해냈는지에 대해서 음악 분석을 통해 연구하고자 한다. 음악적 특징을 분석하기에 앞서, 해리포터 작품의 배경과 해리포터 작품의 영화음악들을 선행 연구하였으며, 작곡가의 생애와 작품세계를 살펴보았다. 효과적인 음악 분석을 위해서 서사구조를 발단, 전개, 위기, 절정, 결말의 다섯 부분으로 나누고, 각 부분의 장면에 따라 삽입된 음악을 음악의 기능, 장면과 음악의 상관관계를 중심으로 하여 음악의 특징을 분석하였다. 이를 바탕으로 작품 전체에 나타난 존 윌리엄스의 음악적 특징을 도출해내고자 하였다. 연구 결과, 존 윌리엄스는 할리우드 전통 심포니 사운드를 통하여 원작 소설 속 판타지 마법 세계를 바로 눈앞에서 펼쳐지는 것처럼 환상적이고 입체적으로 그려내었다. 존 윌리엄스는 스토리 전개에 따라서 주인공 해리포터를 중심으로 하여, 스토리의 중요한 큐마다 라이트모티프(leitmotif)를 설정함으로써 영화 속 이야기를 유기적으로 연결하여 극을 이끌어 나갔다. 특히, 주인공 해리포터가 마법에 관련되었을 때마다 “헤드윅 테마(Hedwig’s Theme)”가 변주와 발전을 통해 영화 전반에 걸쳐 반복적으로 사용됨을 알 수 있었다. 음악의 인&아웃은 장면에 따라서 음악이 변화하며, 음악을 통해 상황을 구체화 시키고 서술해주는 역할을 하였다. 위와 같이, 무성영화 시대의 음악을 연상케하는 월투월(Wall-To-Wall) 형식과 장면과 음악을 맞추는 형식인 히트포인트(Hit Point)와 미키 마우징(Mickey Mousing) 기법이 사용되었다. 또한, 마법이 행해지는 장면을 묘사하기 위해, 이펙트(Effect)적으로 접근하여 존 윌리엄스만의 뚜렷한 색채가 드러나는 음향효과적인 음악을 통해 마법의 음색을 창조해내었다. 본 논문을 통해 존 윌리엄스에 관한 연구뿐만 아니라, 해리포터 시리즈의 분석 연구가 활발하게 이루어지기를 바라며, 체계적이고 지속적인 연구에 보탬이 되기를 바란다.;The purpose of this study is to analyze musical characteristics of the composer John Williams(1932~) in the movie Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone (2001). Most of Hollywood's masterpieces, widely loved all over the world, were taken care of by John Williams. Having been active for 63 years, he is considered one of the most influential film musicians in the film score circles. As John Williams' music has inherited the post-Romanticism at the end of the 19th century, his music shows off the essence of a magnificent and grand orchestra. John Williams composed three pieces of film music for Harry Potter series, from Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone (2001), Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets (2002), to Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban (2004), making him a symbol for the Harry Potter film series. The magical fantasy novel Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone, written by author Joan K. Rowling was adapted for the movie Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone, which is the first sequel of Harry Potter series that had produced for as long as a decade. This study was conducted through musical analysis on what musical language John Williams used to embody the enormous fantasy magical world in the original novel and how he contributed to the magnificent-scaled blockbuster in three dimensions. Prior to analyzing the musical characteristics, the background of Harry Potter series and its film music were researched in advance, and also the life of John Williams and the world of the composer's works were examined. For effective music analysis, the narrative structure was divided into five parts: beginning, development, crisis, climax, and ending, and then each characteristic of the music was analyzed, focusing on the function of the inserted music in the each scene and the correlation between the scene and music. Based on this findings, I have figured out the musical characteristics of John Williams throughout his whole works. The findings of this study is that John Williams used the traditional Hollywood symphony sound to portray the fantasy magical world fantastically and vividly in the original novel as if it unfolded right before your eyes. John Williams focused on the main character Harry Potter as the story was developing, and set leitmotifs every important cue of the story, so that he could lead plot by intimately connecting the story. In particular, it was found that whenever the main character Harry Potter was involved in magic, ‘Hedwig's Theme’ was repeatedly used through variations and development across the film. In&Out in music changed according to the scene, and played a role in specifying and describing the situation through music. In this way, Wall-To-Wall format and Hit Point and Mickey Mousing technique, a format that matches the scene and music, were used, which was reminiscent of the music in the silent picture days. In addition, in order to portray the scenes in which magic was being practiced, John Williams created a magical tone through sound effects, which presents his own distinct color. I expect that not only the study on John Williams, but also the analysis of Harry Potter series to be actively conducted, and that this study will contribute to systematic and continuous researches.
