멘델스존의 「엄격변주곡(Variations sérieuses), Op. 54」 에 대한 연구

Abstract

Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-1847) was a German composer of the 19thcentury Romantic period. Although he is a composer of the Romantic era, he is relatively conservative in his music, influenced by the Baroque and the Classical music. His music reveals the Romantic colors within traditional forms. Mendelssohn composed a variety of genres including orchestra music, chamber music, piano music, organ music, and religious music. And, many of his works written for piano. Mendelssohn's 「Variations sérieuses, Op. 54」 is one of the large-scaled piano works. This work, composed in 1841, consists of a theme and 17 variations. The theme in d minor is in a four-part texture, beginning with an upbeat. The 17 variations are divided into two parts: the first part (Variation 1-7) being the strict variations, with the measure length and the harmonic structure being the same as those of the theme; The second part (Variation 8-17) is freer than the first part, appearing with various tempos, changes in modes, and dynamic contrasts. In these variations, Mendelssohn used various idiomatic figurations, and contrapuntal devices along with features of the Romantic period such as use ofdissonances, and rapid dynamic changes. This paper looks into the 19th-century Romanticism, and discusses and Mendelssohn’s life and the musical characteristics revealed in his piano music. And it analyzes his piano work 「Variations sérieuses, Op. 54」 to find out how Mendelssohn embraces music from the past and incorporates it within his own romantic writing.;19세기 낭만주의 시대는 감정적인 자유로움과 개성을 추구한 시대이다. 프랑스혁명, 산업혁명과 같은 사회적 상황들로 인해 일반 시민 계층이 경제적으로 성장하는 계기가 있었고, 이들이 곧 새롭게 음악을 향유하며 후원하는 계층이 되었다. 이러한 사회적 흐름에 따라 공공음악회와 가정에서 열리는 작은 규모의 살롱음악회가 성행하게 되어, 이 시기에는 공공음악회용 큰 규모의 음악과 살롱음악회용 작은 규모의 음악이 많이 작곡되었다. 멘델스존(Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, 1809-1847)은 19세기 낭만주의 시대에 활동한 독일의 작곡가로서, 다방면에 뛰어난 두각을 보이며 활동하였다. 그는 관현악곡, 실내악, 피아노음악, 오르간음악, 종교음악 등 다양한 장르의 음악을 작곡하였으며, 그 중 피아노를 위해 많은 작품을 작곡하였다. 멘델스존은 낭만주의 시대의 작곡가임에도 불구하고 과한 낭만성을 표출하지 않은 보수적 경향의 작곡가로서, 그의 음악에서는 전통적인 형식과 낭만적인 정서가 결합되어있음을 찾아볼 수있다. 본 논문에서 다루는 멘델스존의 「엄격변주곡(Variations sérieuses), Op. 54」은 그가 남긴 피아노음악 중 큰 규모에 속한다. 이 작품은 1841년에 작곡되었고, 주제와 17개의 변주로 구성되어 있다. 주제는 못갖춘마디로 시작하는 d단조의 4성부 짜임새를 가진다. 17개의 변주는 크게 두 부분으로 나누어지는데, 제 1부분(변주1-7)은 엄격 변주들로서 마디 길이와 화성의 진행이 주제와 동일하게 나타나며, 제 2부분(변주8-17)은 제 1부분보다 자유로워져 다양한 빠르기와 장·단조의 변화, 마디 길이의 확장이 나타난다. 이 작품에서는 장식 변주, 리듬 변주, 푸가의 사용과 같은 전통적인 작곡기법들이 드러나며, 불협화음, 반음계의 사용, 급격한 다이내믹의 대조와 같은 낭만시대의 음악적 특징이 함께 사용되었다. 본 논문에서는 19세기의 낭만주의에 관하여 알아보고, 멘델스존의 생애를 살펴본다. 그리고 그의 피아노음악 중 피아노 소나타, 무언가, 프렐류드와 푸가를 중심 으로 그의 음악적 특징을 살펴본 후, 「엄격변주곡(Variations sérieuses), Op. 54」 을 연구 분석하여 멘델스존이 과거의 음악을 어떻게 수용하였고, 수용한 바에 어떠한 낭만적 정서를 담아 자신의 어법으로 구현하였는지 파악하고자 한다.
