현대 주거공간을 위한 반월반의 재해석

Abstract

주거공간은 인간이 일상생활을 영위하는 배경으로서, 한 사회의 가치관과 이념 등을 살펴볼 수 있는 사회문화적 산물이다. 그러나 주거환경과 사회문화적 특성의 관계에도 불구하고 국내의 가구 디자인은 전통문화가 충분히 이행되지 못했다는 한계를 지닌다. 다만, 주거형태의 많은 부분이 서양식으로 대체되는 와중에도 온돌 문화로 대표되는 좌식 생활 습관이 남아 우리나라의 생활양식에 영향을 미쳤다. 이처럼 입식 문화에 좌식 생활 행태가 반영된 독특한 ‘반좌식 문화’에 따라, 우리나라는 대부분의 가정에서 좌식 테이블을 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있게 되었다. 전통에 대한 현대적 시도가 여전히 부족하고, 꾸준히 증가하는 1,2인 가구에서 공간 효율이 좋은 가구가 주목받고 있는 가운데, 이동식 가구였던 소반의 특징을 살린 좌식 테이블은 이에 좋은 해법이 될 수 있을 것이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 전통 생활 양식과 현대 주거환경 간의 연계성을 찾고, 과거의 좌식 문화와 현대의 반좌식 문화 사이에서 이를 연결하는 매개체로 소반을 선정하였다. 그중에서도 곁반으로 쓰이던 반월반을 통해 국내 생활양식에의 활용 가치를 확인하고, 오늘날 디자인 연구 방향을 탐색하고자 한다. 먼저, 이론적 고찰을 통해 소반의 고전적 특성을 개념, 기능, 조형으로 나누어 정리하였다. 아울러 변화하는 주거환경에 대한 이해와 반좌식 생활 행태에 대한 연구를 바탕으로 국내의 기존 좌식 테이블 400여 점을 살펴보았다. 또, 3인 이내 소규모 가구가 주를 이루는 20-30대를 대상으로 가구 내 테이블 현황에 대한 설문을 진행함으로써 소비자의 필요와 수요에 대한 보다 실제적인 데이터를 얻고자 했다. 이러한 내용을 근거로 소반의 고유한 조형성과 기능성을 현대적으로 탐색, 디자인 목업(mock up)을 진행하였으며, 조합형 좌식 테이블을 제작하였다. 이에 본 고는 변화하는 주거 형태에 적합한 좌식 테이블을 제안하는 것에 중점을 두고, 전통으로부터 찾은 새로운 가구 유형을 제시함으로써 이후 한국적 디자인을 일상으로 확장하는 데 도움이 되고자 한다.;We humans as members of a society spent and invest substantial part of our daily activities in our residential place, thus naturally different facets of sociocultural characteristics are reflected into this limited and private area. However, despite the fact that our residential place is an embodiment of the current social values, a hiatus exists between our living space and interior furniture where past cultural heritage is not properly reflected upon our domestic furniture design. Therefore, it is not wrong to make an argument that major portion of Koreans’ present living structure implements Western idea of “stand-up” custom. Yet, Korea’s sedentary living custom which is best known via Ondol structure, still plays a significant role in our residential environment, essentially creating a distinctive “semi-sedentary” lifestyle, leading to dissemination of sedentary tables amongst majority of Korean households. As a new wave of single person households has been going on for a quiet of some time, interest towards space efficient furniture is growing more than ever, rather than attempting to elicit a new solution to this needs looking through Western perspective, Korea’s traditional furniture design can be more effective in undertaking this new trend. The author believes that Korea’s traditional portable sedentary table “Soban” is a perfect example that incorporates many of the essential traits suitable for the modern semi sedentary needs. In essence, this study aims to identify and discover the correlation between modern and traditional living style, while using Soban as the main medium to connect the past sedentary living style with contemporary semi-sedentary culture. More specifically, the author looks through the lens of a traditional dining table Banwolban(literally meaning a “half-moon tray table”) to assess the value of traditional design within the modern residential realm and induce unique research approach going forward. Firsthand, this study provided theoretical definition on Soban’s principal attributes coming from three differing perspectives; concept, function and form. As part of the research to further expand the understanding of evolving residential environments and semi-sedentary life style, this study examined more than 400 domestic sedentary tables. In addition, by conducting a survey targeting single-person household in their 20s and 30s, the author was able to obtain real-life dataset gaining better understanding on customer needs. As a result, with the exploration of unique formativeness and functionality of Soban based on a contemporary standpoint, a design mockup was created and finally a sedentary table-cum-shelf was manufactured. In conclusion, this study’s main emphasis lies in presenting a modern Banwolban suitable for the new forthcoming residential environment, and attempts to disseminate the applicability of the Korea’s traditional furniture design within the daily living custom.
