Abstract
The aim of this study is to explore differences in searching, and self-revision activities between experts and novices in the Korean-to-English translation process. Translation process efficiency and product quality control are achieved by searching and self-revision activities, which are integral to translation process in the digital age. Although these activities are important, and involve pedagogical difficulties, they have received little attention in domestic translation studies; only a few process-oriented researches with ‘think-aloud’ protocols and screen-recording data have been conducted until now. Against this backdrop, this study seeks to identify how novices differ from experts in searching activities—in terms of time, channels, sessions and queries, and in self-revision activities—in terms of moves, distance, scope and objective. The literature review shows that the use of screen recording and keystroke logging programs is appropriate for the analysis of web-search and self-revision activities during the translation process. Further, studies on searching and self-revision activities during translation were referred to build a framework for data analysis. A pilot study was conducted with an expert and a novice to verify the adequacy of experiment conditions. An experiment was conducted on two different groups: Five experts and five novices. Experts are translators with more than five years of experience after graduating from the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation, and novices are first-year students in the Graduate School. All participants had Korean as their L1 (First Language). They were asked to translate two texts (each 160 words long) — a newspaper article and a report — from Korean to English, within a time frame. The translation process was recorded with Translog and Camtasia. The key findings of the experiment are as follows: Novices took longer to search than experts did, especially, in report translation, and paused more frequently for searching while translating. Consequently, a large part of their total translation time was spent in searching. Novices relied more on dictionaries than experts who preferred searching on search engines. Novices used an array of channels such as idiom dictionary, thesaurus, sample sentences, ludwig, blogs, and google scholar. Novices had more search sessions than experts, indicating that they were more likely to solve a problem using external resources. About 76% of sessions had one episode (search operation in one pause) in both groups, which means that at least seven out of ten searches were finished within one pause. However, unlike experts, novices were found to have 17% of sessions with more than four episodes, mainly due to inefficient searching skills, and delayed decision-making. Episodes with one or two steps comprised 80% of the search for the first text, and 90% for the second text, in both groups. This means that both experts and novices searched only once or twice within a single pause. However, novices had episodes with as many as ten steps, whereas experts had episodes with not more than five steps. Novices took many steps even while searching general expressions, whereas experts did so only in the case of idiomatic expressions or terminology. Novices preferred SL (Source Language) queries which comprised 50% to 80% of their search queries, whereas experts preferred TL (Target Language) queries; three experts used over 80% TL queries. Additionally, experts used mixed queries having both SL and TL. Novices applied Korean queries longer than two words in dictionaries which meant a heavy dependence on sample sentences. Experts, on the other hand, used one-word Korean queries in dictionaries. Novices had many one-word English queries arising from the previous dictionary search results, whereas experts made English queries without any usage of external resources. Novices were less likely to use English queries with more than two words not only because some of the novices rarely verified collocation in search engines, but also because experts frequently included prepositions and articles in their queries in order to narrow down the search results. The analysis result of initial queries showed that novices started their search with SL queries in dictionaries, whereas experts started with TL queries in search engines. As for subsequent queries, both experts and novices favored modified queries (a part of query was deleted, added, or changed). However, novices used more repeated queries, whereas experts used more unique queries. During the self-revision process, novices used more substitutions (revision moves are categorized as insertions, deletions and substitutions) than experts, and consequently, performed more revision moves in the drafting phase. The novice-expert difference was more significant in report translation. However, there was also the influence of personal style. Both groups had participants who made a remarkable number of revisions in the drafting phase; some made revisions in both drafting as well as post-drafting phases, and some, who spent a long time before starting on the drafting process, made fewer revisions. Based on the distance analysis of the drafting phase, there was no difference in the number of distant revisions (with a distance of more than one word) between the two groups. However, there was a significant difference in the number of immediate revisions (with no distance); novices made more immediate revisions than experts. When revisions were excluded for ST addition, novices had lesser distant revisions, indicating that experts revised more mostly to improve textual quality. Although there is no difference in the number of distant revisions with a distance of more than ten words, novices more often revised in an effort to add missing content or correct grammar. In terms of revision scope, lexical substitution was the most frequent revision in both groups. Syntactical substitution was lesser in novices than in experts, especially in the drafting phase. One expert, however, focused on syntactical substitution in the post-drafting phase in order to improve textual flow. Novices made more grammatical substitutions in the drafting phase. There were some experts who did not make any grammatical corrections during the drafting phase, but did so afterward. This indicates that experts tend to prioritize lexical and syntactical substitutions over grammatical substitutions. Moreover, the combined share of word and phrase revisions was over 70% in both groups, although novices had more phrase revisions. However, below-word revisions were found more in novices, and clause revisions in experts. The revision objectives are: i) transfer (accuracy and completeness based on ST), ii) content (revision with above-sentence focus), and iii) language (a sentence-focused revision). Transfer revisions were made mostly during the drafting phase and found slightly more in novices. Content revisions were made mostly by experts, all across the translation phase. Particularly in the post-drafting phase, all experts performed content revisions but some novices did not do any content revisions. Although thematic structures and sentence connections were most frequently revised by both groups, novices mostly focused on sentence linkers, whereas experts put more focus on thematic structures and explicitation. Mechanics accounted for a large portion of language revisions, and lexical tailoring was more frequent than terminology and collocation revisions in both groups. This study has limitations, considering the small number of participants. Nevertheless, the key findings from this study suggest significant differences between novices and experts in searching and self-revision activities during the translation process, which offers considerable pedagogical implications for translation teachers. In addition, this study has methodological implications, given that exploration of the translation process based on keystroke logging and screen recording data has not yet been attempted in domestic translation studies.
