유아의 행동억제가 불안에 미치는 영향

Abstract

본 연구는 유아의 행동억제가 불안에 미치는 직접적 영향과, 어머니의 과보호적 양육행동과 자율성 지지 각각을 통한 간접적 영향을 살펴보았다. 이를 위하여 만 3~5세 유아와 어머니 295쌍을 연구대상으로 선정하여 질문지법을 통해 자료를 수집하였고, 어머니가 모든 문항에 응답하였다. 유아의 행동억제를 측정하기 위해 Bishop, Spence와 McDonald(2003)가 개발한 행동억제 척도(Behavioral Inhibition Questionnaire [BIQ])를 본 연구자가 직접 번역하여 사용하였다. 어머니의 과보호적 양육행동을 측정하기 위해 Doh와 Falbo(1999)가 제작한 부모의 보호(Parental Protectiveness) 척도를 사용하였고, 자율성 지지는 Grolnick, Ryan과 Deci(1991)가 제작한 부모 지각 척도(Perceptions of Parents Scale [POPS]) 중 자율성 지지 관련 문항들과, Williams와 Deci(1996)의 학습 분위기 척도(Learning Climate Questionnaire [LCQ])의 일부 문항 및 Soenens 등(2007)의 척도를 기반으로 수정, 보완한 노보혜, 박성연과 지연경(2011)의 자율성 지지 척도를 사용하여 측정하였다. 유아의 불안은 Kamphaus와 Reynolds(1992)의 아동 행동문제 평가척도(Behavior Assessment System for Children [BASC])의 유아용 부모보고 척도를 이경숙, 신의진, 신동주, 전연진, 박진아(2003)가 표준화한 한국판 영유아 행동문제 평가척도(Korean Behavior Assessment System for Children [K-BASC]) 중 불안과 관련된 11문항을 사용하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS 22.0을 통해 변인들 간 상관계수를 산출하여 상관관계를 분석하였고, AMOS 23.0을 통해 유아의 행동억제와 어머니의 과보호적 양육행동 및 자율성 지지가 유아의 불안에 영향을 미치는 경로를 가정하여 구조방정식모형을 분석하였다. 마지막으로 어머니의 과보호적 양육행동과 자율성 지지 각각을 통한 개별매개효과를 확인하기 위해 팬텀변인(phantom variable)을 설정하고, 부트스트랩핑(bootstrapping) 방법을 통해 간접효과의 유의성을 확인하였다. 본 연구의 주요 결과로는 첫째, 유아의 행동억제가 불안에 미치는 직접적 영향은 유의하여, 유아의 행동억제 수준이 높을수록 불안을 더 보였다. 둘째, 유아의 행동억제가 어머니의 과보호적 양육행동을 통해 유아의 불안에 영향을 미치는 간접 경로는 유의하게 나타나, 유아의 행동억제가 높을수록 어머니가 과보호적 양육행동을 더 보이고, 그 결과 유아가 높은 수준의 불안을 보였다. 마지막으로, 유아의 행동억제가 어머니의 자율성 지지를 통해 유아의 불안에 영향을 미치는 간접 경로는 유의하여, 유아의 행동억제가 높을수록 어머니가 자율성 지지를 덜 하고, 그 결과 유아가 높은 수준의 불안을 보였다. 본 연구는 유아의 행동억제가 어머니의 과보호적 양육행동과 자율성 지지를 통해 유아의 불안에 미치는 영향을 살펴봄으로써, 유아의 행동억제와 불안 간 간계에서 어머니의 과보호적 양육행동과 자율성 지지의 역할을 확인하였다. 이를 통해 행동억제 성향의 유아가 경험하기 쉬운 불안 증상에 대한 예방과 개입의 중요성 뿐 아니라, 행동억제가 높은 유아의 경우 어머니의 양육행동에 따라 불안이 증가 되거나 감소 될 수 있음을 밝혔다. 본 연구의 결과가 억제된 기질의 유아를 자녀로 둔 어머니들이 자녀의 특성에 대해 이해하고, 가정에서 이에 적절한 양육을 할 수 있도록 돕는 부모교육 프로그램 개발 및 상담현장에서의 기초자료로 활용되길 기대한다.;The purpose of this study was to examine the relations between preschoolers’ behavioral inhibition, maternal overprotective parenting and autonomy support, and anxiety. In addition, the mediating roles of maternal overprotective parenting and autonomy support on the relations between preschoolers’ behavioral inhibition and anxiety was investigated. A total of 295 preschoolers and their mothers were subjects of this study. Mothers completed the questionnaire concerning their parenting behavior, preschoolers’ behavioral inhibition and anxiety. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 program and AMOS 23.0 program. The main results of this study were as follows: First, preschoolers’ behavioral inhibition was significantly related with anxiety. Preschoolers who had higher levels of behavioral inhibition showed higher anxiety. Second, maternal overprotective parenting mediated relations between preschoolers’ behavioral inhibition and anxiety. Mothers who perceived that their children had higher behavioral inhibition showed overprotective parenting, thus their children showed higher anxiety. Lastly, maternal autonomy support mediated relations between preschoolers’ behavioral inhibition and anxiety. Mothers who perceived that their children had higher behavioral inhibition showed lower autonomy support, thus their children showed higher anxiety. These findings emphasize the importance of reducing maternal overprotective parenting and promoting autonomy support to prevent preschoolers’ anxiety. In addition, maternal autonomy support is more appropriate for behaviorally inhibited preschoolers to reduce risk for anxiety. Findings of this study can be used as a foundation for developing programs to help mothers understand their children’s inhibited temperament and behaviors.
