Abstract
The objective of the present study is to examine the effects of the aural and textual input enhancements through movie clips on the learning of parallel structure rules, mostly focusing on the use of coordinating conjunctions. The study was conducted over five sessions, with a total of 53 grade 11 students participating in the experiment. Three intact groups were formed, with two experimental groups and one control group, in which the experimental groups consisted of aural input enhancement (AIE) group, and textual input enhancement (TIE) group. All three groups first watched the 2019 musical film “Aladdin” for 30 minutes with Korean subtitles each session, then re-watched the scenes that contain the target grammar for another 10 minutes with English captions. The first session and last sessions were utilized for conducting the pre- and post-test. With the primary objective of teaching parallelism rule by employing different input enhancements, the AIE group was provided with aural enhancement applied in the audio of the movie scenes. The dialogues were slowed down and emphasized with increased volume, and included 1 second pause before and after the target grammar. Conversely, the TIE group received input enhancements on the captions, with the syntactic parallel structure underlined and color-coded in blue, and the coordinating conjunctions capitalized and color-coded in yellow. The control group watched the scenes with captions as well, but without any input enhancements. The study also employed timed Grammaticality Judgment Test (GJT) and delayed GJT in the pre- and post-test to specifically judge the participants’ implicit and explicit knowledge of the target grammar rule. The timed GJT scores were first analyzed to scrutinize the degree to which the participants gained implicit knowledge of the parallelism rule. The t-test results indicated that the TIE group’s test scores increased significantly after the treatment, while the AIE group and the control group did not. After conducting one-way ANOVA, the results revealed significant difference in the scores of the TIE group and those of the other two groups, demonstrating positive impact of the textual enhancement. Such findings implied that the textual enhancement used in caption was a beneficial factor in attaining implicit knowledge of the parallelism rule. The aural input enhancement, on the other hand, was not very effective. The analysis of the delayed GJT scores of the three groups was used to examine the explicit knowledge gains of the target grammar. According to the t-test results, the AIE and control group showed a significant decrease over time, while the TIE group manifested barely any change in the scores. Due to the large decline in the scores of two former groups, the one-way ANOVA on the post-test yielded difference among the three groups. Hence, the results implied that the treatments were ineffective in promoting explicit knowledge gains of the target grammar, in which the aural enhancement and no input enhancement rather brought negative effects. In addition, the participants were assorted into two proficiency level groups to evaluate the effect of the different input enhancement in relation with the proficiency level. For the higher-level participants, no significant difference between the AIE group and control group was identified in both timed and delayed GJT results. On the contrary, the lower-level participants that received textual enhancements improved significantly in their timed GJT scores, compared to those of the AIE group and control group. The findings of this study provide some pedagogical insights into how different types of input enhancements can be utilized for grammar learning. First, exposure to movie scenes with textual enhancement applied in captions promotes noticing of the parallel structure rules and can aid the development of implicit knowledge. However, the use of aural input enhancements alone in the audio of movie clips may not be an adequate way to achieve understanding of the grammar patterns like parallelism rules. The findings also suggest that additional factors such as explicit instructions or output tasks may be necessary in utilizing aural enhancement to achieve grammar learning among the L2 learners. Lastly, the results of the TIE group being positive for the development of implicit knowledge but not for that of the explicit knowledge indicates that textual enhancement may also benefit from further explicit instructions to induce more effective understanding of the parallelism rule.;다양한 멀티미디어 자료를 통한 영어 문법 지도가 최근에 증가하고 있으며 그 효과가 연구되어 오고 있다(Wang, 2017).
