Abstract
Fashion and architecture take a very similar path in that it should be directed toward the art of sculpture, which is part of society, culture and life and takes into account relevance and aestheticity around human body, space and athletic concepts. In the field of fashion and architecture, a lot of research and experiments have been conducted recently to express various outer skins. Modern design tends to create novelty beyond the existing framework for various dimensions of expression. In this study, we wanted to study fashion design using laser cutting techniques based on the formative characteristics of UN Studio's architectural work, which is drawing attention as an original architectural design method. The purpose of this study was to present differentiated fashion design by incorporating colors, forms, and expressions in UN Studio's architectural works into fashion design. The content and methods of this study are as follows. First, we analyzed the background of the establishment of UN Studio, the world of works, and especially the formative characteristics on the outer skin of architectural works through professional books related to architecture and design, academic papers, academic research journals, and the official website of architects. In addition, a demonstration of fashion design applied to architectural outerwear was analyzed based on fashion collection data and prior research. Second, the application method was investigated based on the theoretical consideration of laser cutting technique and the case applied to fashion design in order to effectively incorporate the formative characteristics shown on UN Studio architectural envelope into fashion design. Third, based on the above theoretical considerations and analysis, a total of five fashion works applied with laser cutting techniques were designed and produced. The following is a summary of what has been obtained from the theoretical background review. First, UN Studio is a popular architectural studio today, and as much as it unravels the form, structure, and cladding of buildings into art through a special system called the diagram, it can find sufficient basis for the method application to fashion design today from the design philosophy and style of UN Studio. UN Studio embodies a special architectural outer shell through its unique architectural design system, which may be in line with the recent trend in fashion design. Second, after analyzing the morphological characteristics shown on the architectural outer skin through the representative works of UN Studio, we found continuity of the outer skin unit, stereophonicity of color representation, and interaction with the environment. Third, laser cutting, which is the main keyword as a technique of this study, confirmed the diversity of processing techniques and recognized the importance of selecting the properties and ranges of available materials through processing principles and processes. The conclusions obtained through the design and production of fashion works in this study are as follows. First, I recognized the value and importance of modern architecture as a source of fashion design idea or creation in the process of drawing up the outer skin of selected buildings centering on motif arrangement and assembly among the works of UN Studio. Second, the vertical appearance of a wide silhouette close to the A-line helped to express the characteristics of the architectural outer layer. In particular, by sewing more than two layers of materials using PVC with minimal trial, the formative characteristics of UN Studio buildings with two layers of material and unit form could be represented. Third, the laser cutting technique, a technique that allows unit form to be produced in a constant form easily and quickly, was effective in showing the continuity of UN Studio's cladding unit. Also, plastic bolts and nuts were used to connect unit shapes to show continuity. Fourth, by using solid acrylic material to express the outer shell of the building, the future-oriented design could be completed and through the same form of iteration, it became a source to maximize continuity among the outer-skin molding features of the UN Studio building. Fifth, through translucent PVC and holographic PVC layer, various color and spatial expression were possible. This actively reflects much of the material, structure, color, etc. of the UN Studio architectural envelope in terms of color representation. In particular, the use of holographic PVCs was suitable for maximising the formative characteristics of interactions with the environment because of the ambient effects. Sixth, LED lights were actively placed for effective color and texture presentation, and the effect of artificial light was suitable for converting color representation expressed by natural light into artificial light in the three dimensions of the color representation of UN Studio. Based on the detailed architectural design process presented on the official website of UN Studio, this study was able to develop detailed characteristics and design plans. Recognizing the special relationship between fashion and architecture, it is hoped that this study will serve as a clue to more diverse academic studies. In particular, through modern architectural design, we will be able to read various shapes, colors, and material trends and expand the scope of design inspiration and methodologies that are possible in fashion design.
