｢형비포치(衡泌鋪置)｣를 통해 본 서유구(徐有榘)의 향촌 공간 구상

Abstract

이 논문은 ｢형비포치(衡泌鋪置)｣의 향촌 주거 공간에 관한 연구이다. ｢형비포치｣는 풍석(楓石) 서유구(徐有榘, 1764∼1845)의 '임원경제지(林園經濟志)' 제14지(志) '이운지(怡雲志)' 권1에 수록되어 있으며, ‘은자가 살아가는 집의 배치’라는 뜻으로 임원의 주거 공간에 관한 저술이다. ｢형비포치(衡泌鋪置)｣에 수록된 주거 공간에 관한 내용은 <총론(總論)>, <원림·간소(園林·澗沼)>, <재료정사(齋寮亭榭)>, <궤탑·문구(几搨·文具)> 네 부분으로 나뉘어 구성되어 있다. <총론>은 향촌 거주와 생활에 대한 전반적인 소개의 글이고, <원림·간소>는 향촌 거주지를 위한 조경과 관련된 문제를 다루고 있으며, <재료정사>에서는 향촌에 구성하고자 하는 다양한 생활 공간에 대해 소개하며, 마지막 <궤탑·문구>에서는 조성된 주거 공간 내부에 기물을 배치하는 각양각색의 방법을 서술한다. 이렇게 볼 때, ｢형비포치｣는 향촌 주거지 주변의 조경, 건축물의 조영을 위한 방법과 내부 인테리어까지 배려한 ‘전면적인 주거 공간 구상’이라 볼 수 있다. ｢형비포치｣의 공간들은 조선의 산수와 환경에서 집을 짓고 사는 일에 대한 고민과 함께 건축과 조경에 대한 깊이 있는 성찰, 향촌 사대부가 향촌 현실을 개선하고 삶을 영위하는 데 도움이 되는, 바꿔 말하면, 서유구가 찬술한 '임원경제지'에 담은 자신의 임원경영의 이상을 실현하고자 하는 구체적인 의도를 지니고 있음을 알 수 있다. 본고에서는 서유구의 주거에 대한 고민과 성찰을 ｢형비포치｣의 주거 공간을 통해 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 먼저 ｢형비포치｣가 나온 배경이 될 수 있는 조선 후기 주거 문화에 대한 검토를 거쳐 ｢형비포치｣가 가진 구성의 특색이 무엇인지 살펴보고, ｢형비포치｣ 구성이 갖는 체계적이고 포괄적이며 실용적인 성격을 알아보았다. 이어서 <총론(總論)>, <원림·간소(園林·澗沼)>, <재료정사(齋寮亭榭)>에 수록된 개별 주거 공간의 내용에 대한 고찰을 통해 서유구가 향촌 공간에서 염원하는 이상적 생활과 터전은 어떤 것인지 알아보고, 상상의 원림에 관한 글인 ｢장취원기｣를 통해 서유구가 배운 이상적인 주거 환경을 조선에 실현하기 위해 서유구가 마련한 방안으로 울타리 조성법, 연못 조영법 등을 소개해 보았다. <재료정사>에서는 먼저 서유구의 독특한 심미 취향이 반영된 사대부의 문화 공간이 가진 의미를 알아보고, 이어서 주거 외부에 구성된 농업, 목축어업, 여성 방직업, 교육 공간, 출판 공간, 약실 등의 내용을 통해, 이들 공간이 향촌 구성원이 함께하는 공간의 성격을 가지고 있음을 보여주었다. 제4장을 통해 본고에서는 제3장에서 논의한 내부의 문화 공간을 경화세족의 문화적 취향과 연관 지어 고찰하고, 본고에서는 공동체형 공간의 성격을 구체적으로 명시하기 위해 향촌민들이 함께하는 공간의 의미로 ‘공유형(共有形) 향촌 공간’으로 명명하였으며, 서유구가 공유형(共有形) 향촌 공간을 구상하게 된 체험적 배경과 공간 구상을 통해 서유구가 향촌 생활 속에서 지향한 바가 무엇인지 살펴보았다. ｢형비포치｣가 '임원경제지'에서 차지하는 분량은 250분의 1 정도로 작으나, ｢형비포치｣에서 구상한 주거 공간은 서유구가 '임원경제지'에 담은 자신의 임원 경영의 구현 방안을 구체적으로 밝히고 있다는 점에서 중요성을 갖는다. ;This paper aims to study Hyungbipochi (衡泌鋪置) included in Yiwunji of Imwon Gyeongjeji (林園經濟志) by Poongseok (楓石) Seo-Yugu (徐有榘: 1764-1845). Hyungbipochi means "the arrangement of a house in which a hermit lives" and is a piece of writing regarding living spaces in the countryside. Hyungbipochi is included in the first book of Yiwunji (怡雲志) in the 14th chapter of the Imwon Gyeongjeji. Yiwunji is the part that is related to the act of creating meaning from the two objectives of composing Imwon Gyeongjeji revealed by Seo Yugu, and is composed of content related to culture and art. Hyungbipochi is a text that describes the living spaces required for a scholar-bureaucrat to live in a country village. It includes attitudes and thoughts related to various issues of country living, and reflects Seo's concerns regarding his dwellings more than any other text included in Imwon Gyeongjeji as the text has the highest frequency being cited in his own work. The content related to living spaces in Hyungbipochi is divided into four sections: "Chongnon"(總論), "Wollimganso"(園林澗沼), "Jaeryojeongsa"(齋寮亭榭), and "Gwetammungu" (几搨文具). "Chongnon" provides an overview of country living and life. "Wollimganso" explores issues related to landscaping in a country residence. "Jaeryojeongsa" is an introduction to the various living spaces that he would like to establish in the country, and lastly, "Gwetammungu" describes the various methods of placing objects inside the established living space. As a whole, Hyungbipochi can be seen as a "comprehensive plan for living spaces" that considers the landscape surrounding the country residence, construction methods for structures, and even interior design. This paper summarizes the importance that Seo Yugu’s Hyungbipochi has as a "comprehensive plan for country living" in the following two points: First, the living spaces included in Hyungbipochi are important as they include various content through out the16 chapters of Imwon Gyeongjeji, and in the fact that they are integrated into the physical basis that is the country living space. Second, it has the advantage of revealing the concerns and aims of Seo regarding living, as Hyungbipochi is cited more than any other text from Imwon Gyeongjeji in his own writing of Geumhwa Gyeongdokgi. This paper examines the unique characteristics of the spaces included in Hyungbipochi and highlights aspects of country living devised by Seo based on the a forementioned fact that the living spaces included in Hyungbipochi have content from Imwon Gyeongjeji, and reveal Seo's concerns and aims as it contains a greater reflection of his opinions than any other parts of Imwon Gyeongjeji. Overall, this paper examines a space that Seo shared with country residents and others outside the private space in Hyungbipochi, and we refer to this space as a "shared-type country space." For more detailed discussion on the planning of the "shared-type country space," an examination was made on the basis by which Seo planned his country space and the life he aimed to live in that space. In addition, contemplation was made on the type of life he aimed to create within the country space. Although Hyungbipochi only makes up a tiny portion, a hundredth of Imwon Gyeongjeji, the research on living spaces in Hyungbipochi includes a broad amount of knowledge from Imwon Gyeongjeji and shows them within the space of a country village . In addition, it is an important piece that shows the "shared-type space" that Seo Yugu ultimately aimed to create in the countryside, along with a sense of country community to which he aspired.
