학위 논문 작성을 위한 헤지 표현 ‘-을 수 있다’ 교육 방안

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to analyze the genre-centric properties of thesis for the preparation of learners focused on academia and to find out educational method of '-을 수 있다' expression which appears most frequently among the Hedge expressions which are rhetoric technique used when preparing a thesis. International students in the Republic of Korea considers reading section as the most difficult section when studying. However, the ones who take degree courses in the Republic of Korea must write a thesis to receive a degree. And they should follow the customary structure and rhetoric expressions of frequently used by the members of scholastic community when writing a thesis. However, International students who lack the ability related to Korean and writing has no option but to face difficulty when writing a thesis. The most typical expression among the rhetoric expressions of a thesis is Hedge expression. Hedge expression refers to an expression used when making a statement in a relaxed manner and not in a conclusive manner. Writers can protect one's dignity and persuade the readers at the same time by using Hedge expression. Therefore, Hedge expression education is required for learners focused on academia to write a persuasive thesis. '-을 수 있다' is a Hedge expressions widely used in a thesis. However, there are only few researches that focused on the in-depth discussion and educational method focused on '-을 수 있다' Hedge expression. Thus, the study has come up with an educational method and data revision method of '-을 수 있다' Hedge expression for thesis preparation bases on the analysis on the thesis genre and academia-centric textbook. Chapter 1 reveals the purpose and the necessity of the study and reviewed preceding studies on Hedge expression conducted in the Republic of Korea. The review showed that there were only few studies about the subject and most of the studies only examined the meaning and that the function of Hedge expression or revealed the frequency and combination type. Especially, there were very few studies that focused on specific expressions and educational methods. Chapter 2 came up with a professor study model and a method for guiding a writing based on genre-centric approach. Also, the study organized the functions and the types of Hedge expression, and prepared the theoretical foundation of educational method by understanding the meaning and the form of '-을 수 있다'. In Chapter 3, the study selected 5 different types of Korean academic textbook and suggested the standard for analysis for the purpose of preparing educational material of '-을 수 있다' Hedge expression. The result revealed that all writing textbooks were suggesting expression education that can be seen ad Hedge expression. However, systematic education was absent. The study suggested the way to revise material for Hedge expression education based on the abovementioned problem. The study prepared the class of '-을 수 있다' Hedge expression required for preparing a thesis and prepared class material based in professor•learning model of genre-centric reading education. Existing textbooks and thesis were restructured according to the analysis standard prepared in Chapter 3 for educational material required for guidance. The study specifically suggested learning activity where genre-centric reading education can be applied. The study is meaningful as the study restructured the educational method and educational material of '-을 수 있다' Hedge expression that appear most frequently under a situation where in-depth understanding of specific Hedge expression is absent. However, the study has a limit that the study only targeted '-을 수 있다' among various Hedge expressions and that the study did not verify the utility and problem of the educational method by applying it to an actual class setting. When future studies prepare and establish educational methods and materials of various Hedge expressions for the application in actual class setting, the studies may contribute to the improvement of thesis preparation capability of Korean learners.;본 연구는 학문 목적 학습자들의 학위 논문 작성을 위해 학위 논문의 장르적 특성을 분석하고 학위 논문을 작성할 때 사용되는 수사적 기법인 헤지 표현 중 최고 빈도로 등장하는 ‘-을 수 있다’의 교육 방안을 모색하는 데 목적이 있다. 국내 유학생들은 학업을 수행할 때 쓰기 영역을 가장 어렵다고 생각한다. 그런데 국내 학위 과정의 학습자들은 학위 취득을 위해 논문을 반드시 작성해야 하며 학위 논문을 작성할 때는 학술 공동체의 구성원들이 관습적으로 사용하는 구조와 수사적 표현을 따라야 한다. 하지만 한국어 능력과 글에 대한 이해가 부족한 유학생들은 학위 논문 작성에 어려움을 겪을 수밖에 없다. 논문의 수사적 표현 중 가장 대표적인 것이 헤지(hedge) 표현이다. 헤지 표현은 논문의 저자가 자신의 의견이나 주장을 단정적으로 표현하지 않고 완화하여 진술할 때 사용하는 표현이다. 헤지 표현을 사용함으로써 저자는 자신의 체면을 보호할 수 있고, 독자를 효과적으로 설득할 수 있다. 따라서 학문 목적 학습자들이 설득력 있는 학위 논문을 작성하기 위해서는 헤지 표현 교육이 필요하다. ‘-을 수 있다’는 학위 논문에서 압도적으로 많이 사용되는 헤지 표현이다. 그런데 헤지 표현에 ‘-을 수 있다’를 대상으로 한 깊이 있는 논의와 교육 방안에 대한 연구를 찾아볼 수 없었다. 이에 본 연구는 학위 논문의 장르 분석과 학문 목적 교재 분석을 바탕으로 학위 논문 작성을 위한 헤지 표현 ‘-을 수 있다’의 교육 방안과 자료 수정 방안을 구성하였다. 1장에서는 연구의 목적과 필요성을 밝히고, 헤지 표현의 국내 선행 연구를 검토하였다. 선행 연구를 살펴본 결과 연구의 수가 많지 않았으며 대부분의 연구들이 헤지 표현의 의미와 기능을 고찰하거나 빈도와 결합 형태를 밝히는 데에 그쳤다는 것을 확인하였다. 특히 특정 헤지 표현을 집중적으로 분석한 연구와 교육 방안에 대한 연구가 부족하였다. 2장에서는 장르 중심 접근법을 중심으로 교수·학습 모형과 쓰기 지도 방안을 고찰하였다. 또 헤지 표현의 기능과 유형을 정리하고 ‘-을 수 있다’의 의미와 형태를 파악하여 교육 방안의 이론적 토대를 마련하였다. 3장에서는 헤지 표현 ‘-을 수 있다’의 교육 자료를 구성하기 위해 5종의 학문 목적 한국어 교재를 선정하고 분석 기준을 제시하였다. 교재 분석 결과 모든 학문 목적 쓰기 교재에서 헤지 표현이라고 볼 수 있는 표현 교육을 제시하고 있었으나 체계적인 교육이 부재함을 확인하였다. 교재의 문제점을 바탕으로 헤지 표현 교육을 위한 자료 수정 방안을 제시하였다. 4장에서는 장르 중심 쓰기 교육의 교수·학습 모형을 기반으로 학위 논문 작성을 위한 헤지 표현 ‘-을 수 있다’의 수업을 구성하고 수업 자료를 마련하였다. 지도에 필요한 교육 자료는 3장에서 마련한 교재 분석 기준에 맞게 기존 교재와 실제 논문을 재구성하였으며 장르 중심 쓰기 교육을 적용할 수 있는 학습 활동을 구체적으로 제시하였다. 이상의 연구는 특정 헤지 표현에 대한 심층적인 고찰이 부족한 상황에서 최고빈도로 등장하는 헤지 표현 ‘-을 수 있다’의 교육 방안과 교육 자료를 구성하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 그러나 다양한 헤지 표현 중에서 ‘-을 수 있다’만을 대상으로 했다는 것과 실제 수업에 적용하여 교육 방안의 효용성을 검증하지 못하고 문제점을 확인하지 못했다는 것이 본 연구의 한계점으로 지적될 수 있다. 앞으로의 연구에서 다양한 헤지 표현의 교육 방안이 마련되고 자료가 구축되어 실제 수업에 적용하여 분석한다면 학문 목적 한국어 학습자의 학위 논문 작성 능력 향상에 기여할 수 있을 것이다.
