문자를 중심으로 본 로버트 인디애나(Robert Indiana)의 휴머니스트적 태도

Abstract

본 논문은 문자를 중심으로 본 로버트 인디애나(Robert Indiana, 1928-2018)의 휴머니스트적 태도에 관한 연구이다. 인디애나는 뉴욕미술계에 등장한 1950년대 중반부터 문자를 통해 인간에 대한 애정과 성찰이 드러나는 작품을 꾸준히 제작해왔다. 그동안 인디애나에 대한 선행연구는 주로 문자에 담긴 소비사회의 리얼리티 때문에 인디애나의 작품세계를 팝아트의 맥락에서 해석해왔다. 이에 본 연구는 인디애나 작품에서 보이는 인간에 대한 끝없는 관심에 주목해, 그의 작품이 인간의 가치와 존엄을 이야기하는 휴머니스트적 태도를 보여주고 있음을 밝히고자 하였다. 이를 위해 인디애나의 조형적 태도에 영향을 준 미술사적, 개인사적 배경을 살펴보고, 인디애나의 작품을 작품 속 문자의 주제별로 나누어 휴머니스트적 태도의 표출 양상을 분석하였다.

작품분석에 앞서, 문자가 인디애나의 주된 조형 수단이 된 미술사적 배경과 인디애나의 휴머니스트적 태도가 형성된 개인사적 배경을 알아보았다. 20세기 초 문자의 조형적 가능성이 탐구된 이래, 문자는 내용전달력과 조형미를 바탕으로 휴머니스트적 태도를 보였던 예술가들에게 조형 수단으로 사용되었다. 1960년대에 팝아트 작가들은 문자를 반복해서 그려 소비사회 속에서 몰개성화되어가는 인간을 상기시켰다. 인디애나는 팝아트 작가들의 문제의식을 부분적으로 공유했지만, 궁극적으로는 문자를 통해 인간의 가치와 존엄의 문제를 이야기하고자 했다. 여기에는 인디애나가 전후의 미국 사회에서 성장하며 겪었던 경험들도 영향을 미쳤다. 물질적으로 풍요로웠던 사회 속에서 빈곤계층으로 자라며 양모와 친척들의 죽음을 지켜보고, 보수적인 사회적 분위기 속에서 동성애자로 살았던 경험은 인디애나를 사회로부터 소외된 인간의 삶에 주목하게 했다.

작품에서 인디애나의 휴머니스트적 태도는 정치적 폭력성을 비판하는 것으로 나타났다. 1960년대 초반부터 그는 문자의 의미전달력에 힘입어 흑인, 이민자 같은 미국 사회의 소수집단에 대한 제도적 불평등의 존재를 드러냈고, 평등이 정치제도로 보장되는 사회를 위해 현실정치에 대한 기대감을 표현하였다. 그리고 인간성을 말살하는 전쟁과 테러에 맞서 국제 사회의 평화를 염원하기도 했다. 이것은 인종과 국가를 초월해 모든 인간이 동등한 정치적 권리와 안정을 누려야 한다는 인디애나의 휴머니스트적 태도의 발현이었다. 다른 한편으로, 인디애나는 일상적 삶과 관련된 문자를 통해 소비사회 속의 경제적 위계 구조를 드러내고 인간소외를 비판했다. 인디애나 작품 속 문자는 전후 미국 사회의 경제적 번영이 반영된 것이 아니라 중서부 노동계층의 삶이 반영된 것이었고, 나아가 그 사회를 지배했던 성적, 제도적 규율로부터 소외된 인간의 삶이 반영된 것이었다. 이는 인간이 경제적, 문화적 속박으로부터 해방되어 행복하기를 바란 인디애나의 휴머니스트적 태도를 보여준 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 수는 적으나 인디애나는 문학작품을 인간을 중심으로 재해석해 휴머니스트적 태도를 표출하기도 했다. 그는 문학작품에서 발췌한 문자를 조형적으로 구성하여, 원시적으로 묘사된 인간집단의 실제 존재를 부각하거나 집단 목표를 위해 희생되는 인간 존재를 조명하였다. 마지막으로, 인디애나는 종교적 의미를 가진 문자를 표현하는 방식을 통해 신 중심의 종교관이 아닌 인간 중심의 종교관을 구현하였다. 문장의 순서를 뒤집거나, 문자를 오락적으로 표현하여 그 문자에 담긴 신의 절대적 권위에 도전했던 것은 인디애나의 휴머니스트적 태도에서였다.

이와 같은 논의를 통해 본 연구는 인디애나 작업의 목표가 소비사회의 이면을 드러내는 데 그치는 것이 아니라, 정치와 사회, 문화, 종교의 모든 영역에서 인간의 평등과 행복을 억압하는 것에 반대하고 인간의 가치와 존엄을 수호하려는 데 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이처럼 본 논문은 팝아트의 측면에서 주로 해석되어 온 인디애나의 작품을 재고하여 작가에 대한 해석의 폭을 확장했다는 미술사적 의의를 가진다.;This dissertation addresses a study that contemplates on the humanist attitude of Robert Indiana (1928-2018) by focusing on the text. Since the mid-1950s when Indiana gained prominence in New York art scene, he has consistently produced artworks that demonstrate love and reflection on humans through the text. However, previous studies on Indiana have interpreted his works only in the context of Pop art due to the reality of consumer society connoted by the text. This study therefore highlights the perpetual interest in humans portrayed through Indiana’s artworks, in attempt to clarify that they illustrate the humanist attitudes about human values and dignity. To this end, this study examines the art-historical and personal background that influenced the compositional attitude of Indiana, then categorizes his artworks by the topic of the characters in each work to analyzed how his humanistic attitude is expressed.

Before analyzing the work, the study discusses the art-historical background in which text have become Indiana’s main compositional tool, and the personal background in which his humanist attitude was formed. Ever since the compositional possibilities of text have been explored in the early 20th century, text has been used as a compositional tool by the artists with humanist attitudes due to its expository nature and aesthetic value. In 1960s, Pop artists depicted text repeatedly to bring attention to deindividuation of human in consumer society. While Indiana partially shared the critical mind of those artists, he ultimately sought to illustrate the human values and dignity through text, which was also influenced by his own experience of growing up in the postwar American society. Growing up in poverty within the materially affluent society, witnessing the death of his parents and relatives, and living as a homosexual in a conservative social atmosphere have made Indiana to turn his eyes to the lives of socially marginalized people.

In his work, Indiana's humanist attitude was evident from his criticism on political violence. Using the expository nature of text since the early 1960s, he revealed the existence of inequalities for minority groups such as blacks and immigrants in American society, and expressed hope for realpolitik of a society where equality is secured by political system. He also longed for peace in the international community and stood against war and terror that exterminates humanity. That was how Indiana manifested his humanist attitude that all human beings should have equal political rights and social stability regardless of race and country. At the same time, Indiana revealed the economical hierarchy in consumer society and criticized human marginalization through text related to everyday life. The text in his work was not a reflection of the economic prosperity of postwar American society, but a reflection of the lives of Midwest working class. Further, it reflected the lives marginalized by the sexual and institutional rules dominating that society, which revealed the humanist attitude of Indiana who wished happiness and liberation from economic and cultural restraints for humans. Albeit few, some of Indiana’s work reinterpreted literatures by focusing on humans to express his humanist attitude. He artistically placed the text extracted from the literatures to highlight the actual existence of the primitively depicted human group or human existence sacrificed for group goals. Lastly, Indiana implemented a human-centered religious view, not god-centered, through the text with religious significance. Bantering with the sentence order or text shape was Indiana’s challenge against the god’s absolute authority implied in those text, and a manifestation of his humanist attitude.

Through this discussion, this study shows that the purpose of Indiana’s art has been not only to reveal the dark side of consumer society but also to resist oppression of human equality and happiness in all areas of politics, society, culture, and religion, and moreover, to defend human values and dignity. As such, this study conveys art-historical significance by broadening the range of artistic interpretation of Robert Indiana, through reexamination of his artworks that had been interpreted mostly in light of Pop art.
