영화 <신비한 동물 사전(Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), 2016>에 나타난 제임스 뉴튼 하워드(James Newton Howard)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 작곡가 제임스 뉴튼 하워드(James Newton Howard)가 작곡을 담당한 영화 <신비한 동물 사전(Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), 2016>의 음악적 특징에 관한 연구이다. 제임스 뉴튼 하워드는 130편이 넘는 수많은 작품 경력을 이어오고 있는 현재 할리우드에서 활발히 활동하는 작곡가이다. 탄탄한 클래식적 기반을 바탕으로 팝, 록, 로맨스, 액션, 호러, 드라마, 판타지에 이르는 다양한 장르를 아우르는 음악적 존재감을 드러내고 있다. 한때, M. 나이트 샤말란 감독의 거의 모든 작품의 영화 음악을 담당하며 스릴러 작품에 두각을 나타냈던 때를 지나, 최근 그의 음악적 행보는 판타지 장르 작품들에 두각을 드러내고 있다. <신비한 동물 사전> 시리즈의 두 번째 영화 <신비한 동물들과 그린델왈드의 범죄(Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald), 2018>에 이어 현재 제작 중인 세 번째 영화 음악까지 담당하며 멈추지 않는 음악적 진보를 이루어내고 있다. 영화 <신비한 동물 사전>은 호그와트 마법학교 교과서의 가상 저자 뉴트 스캐맨더의 여정을 조명해낸 <해리 포터(Harry Potter)> 시리즈에서 파생된 작품으로, 작가 J.K. 롤링이 직접 시나리오에 참여한 그녀의 첫 시나리오 데뷔작이다. <해리 포터> 시리즈보다 70년 전 이야기를 다룬 작품으로, 원작의 세계관을 공유하는 작품의 특성을 어떠한 음악적 요소로 연관시키며, 1920년대 뉴욕의 배경과 작품의 중요 모티브가 되는 마법을 어떻게 그의 음악적 언어로써 묘사하고 있는지 알아보고자 한다. 본 연구자는 제임스 뉴튼 하워드의 음악적 특징을 분석하기에 앞서 할리우드의 판타지 장르의 영화 음악 변천사에 대해 살펴보았고, 작곡가의 생애와 작품 세계 연구를 통하여 그의 음악적 경향과 배경적 요소를 파악하였다. 영화의 서사구조를 발단, 전개, 위기, 절정, 결말의 다섯 단계로 나누어 줄거리를 정리하였다. 음악이 삽입된 In & Out 지점을 파악하여 영상과 음악과의 상관관계를 밝히고 그에 따른 음악적 기법과 특징을 연구한 결과, 제임스 뉴튼 하워드는 고전 스타일과 현대적 어법의 조화를 이루는 혜안과 시대적 감각을 지닌 작곡가임을 알 수 있었다. 원작의 오프닝과 같은 방식으로 <해리 포터> 시리즈의 주제 테마인 헤드윅 테마(Hedwig’s Theme)를 영화의 오프닝 장면에 서주 형태로 제시하여, 원작과의 스토리적 연결성을 서술하였다. 영화의 시대 배경이 느껴지도록 무성 영화 음악 시대에 유행한 wall-to-wall 방식의 음악을 영화 전반에 걸쳐 사용하면서, 동시에 드론, 혼합박자, 불협화음, 특수주법 등을 통하여 현대음악적인 접근을 시도하였다. 영화의 스토리텔링 기능을 강화하기 위해 라이트모티프를 설정하였는데 이러한 인물과 상황 테마의 사용은 연속적인 이야기로서의 배경과 분위기에 초점을 맞추어 전개되며, 선율 중심이 아닌 반복적인 음형(figure)을 모티브로 사용하는 현 시대적인 감각적 어법을 구현하고 있다. 또한, 바로크 시대 악기들과 재즈 트럼펫, 민속 악기 같은 다양한 악기들을 사용하여 특정한 시대와 상황, 캐릭터를 묘사하는 다채로운 판타지 영화 음악을 만들어내고 있다. 본 논문이 제임스 뉴튼 하워드에 관한 연구가 활발히 이루어지는 발판이 되길 바라며, 그 밖에 많은 영화 음악가들에 대한 체계적이고 지속적인 연구에 보탬이 되기를 바라는 바이다.;This study presents the musical characteristics of the film <Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)>, for which James Newton Howard composed the score. James Newton Howard is a prolific composer based in Hollywood, having written scores for over 130 films. With his educational background in classical music, he boasts his presence in the music industry by writing pop and rock music, and writing scores for various films ranging from romance, action and drama films to horror and fantasy films. He showed prominence in the thriller film genre, writing scores for almost all films by M. Night Shyamalan. He has now expanded his repertoire and is showing prominence in the fantasy film genre as well. He continues to march forward in his career, having written scores for <Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)>, as well as for the third installment in the series which is currently under production. <Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them> is inspired by the eponymous book in the <Harry Potter> series, presenting the journey of a fictional character, Newt Scamander. It was written by the author of the <Harry Potter> series, J. K. Rowling, in her screenwriting debut. The film’s plot takes place 70 years prior to the <Harry Potter> series. This study aims to analyze how the score achieves the sense of connection to another body of works that shares the same universe through musical characteristics, and how it is describing New York in the 1920s and magic as the film’s most important motif in its musical language. In doing so, the researcher examined the history of film music for Hollywood’s fantasy films prior to analyzing musical characteristics of James Newton Howard’s music. The researcher also studied the life and works of the composer to assess his musical background and tendencies. The plot of the film was analyzed in five parts according to the plot structure—exposition, rising action, crisis, climax and conclusion. According to the analysis of the correlation between the visual and music accomplished by assessing the in and out points of music, and musical techniques and characteristics used for each example, James Newton Howard proves to be a composer equipped with knowledge in both classics and modern music, balancing them with a great sense of modern-day trend. He took the Hedwig Theme from the Harry Potter series and rendered it as an introduction for the opening scene of the film. This achieves a narrative continuity of the Harry Potter series. Moreover, he utilized the wall-to-wall music technique, which was popular during the era of silent films, throughout the entire film to add a feeling of 1920s. While doing so, he added drone sound, mixed meters, dissonance, extended technique, etc. to the music to try a more modern approach. He also utilized leitmotif to reinforce the storytelling effect of the film. This kind of usage of distinct theme music for characters or situations were focused on having a narrative and atmospheric continuity. One of the most important characteristics of such theme music of Howard is its refined and modern-day grammar, utilizing repetitive motif as its core element instead of melodies. Furthermore, Howard used various instruments such as Baroque instruments, jazz trumpet and folk instruments to portray certain era, situation or characters in a very colorful way for a fantasy film. It is the researcher’s hope that this study will be a steppingstone for more studies on James Newton Howard and be a support for other systematic and continuous efforts for studies on film music composers.
