Abstract
The purpose of this study was to prove the suitability of middle school music appreciation through visual thinking, while proving its adequacy in middle school classes. The research methods I used to accomplish the main purpose were as follows. First of all, I reviewed and analysed prior research of concepts related to visual thinking in order to present its theoretical background. It has been redefined as an activity where students listen to music, present their writings and images through video or other digital tools, and communicate with others about what they have achieved during class. Also, the class stage and teaching techniques of general visual thinking have been modified to suit the music subject. Secondly, the direction of music, curriculum and textbook revised in 2015 were analyzed. On the basis of this, I selected 4 songs as major supplementary music material, as well as learning goals and content. The four songs were; Vivaldi – Four Seasons, Smetana – Moldau (from Western music) and Yeongsanhoesan, Sujecheon (from Korean music). Each of the four songs were developed with two sessions of instruction plans into a total of 8 teaching guidelines that were applied to visual thinking. In these classes, students can do music activities based on visual thinking activities. Thirdly, the guidance plans were validated by three contemporary music teachers. As a result, the class stage and visual thinking teaching techniques were well applied, and the possibility of practical application was also received positively. In addition, the activities in the guidance program were said to encourage active participation of students and bring about practical music experiences through these vivid novel activities which would in turn attract the students’interest. However, there were several opinions concerning the improvement of the guidance plans: The proper distribution of class hours to ensure there is enough time to listen to original music after the visual thinking activities. The prevention of excessive focus of the listening class on visual thinking activities, for which an appropriate layout should be selected and organized. So, when developing and applying the guidance plan using visual thinking on the basis of practical suitability, the appropriate time distribution for visual thinking activities and listening to music must be taken into account, and it is suggested that various visual tools, materials and examples for the music appreciation through visual thinking are needed. I also suggested that music class guidance using visual thinking would be applied in other fields. Through this study, I suggest that music appreciation class using visual thinking be applied in practical music application fields. I conclude that, through visual thinking activities, students can creatively express their own thoughts and feelings in communication with other people and experience a variety of music.
