Abstract
The purpose of the study is to examine what is experienced in the art therapy process for Young North Korean defector’s resilience and what the experience means to. For this purpose, this study aims to explore what the participant experienced by applying qualitative case study methods. The research participant is 15-years-old female youth who detected from North Korea, and who currently attends an alternative school located in Seoul. The case proceeded twice a week, 90 minutes per session, and for a total of 16 sessions from February 13, 2020 to May 16, 2020. The goal of art therapy for Young North Korean defector’s resilience is positively cope with stress associated with adversity, gaining sel-control by relieving negative emotions, experiencing positive social support, promoting future hope through positive capacity enhancement. Data collection was done through audio files of in-depth interviews of the participant and her teacher, recorded files of art therapy sessions, photographs of the art works, the researcher’s observation journal. All data were collected with the consent of the reserch participant and were analyzed by constant comparison method to examine the experience and meaning of art therapy of young North Korean defector. In detail, the method involved a summary of significant linguistic and art expressions from the participant based on multiple careful reading of the transcriptions, and analyzed the data through the process of open coding, axial coading, selective coding.
