Abstract
The purpose of this case study was to explore the changes in the level of competence among adults with intellectual disability in a vocational rehabilitation program who participated in the group music therapy. The study participants were four people in their 20s who are intellectually disabled in the vocational rehabilitation. The music therapy sessions were conducted for a total of five weeks in the sequence of the following procedures: pre-interview, intervention and post-interview. In this study, a group music therapy program was designed to enhance the relational and self-competence among people with intellectual disabilities. The program was conducted for a total of 12 sessions, about 45 minutes per session and three times a week, and group music therapy activities were conducted in accordance with the objectives of each step, taking into consideration of relational and self-competence aspects. Outcome data was extracted by carefully observing participants’ verbal and musical responses during the therapy sessions and verbal interviews. As a result of analyzing the participants' verbal and musical responses in relation to the operational definitions of relational and self-competence, it was found that participants expressed positive verbal remarks and demonstrated musical skills that reflected their improved competence levels. Participants were able to collaborate with the group members through the tone-chime activity and showed how they developed relational competence during the process of exchanging feedbacks and compliments. In addition, during the process of determining the group name and completing song lyrics, the participants explored the strengths and capabilities of other group members. Moreover, participants displayed improved level of self-competence and changed perception of their potential capabilities by successfully performing their musical roles during the process of recording the completed song. Overall, the group music therapy program provided a safe and comfortable space for the participants to expand their musical and non-musical capacity by providing a carefully designed program with a gradual increase in the difficulty level. The findings from this study is meaningful in that participants were able to experience an enhanced level of competence both in the relational and personal aspects, and that it implies the possibility of implementing group music therapy to promote competency among adults with intellectual disability.
