Abstract
The purpose of the study is first to extract motivation of social media news users and second to analyze the relationship between the intention to continuous use of social media news types and the news trustworthiness and user satisfaction towards the news. In this study, the types of news were divided into three categories: snack culture card news, political pod-cast news, and social media mediated mainstream news media. After conducing online survey on users who had experience using new through social media, retrieved a total of 347 survey answers. According to factor analysis, a total of seven motivations for using social media news were extracted and named after 'professionalism and reliability', 'comparison of opinions', 'timeliness and fulfillment of information', 'convenience and news curation', 'seeking for similar opinions', 'seeking for diversity' and 'habitual consumption'. The users' clusters were divided into four groups of people who use all three kinds of news contents, and those who use each one of the three news contents. The analysis showed that the differences between those who use all three news contents and the rests were significant, however differences among content types were not significant enough. On study part 2, motivations which had significant effect on continuous usage of Card news were 'convenience and customization', 'seeking for similar opinions' and ‘habitual consumption'. More to that, 'convenience and news curation' were found to have mediating effect of trustworthiness and user satisfaction as well as direct effect to continuous usage. However, 'seeking for similar opinions' and ‘habitual consumption' only had mediating effect of trustworthiness and user satisfaction to continuous usage, which means if those two variables are not mediated, the two motivations can not directly effect continuous usage. Also all three motivations had positive(+) effect with all three variables. Second, motivations which had significant positive(+) effect on continuous usage of political pod-cast news were 'seeking for similar opinions' and ‘seeking for diversity’. Multiple regression result showed that the motivation for ‘exchanging opinions and comparison between other views’ had a negative(-) relationship with the intent of continuous usage, but after analyzing through Process Macro (Hayes, 2018), both direct and indirect effect to continuous usage were insignificant. Moreover, ‘seeking for similar opinions’ was not directly effective for the continuous usage of pod-cast news, but indirect effects mediating trustworthiness and user satisfaction were significant. Which confirms that users with higher motivation of ‘seeking for similar opinions’ were more likely to feel that the pod-cast news are reliable and satisfied, and this relates to higher intention of continuous usage. ‘Seeking for diversity’ were found to have no direct effect to continuous usage, and have only mediating effect of user satisfaction. Therefore, people with higher motivation for ‘seeking for diversity’ were more likely to be satisfied with pod-cast news contents and this related to higher intent to continuous usage. Finally, motivations which had significant positive(+) effect on continuous usage of social media mediated mainstream news media were ‘timeliness and fulfillment of information’ 'convenience and news curation', 'seeking for similar opinions'. The motivation of ‘timeliness and fulfillment of information’ and ‘convenience and news curation’ were both significant in terms of direct and indirect effect of trustworthiness and user satisfaction toward continuous usage of the news contents. Which means even without satisfaction and trust towards the news content, people with high motivation of ‘timeliness and fulfillment of information’ were more likely to continuously use the same news contents. However the motivation for ‘seeking for similar opinions’ had only significant effect when trustworthiness and satisfaction mediated the news content. According to the study results, the highest motivation that social media news users had were found to be ‘timeliness and fulfillment of information’, ‘convenience and news curation’, and ‘professionalism and reliability’. However, ‘professionalism and reliability’ was not related to actual continuous usage of all 3 news types, which showed that social media news contents need to work on developing contents with enhanced professionalism and reliability. More to that ‘seeking for similar opinions’ and ‘exchanging opinions and comparison between other views’ were ranked about the similar extent, however only ‘seeking for similar opinions’ were related to all 3 news types. This means that news contents should be created to provide users with enhanced function of ‘exchanging opinions and comparison between other views’.
