Landon Ronald의 연가곡 『A Cycle of Life』 분석 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 연구자의 석사학위 졸업 연주 프로그램 중 랜던 로날드(Landon Ronald,1873-1938)의 연가곡『삶의 순환(A Cycle of Life)』에 대해 연구하고자 한다. 로날드(Landon Ronald, 1873-1938)는 20세기 초 영국의 음악가로 지휘자이자 피아니스트, 작곡가이다. 그의 연가곡 중『삶의 순환(A Cycle of Life)』은 1906년에 초판 된 작품으로 인생에서 나타나는 삶과 사랑 등의 주제를 가지고 사계절에 비유한 심슨(Harold Simpson, 1872-1949)의 시를 기초로 한 곡이다. 이 작품은 제 1곡의 ‘프렐류드(Prelude)’를 시작으로 하여 제 2곡 ‘숲 속에서(Down in the Forest)’, 제 3곡 ‘사랑, 난 당신을 얻었네(Love, I have won you)’, 제 4곡 ‘바람이 불어오네(The winds are calling)’, 그리고 제 5곡 ‘내려오네, 내려오네(Drift down, drift down)’의 총 다섯 곡으로 구성되었으며 제 2곡부터는 봄, 여름, 가을, 겨울 의 부제를 지닌다. 로날드(Landon Ronald, 1873-1938)의 성악작품과 음악적 특징을 살펴본 후, 그의 연가곡 『삶의 순환(A Cycle of Life)』을 분석하고자 한다. 특히, 사계절을 비유한 시의 내용이 선율과 화성, 리듬 등을 통해 음악에 어떻게 적용되었는지 연구하고 아울러 성악가의 노래와 피아노 반주의 관계를 통해 로날드 가곡의 특징과 효과적인 연주법 접근에 대해서 고찰해보고자 한다. ;This study is about Landon Ronald (1873-1938)’s song 『A Cycle of Life』, one of the researcher’s graduate performances. Landon Ronald (1873-1938) is a conductor, pianist, and composer in the early 20 century in the United Kingdom. One of his song cycles 『A Cycle of Life』 is first published in 1906 which is based on Harold Simpson’s(1872-1949) poem compares life and love shown in life to four seasons. This song consists of 5 chapters which starts with ‘Prelude’ as first, ‘Down in the Forest’ as second, ‘Love, I have won you’ as third, ‘The winds are calling’ as forth, and ‘Drift down, drift down’ as the fifth. And it contains spring, summer, fall, and winter as subtitles from the second chapter. I’m trying to investigate 『A Cycle of Life』 based on Landon Ronald(1873-1938)’s vocal songs and musical characteristics. Particularly, we will focus on how the poem is applied to music through melody, harmony, and rhythm. And we will also investigate Landon Ronald’s songs’ characteristics and effective play method through the relationship with vocal songs and piano accompaniment.
