Abstract
;This study examined the melody relation between song, Piri, and Geomungo of Namchang Gyemyeonjo Gagok and inquired into the characteristics and functions of Geomungo. The range of study includes the 13 songs from the seven original songs(i.e., Chosudaeyeop, Isudaeyeop, Junggeo, Pyeonggeo, Dugeo, Samsudaeyeop, Soyong) of Namchang Gyemyeonjo Gagok to 6 ariettas(i.e., Eonnong, Pyeongnong, Gyerak, Pyeonsudaeyeop, Eonpyeon, Taepyeongga), and as the study method, the movement was divided into Chodu or Ilgak, the part of melody linked with the first sentence, and Idu, with the second sentence, and a phrase to compare the process of the main tone of each phrase and examine the melody relation between song, Piri, and Geomungo. Moreover, based on the repeated melody and the end of the line of Geomungo, the melodic features and the use in the melody relation were analyzed. The results of the study were as follows: Firstly, the number of the entire Namchang Gyemyeonjo Gagok phrases was 352. Among them, the phrase of the single-progression melody relation was 313 and that of the composite-progression was 39. Among the single-progress phrases, the ensemble phrases proceeded in the same structural melody as the melody between song, Piri, and Geomungo took the largest portion of 94, about 28%, while the phrases of Piri-different-type were 60, about 17%, of individual type were 59, about 16%, of song-different-type were 54, about 15%, and of Geomungo-different-type were 46, about 13%, in order. In case of the Piri-different-type melody relation which took the second largest portion after the ensemble phrases showed the same process of song and Geomungo melody, and Geomungo-different-type also implied that it proceeded with the independent melody of Geomungo. Accordingly, it was found that Geomungo played the main role of melody along with song in Gagok, with the strong presence while proceeding independently like the individual type and Geomungo-different-type phrases, and took the pivotal role in Gagok. Chosudaeyeop, Isudaeyeop, Junggeo, Pyeonggeo, Dugeo, and Soyong that belonged to the original Gagok showed the phrases with the ensemble melody relation mostly, while Samsudaeyeop showed the song-different-type phrases most often. Among the ariettas, the ensemble phrases appeared most often in Eonnong, Gyerak, and Taepyeongga, whereas the phrases of ensemble and Geomungo-different-type melody relations appeared at the same rate in Pyeongnong. In Pyeonsudaeyeop, Piri-different-type and individual phrases appeared frequently in the same ratio, and in Eonpyeon, the Piri-different-type phrases appeared most often. The phrases with the composite-progression melody relation that showed the two melody relation in one phrase was about 11% of the entire phrases, which wasn’t a big take-up, but it showed that song, Piri, and Geomungo formed the melody relation in various ways. The form of musical performance of Gagok consists of a song and an instrumental concert but the accompanied instrument not only took the role of accompaniment but also had the organic melody progression maintaining the complementary and equal relation with the song which proceeded as the main melody. Secondly, the results of examining the melodic features based on several fixed ostinatos that appeared repeatedly in the accompanied melody of Geomungo were as follows. First, the distinguishing melody among the accompanied Geomungo melodies of Namchang Gyemyeonjo Gagok was eight including 󰊱(㣩-僙-㑖), 󰊲(僙-㑖), 󰊳(㑣-㑖-僙), 󰊴(㑖-僙), 󰊵(太-黃-㑣-㑖), 󰊶(僙-㣩-僙), 󰊷(㑖-㑣-㣩-僙-㑖), and 󰊸(黃-㑣-㑖-黃-㑣). These melodies either appeared many times in one musical piece or the same melodies appeared in many different musical pieces. The melody of Geomungo contrasted to the free melodies of song and Piri while maintaining the original in the ensemble-type melody relation. Meanwhile, in the Geomungo-different-type melody relation, Geomungo showed a strong presence proceeding with its unique melody or played the role of dividing and maintaining the beat, while a tune was usually prolonged by song and Piri. The melodic progression of song and Piri was showy with many main points and decorative tones compared to Geomungo, and the tunes that deviated from the mode such as ‘太’ and ‘無’ appeared often. This more played the role of main points which appeared and decorated before and after the tunes of “黃·仲·林” rather than the major compositional notes which formed melodies. Among Geomungo melodies, there was the end with constant regularity. The end notes are five including “㑣下”(Muhyeon), “㣩中”(Gwaesangcheong), “㣩”, “㣴文”(Munhyeon), and “僙”, and can be divided into 13 types depending on the melody and progression from the inside of the end phrase to the end note. The end type of Geomungo appeared often in a fixed form in one musical piece to many different musical pieces just like the repeated melodies analyzed previously. It had the structural function of dividing the phrases of a musical piece and the end using an open string while having the complementary melody type to song and Piri simultaneously based on “黃” and “林.” The features and functions of melodies appeared commonly in the repeated melodies and the end of Geomungo were the melody progression devoted to the Gyemyeonjo scale of “黃·仲·林”, maintenance of the connectivity and unity between musical pieces with the repeated appearance of the same melodies, maintenance of a single note and supplementation of the continuant sound of song and Piri through the repeated pronunciation, and the tone change of a pitch using the instrumental method and the open string. Thus, the frame notes of song, Piri, and Geomungo of Namchang Gyemyeonjo Gagok were compared to examine their melody relation, and the features of the accompanied melody of Geomungo were inquired. Geomungo was not limited to the accompanied role of song but it fully showed its presence in the complementary and organic relation with song and Piri by playing the main melody of song together or having the unique melody progression and various expressions.
