Abstract
Although emission of air pollutant from construction sites contribute significantly to the ambient air quality, especially, particulate matters (PM), lack of information on the PM emitted from construction site makes it difficult to develop effective air quality management policy. The goals of this study are (1) to quantify the mass concentrations and carbonaceous and elemental compositions of PM10 in a construction site and surrounding area and (2) to find out the main contributor of the observed PM10. The PM¬10 sampled were measured at a construction site erecting a 13 story industrial plant locate in urban area and a community center which is 1.3 km from the construction site in Korea from July 2019 to January 2020. Also, the PM10 mean concentration data at the boundary of the construction site and an urban air quality monitoring station about 5 km from the construction site were used. During the study period average concentration of the total PM10 from the construction site was 87 µg m-3 and ranged from 33 µg m-3 to 172 µg m-3 while the average concentrations of the boundary of the site, community center and the urban air quality monitoring station were 41 µg m-3, 50 µg m-3 and 42 µg m-3, respectively. The mean concentration of organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in construction site was higher than that of other cities in Korea mainly due to the activities related to construction resources and construction equipment. The EC concentration from construction site and the number of construction equipment operated was correlated statistically. The result of 7 metal elements analysis heavily varied between the elements and date but the two highest components were Ca and Al derived from concrete in the construction site. The particle number concentration in the size range 1.0 ~ 10 µm accounted for more than 99% of the total and the particle mass size distribution was composed over 96% in the 1.0 ~ 10 µm range. The major PM10 emission sources from construction site were erosion of concrete and exhaust of construction equipment. The road dust from highway and local road also affected the PM10 concentration of construction site. The concentration of PM10 , OC, EC and metal element from construction site did not affect those of the community center during studied period.
