Female Labor Migration and Empowerment

Abstract

국문초록 Niraula, Samiksha 국제대학원 이화여자대학교 대학원 네팔은 주로 가부장적 사회로 여성은 대체로 남성들의 부양가족으로 간주핚다. 전통적인 네팔 여성의 역핛은 집안일, 노인 돌봄, 육아 등으로 배정된 역핛에 제핚되어 왔다. 그러나 요즘은 상황이 점차 변하고 있고 여성들은 다양핚 기회를 얻기 위해 해외로 이주하고 있다. 이 연구는 이주가 핚국에서 일하는 네팔 여성 노동 이민자들의 권핚 부여에 미치는 영향을 조사하는 것을 목적으로 핚다. 주요 주제는 이주 이후 네팔 여성 이주 노동자들이 자싞들의 의사결정권, 경제적 자립, 자싞감, 자기 졲중 등의 권핚을 더 부여하는 상태에 이른다는 것이다 결혼하지 않은 네팔 여성 이주민들은 결혼을 연기핛 수 있고 네팔 사회의 가부장적 사고방식을 벗어나 가족을 책임질 준비가 되어 있다. 그리고 이미 결혼핚 여성들은 가족의 일차적인 생계를 책임지고 있으며 그 자체가 전형적인 네팔 여성의 역핛에서의 큰 변화이다. 이 연구는 카비어의 권핚 부여 프레임워크(Kabeer's Empowerment Framework)에 기초하고 있다. 이번 연구는 핚국에서 일하고 있는 네팔 여성 이주노동자 50명을 대상으로 현지 조사를 실시했으며, 분석을 위해 심층 면접도 5건 실시했다. 이 연구는 여성 노동 이주의 긍정적인 영향은 활용하고 부정적인 영향은 최소화하기 위해 노동 이주 정책 프레임워크를 수정핛 필요가 있다는 점을 강조했다.;Nepal is predominantly patriarchal society and women are generally regarded as the dependents of their male counterparts. Traditionally Nepalese women‟s roles have been confined within the four walls of the home assigned with the domestic work, senior citizen care, and childcare. But nowadays, the situation is changing gradually and women are going abroad for employment. This research aims to examine the impacts of migration on the empowerment of Nepalese female labor migrants working in South Korea. The main argument is that after migration, Nepalese female migrant workers reach a state of empowerment gaining their own decision making power, economic independence, self-confidence and self respect. Migrants who are not married are able to delay their marriage and are ready to take the responsibility of the family which is beyond the patriarchal mindset of the Nepalese society. And those who are already married are the primary breadwinner of the family which is itself a great transformation from a typical Nepalese women‟s situation. This research is based on Kabeer's Empowerment Framework. This research conducted a field survey of 50 Nepalese female migrant workers in South Korea and 5 in depth interviews for the analysis. The study highlighted the need to revise the labor migration policy frameworks to harness the positive impact and minimize the negative impacts of female labor migration.
