과정개념을 중심으로 본 디터 로트(Dieter Roth)의 조형적 태도

Abstract

본 논문은 과정개념을 중심으로 본 디터 로트(Dieter Roth, 1930-1998)의 조형적 태도에 관한 연구이다. 로트는 다양한 매체와 형식으로 작품을 전개하였는데, 그의 작업 세계를 하나로 범주화할 수 있는 특성은 과정개념이다. 로트의 작품에서 과정은 완결되어 영구불변한 것을 다루기보다는 변함을 본질로 하는 속성을 바탕으로, 시간이 지속됨에 따라 나타나는 우연성, 불확실성, 비결정성을 드러낸다. 이와 같은 표현은 변화의 가능성을 보여줌으로써 전통적 미학 체계에 도전하고, 현실로부터 유리되지 않은 예술을 실천하려는 시도에서 기인한다. 따라서 본 연구는 로트가 서로 다른 작업 방식을 보여주었음에도 불구하고 일관성 있게 다루었던 과정개념에 주목하고, 이것이 그의 작품 전반에서 어떠한 방식으로 표출되었는지를 총체적으로 고찰하였다. 로트가 작업을 전개하기 시작한 1950년대 말에서 1960년대 초 미술계에서는 추상표현주의가 현실과는 거리를 둔 채 인간 내면의 본질만을 탐구하려던 것에서 벗어나, 자신들이 속한 현실에 대한 시대적 증언을 하는 새로운 리얼리즘의 경향이 대두되었다. 이들은 사회적 맥락을 예술의 영역에 직접 도입하고자 한 것인데 로트의 작업은 그러한 움직임을 공유하면서도, 더 나아가 현실에 존재하는 모든 삶의 모습까지도 구현하였다. 이러한 특성은 동시대 예술가들이 보여준 사회적 현실이라는 주류적 흐름이 아니라 자신이 살아오면서 마주한 현실에서의 변화와 현상을 강조하는 로트만의 독창적인 조형 언어로 구체화되었다. 현실을 바라보는 시각에서 나타난 이와 같은 차이는 로트가 과정개념을 통해 현실의 이면까지도 예술에 반영하는 예술가로서의 역할을 강조한 데에서 비롯되었다. 로트는 과정을 주요한 조형 양식으로 삼음으로써 작품에 현실의 양상을 담아내었다. 그는 작품에서 초콜릿과 치즈 등 음식의 부패와 변질을 이용해 물질이 우연적으로 변화하는 과정을 직접적으로 노출시키거나 유도함으로써, 현실 속 가변적 사건을 예술의 영역에서 이야기하였다. 또한 로트는 완결된 작품의 형태를 부정하고 반복적으로 재구성하여 작업 과정의 가시성을 강조하는 한편, 일상 오브제를 수집하거나 이것을 축적하여 자신의 주변 환경을 바탕으로 한 변화의 궤적을 작품에서 다루어냈다. 나아가 로트는 매일 반복되는 일상에 시선을 맞추어 과거에서 현재로 이어지는 생의 과정을 일기, 사진, 영상 등의 다양한 매체를 통해 제시하여 현실의 흐름을 반영한 예술을 구현하였다. 이처럼 현실성을 추구한 동시대적인 시각이 전제되었으나, 과정개념을 통해 자신이 직면한 현실의 모습을 가감 없이 드러낸 것은 로트의 작업에서 살펴볼 수 있는 특유의 방식이었다. 본 연구는 로트의 예술관을 밝히고자 한 시도로서, 그의 작품을 아우르는 키워드를 과정으로 설정하여 다각적으로 분석하였다. 로트는 대다수의 예술에서 재현되지 않았던 과정이라는 변화하는 가치의 개념을 바탕으로, 현실에 대한 철학적인 메시지를 전달하였다. 이처럼 그는 언제나 결과 중심의 체제만을 추구하는 인습적 구조에 도전하고 과정을 통해 이를 전복하려는 의지를 보여준 예술가였다. 이러한 로트의 조형적 태도는 오늘날 우리에게 과정에 대해 숙고하는 기회를 마련했다는 점에서 의미 있게 평가할 수 있을 것이다.;This paper is a study on the formative style of Dieter Roth (1930-1998) in view of the process concept. Roth embodied his works in a variety of media and formats and the characteristic that can categorize his work world into one is the process concept. Instead of studying Roth's finished works that remain unchanged, this paper handles the process of how change is based as the essential quality as it reveals the contingency, uncertainty, and indeterminacy that appear over time. These expressions are attributed to attempts to challenge the traditional aesthetic structure by showing the potential for change, and to practice art that is not far from reality. Therefore, this study focused on the concept of process that Roth handled consistently despite showing different ways of working and considered how it was expressed throughout his work. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, when Roth began to develop work, a new trend of realism emerged in the world of art. The new realism contrasted with the abstract expressionism of the previous generation, which explored only the human consciousness. They wanted to introduce the social context directly into the realm of art, and Roth's work shared such movements and further embodied all aspects of life in reality. Technically, Roth was different from other artists of his generation that followed the mainstream characteristic of social reality. He expressed his unique formative characteristics in his work which showed the changes and phenomena he encountered in his life. The difference in Roth's view of reality originated from the emphasis on the role of Roth as an artist that reflects even the reverse side of reality through process concepts. Roth considered process as an important formative factor, bringing the aspect of reality into his work. He talked about the variable events in reality in the realm of art by directly exposing or inducing the process by which substances change accidentally using the corruption and alteration of food such as chocolate and cheese in his work. In addition, Roth denied and repeatedly reconstructed the form of the completed work to emphasize the visibility of the work process, while collecting objects or accumulating them to deal with the trajectory of change based on his surroundings in his work. Furthermore, Roth presented the process of life from the past to the present through various media such as diaries, photos, and videos, emphasizing the daily routine, so the art would be reflecting the flow of reality. This was his unique method of showing a contemporary view of pursuing reality that was premised, revealing the face of the reality that he faced through the process concept. This study attempts to uncover Roth's artistic view by showing the processes of his work and to analyze it from various angles. Roth conveyed a philosophical message about reality not seen in most arts through process – the concept of changing values. As such, he was an artist who always showed a willingness to challenge the conventional structure through process. Roth's formative style can be meaningfully evaluated in that it has given us an opportunity to ponder about process in today’s world.
