Abstract
The mass of neutrinos and the nature of them whether they are Majorana or Dirac particles remain unknown. The experiments for searching neutrino-less double beta (0νββ) decay can be a critical channel to discover the nature of neutrinos. Although studies on 0νββ decay can yield important findings, it will be difficult to detect 0νββ decay. However, two-neutrino double beta (2νββ) decay has been observed and can provide some useful information about 0νββ decay. This thesis discusses the detection of gammas emitted from the excited state of 100Ru produced by 2νββ decay of 100Mo and presents the measurements of the partial half-lives from the data. According to the Fermi’s beta decay theory, neutrino’s mass is related to the transition amplitude of nuclear weak decay. This amplitude is called the nuclear matrix element (NME). The deduced NME values can be different depending on the nuclear model, such as the nuclear shell model or quasi-particle random phase approximation. Considering that the mass of neutrino is expected to be extremely small (< 1.1 eV at 90% confidence level (C.L.)), it is important to determine the exact NME. Notably, because 0νββ decay has not been observed by now, the corresponding NME of 0νββ decay can only be assumed. However, if we understand NME of 2νββ decay and the nuclear structure properties, NME of 0νββ decay can be estimated, which motivates the present study. Molybdenum-100 is one of candidates for 0νββ decay experiment due to its properties, such as relative high Q-value 3034 keV. The Advanced Molybdenum-based Rare process Experiment (AMoRE) in the Center for Underground Physics searches for 0νββ decay from 100Mo. After 100Mo decays to the excited states of 100Ru, gamma rays with specific energies are emitted from the deexcitation of 100Ru to the ground state. The half-life of the transition of 100Mo to the excited states of 100Ru can be measured by detecting the gamma, and the half-life result can be used further in the NME study. The high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors are generally used for the gamma-ray spectroscopy. A single HPGe detector, named CC1, and an array of fourteen HPGe detectors, referred to CAGe, are installed in the YangYang underground Laboratory for experiments of rare decay physics. To acquire precise experimental data, the detection efficiencies have been calibrated by establishing dead layers for each detector of CAGe in GEANT4 simulation. We measured the half-lives for 2νββ decay of 100Mo to the first and the second excited states of 100Ru by measuring four samples of 100Mo-enriched powders using CC1 and CAGe. The 100MoO3 powders are one of the raw constituent materials of the AMoRE crystals. The latest data by NEMO-3 group for transitions of 100Mo to the first and the second excited states of 100Ru are > 25 x 10^20 years at 90% C.L. and {7.5 +/- 0.6 (stat) +/- 0.6 (syst)} x 10^20 years, respectively. The most precise half-life measurement results among our four experiments are > 71 x 10^20 years at 90% C.L. and {7.9 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.9 (syst)} x 10^20 years, respectively. We measured 2.9 times longer lower limit compared to NEMO-3 group’s result on the half-life of the transition to the first excited state. For the transition to second excited state, the observed half-life values are consistent with each other within total uncertainty.;중성미자의 질량, 그리고 중성미자가 마요라나 혹은 디랙 입자 인지에 대한 여부는 아직 밝혀지지 않았다.
