Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of inconsistent corporate social responsibility behaviors and corporate social responsibility types on its corporate reputation. Another purpose of the study is to articulate the mediating effects of emotion between inconsistent corporate social responsibility behaviors, corporate social responsibility types and corporate reputation. As social interest in corporate social responsibility (CSR) increases, many companies carry out corporate social responsibility activities and actively publicize them as strategies to build a positive image. Corporate social responsibility activities were perceived as very important activities of the entity to maintain good and close relationships with its stakeholders. However, a study by Wagner (2009) found that if a company's statements and actions are inconsistent, people feel corporate hypocrisy over the company, which negatively affects its attitude toward the company. In this study, it was intended to expand this to verify that there are differences in the appraisal of the company's reputation and sentiment among people depending on the type of responsibility, even if there is an act-motivation as well as inconsistency in speech and behavior in the field of CSR. This paper divides the inconsistent behavior of CSR into two types, including inconsistent statement and behavior and the consistency between statement and behavior but over-hyped(inconsistency between behavior and motivation). Through obtaining sample data from experiment questionnaires, this paper empirically tests the impact of these two inconsistent behaviors on corporate reputation. This study conducted experimental studies on the simulated enterprises and was conducted as a 2X2 factor experiment of two types of CSR inconsistencies (words and behavior mismatch /action-motivation mismatch) and two types of corporate social responsibilities (economy responsibility/philanthropic responsibility). The variables were designed by groups to create a total of four experimental groups, randomly assigning stimulants to respondents in their teens, 20s, 30s and 40s. A total of 200 people (male 100 and female 100) participated in the experiment, with 50 people assigned to each of the four types, with the same age and gender proportion. Regression analysis in SPS 22.0, frequency analysis, and the medium effect test in process model 4 were used to verify the study theory, and the results of the study were as follows. As for the results, in the case where corporate social responsibility activities are inconsistent with words and behavior, economic responsibility will have a more negative effect on corporate reputation than philanthropic responsibility. In the situation where corporate social responsibility activities are inconsistent with behavior-motivation, philanthropic responsibility has had a more negative impact on corporate reputation than on economic responsibility.  Second, In the case of mismatch between corporate social responsibility, it was found that, among the types of corporate social responsibility, the effect of economic responsibility on emotions is more severe than philanthropic responsibility. And, in a action-motivation mismatch situation, philanthropic responsibility has been found to have a more negative effect on emotion than economic responsibility.  Third, in research hypothesis 3, the mediating effect of emotional anger and suspicion between the types of corporate social responsibility mismatch and types of responsibility and corporate reputation evaluation was verified, which revealed a negative partial mediating effect on the relationship between inconsistent CSR type and CSR type and corporate reputation. This study studied changes in public sentiment and corporate reputation by interacting with CSR discrepancies and CSR types. Unlike previous CSR studies, it is not only limited to analyzing the positive effects of CSR, but it can be considered as a new attempt to conduct research through experiments in a mismatch situation where CSR was not properly performed. In addition, this study filled the gap in the field of CSR research, and I believe that it can be helpful for companies in the future to implement the CSR strategy. This study studied inconsistent CSR behavior and CSR type interaction to change public emotion and corporate reputation evaluation. Unlike previous CSR studies, it is not only limited to analyzing the positive effects of CSR, but it can be considered as as a new attempt to conduct research through experiments in the situation of inconsistency that CSR was not properly performed. In addition, this study has filled some gaps in the field of CSR research and believes that it can be helpful for companies in the future to implement the CSR strategy.
