Abstract
;This study would investigate the impacts of work-home conflicts in working moms with children in childhood on depression and verify the regulating effects of social supports (instrumental support, informational support, emotional support, and sociable support) to understand the importance of their mental health and provide the ground for practical intervention. The research questions of this study are: first, “Do the working mom’s work-home conflicts (work-family conflict and work-parenting conflict) affect depression?”; and second, “Do the social supports (instrumental support, informational support, emotional support, and sociable support) play roles in the relationship between the working mom’s work-home conflicts and depression?” The subjects of the analysis are 629 working moms with children in childhood, who responded to the questionnaire in the 10th Panel Study on Korean Children of Korea Institute of Child Care & Education in 2017. For the verification of the research model, a regression analysis was conducted, utilizing SPSS 25.0. The main research results of this study are summarized as follows: First, work-family conflict and work-parenting conflict had positive impacts on depression. In other words, the deepened role conflict due to work-family conflict and work-parenting conflict increased the level of depression. Second, in the impact of work-family conflict on depression, instrumental support, informational support and emotional support of social supports had negative impacts; however, they did not have statistically significant impacts as moderating variables. In other words, it was found that the level of depression would not significantly be lowered by instrumental support, informational support and emotional support for working moms with children in childhood, who were experiencing work-family conflict. And yet, sociable support of social supports had a negative (-) impact and had a statistically significant impact as a moderating variable as well. In other words, it was found that the level of depression could significantly be lowered by sociable support for working moms with children in childhood, who were experiencing work-family conflict. Third, instrumental support, informational support, emotional support and sociable support of social supports all had negative impacts in the impact of work-parenting conflict on depression; however, there were no statistically significant impacts as moderating variables. In other words, the level of depression did not decrease significantly even if social supports were made for working moms with children in childhood, who were experiencing work-parenting conflict. The research implications according to the above main analysis results are as follows: First, until now, most domestic studies comprehensively investigated work-home conflicts while there were few studies dividing them into work-family conflict and work-parenting conflict. Thus, this study has a significance that it divided the independent variable, work-home conflicts into work-family conflict and work-parenting conflict to judge the system for work-life balance, which remains perfunctory with a big gap from reality, despite values are changing more realistically. Second, this study subdivided and analyzed the variables of four sub-factors of social supports, including instrumental support, informational support, emotional support, and sociable support, which could lower the working mom’s depression level. This study has a significance that it reconfirmed and summed up empirical social supports necessary for working moms. Third, this study found that depression in working moms with children in childhood, who were experiencing the work-family conflict of work-home conflicts, was regulated by the sociable support of social supports. Thus, it is necessary to develop and introduce a program for sociable support confirmed to buffer the impact of depression. Fourth, as the proportion of working moms continuously increases with the increase of double-income families, the need for women’s work-life balance is continuously raised. Nevertheless, policies and systems for work-life balance focus on women’s performance of roles at both work and home rather than their self-realization or the enhancement of the quality of their lives. Thus, this study can contribute to enhancing the quality of working moms by investigating social supports that reduce their depression due to work-home conflicts.
