‘되기’를 통한 신체의 재형상화

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to discuss the process wherethrough diverse values seek their subjectivity based on the entangled body, departing from the conventional definition of the body. Through the socialization, we would follow the universal norms about the body where various cultural codes are inscribed. The researcher has found a passive and incompetent self-ego, while pursuing a stable life by fixing the identity due to the fear of departing from the institution. The researcher would perceive that what is deemed natural would act as an exclusive standard for others, stiffening our thinking. Hence, the researcher attempted to explore the body that could contain a flexible and multi-layered identity. For this purpose, the researcher attempted to overcome the dualism fixing our identity by reviewing the post-structuralist theories. Gilles Deleuze interprets the body not as a fixed state but as variable one changing according to the layout of desire and surroundings. He suggests ‘becoming’ as means of departing from the routine identity to transform his self-ego. He helped to find the differences within our body or a combination of the heterogenous bodies neither identified nor imitated. Furthermore, the researcher attempted to overthrow the logic of the transposition of the body according to Elizabeth Grosz and Rosi Braidotti’s feminist view. They thought that the point where differences of beings occur is sex, and thereby, that the boundary between sexes would be liquid and therefore, that the desires (sexuality), identity and life style would be diversified. In addition, they attempted to understand that our body not only as an ecological being but also embodies culture connotes multi-layered differences, being opened for ‘becoming’. Based on the study of such theoretical thinking, the researcher attempted to produce a body of work. To the researcher, the clay and the glaze were proper media to express the points where the researcher would imagine the specific body experienced by her. While the researcher is working on it, she could find the meaning of living an indeterminate world with the body. Namely, the researcher could face a new herself in others’ looks through various relations (blocks of ‘becoming’) between the body and the world, and therefrom, could find a subjectivity and an energy of life. In the process where the researcher was deepening the work, she would review the works of the artists who experimented the limits of the body in various ways to overcome the frame of predicating the body. The body they implemented was the body revealing an unknown value and expanded desire because fantastic and heterogenous beings are combined. In Rebecca Horn’s work, the body is expanded through diverse media physically and conceptually to communicate with the world actively. Through Mattew Barney’s work, the researcher could confirm that the negative binding of the body would be converted ironically into a creativity, and thus, art would be an occasion for dismantling the boundary surrounding the body. Through this study, the researcher could view the body not as an uncertain and faithless sense but as a valuable asset informing us of other things contacting it and reinforcing our energy. Thus, the researcher wishes to be reborn into a being continuing the flow of the energy. This study is significant in that the uncertainty and variability of the body and the world would not cause depression and lethargy but act as a positive and creative origin. ; 본 연구는 고정된 사회적 기준에 따라 몸을 정의하는 관점에서 벗어나, 다양한 가치들이 얽힌 몸을 토대로 주체성을 찾아가는 과정을 담은 논고이다. 사회화를 거치면서 여러 문화적 코드들이 새겨지는 몸을 통해 우리는 보편적인 규범을 따르는 존재가 된다. 연구자는 제도에서 벗어나는 것에 대한 두려움으로 인해 정체성을 고착화하고 안정된 삶을 살아가던 중, 수동적이고 무력해진 자신을 발견하였다. 그러면서 당연한 이치라고 생각하는 것들이 누군가에겐 배타적 기준으로 작용될 수 있으며, 우리의 사고를 경직시킬 수 있다는 사실을 문제로 인식하게 되었다. 따라서 연구자는 하나로 고정되지 않은 다층적인 정체성을 담아낼 수 있는 몸에 대해 탐구하고자 하였다. 이와 같은 연구 목적에 따라 우선 우리의 정체성을 고정시키는 이원론을 극복하고 몸을 재해석한 후기구조주의 철학자들의 이론을 살펴보았다. 질 들뢰즈(Gilles Deleuze)는 몸을 고정된 존재태가 아닌 흐르는 욕망과 주변의 배치에 따라 힘이 달라질 수 있는 가변적인 것으로 해석한다. 그는 타성에 젖은 정체성을 탈피하고 새로운 관계 속에서 자신을 탈바꿈하는 방식으로 ‘되기(becoming)’를 제안한다. 동일시도 모방도 아닌 되기는 이질적인 신체들의 결합으로부터 생성되는 내 안의 차이를 발견하게 해주었다. 나아가 연구자는 엘리자베스 그로츠(Elizbeth Grosz)와 로지 브라이도티(Rosi Braidotti)의 여성주의적 관점을 따라 성차화된 몸이 견고한 이항 논리를 전복시킬 수 있음을 밝히고자 했다. 이들은 존재의 차이가 발생하는 지점을 성(性)으로 보고, 성차화된 주체를 규정하는 경계가 유동적임을 밝힘으로써 욕망(섹슈얼리티), 정체성, 삶의 방식이 다양해질 수 있다고 보았다. 또한, 생태적 존재일 뿐만 아니라 문화를 체현하는 우리의 몸은 그 자체로 다층적 차이를 내포하고, ‘되기’에 열려있는 존재임을 이해하고자 하였다.

이론적 연구가 바탕이 되어 연구자는 도자 작업을 전개하였다. 연구자에게 점토와 유약은 연구자가 몸으로 경험한 구체적인 기억들과 몸에 관해 상상할 수 있는 지점들을 표현하기에 적절한 매체가 되었다. 작업을 하면서 연구자는 비결정적인 세계를 몸으로 살아간다는 것의 의미를 찾을 수 있었다. 그 의미는 몸과 세계를 이어주는 여러 관계들(되기의 블록)을 통해 타인의 모습에서 새로운 나를 마주하고 그로부터 주체성을 발견하며, 삶의 에너지를 얻는 데에 있다. 연구를 심화하는 과정에서 정체성을 단정짓는 틀을 극복하고자 다양한 방식으로 신체의 한계를 실험하는 예술가들의 작품을 살펴보았다. 그들이 구현한 신체는 환상적이고 이질적인 존재들이 결합되어 아직 발견되지 않은 미지의 가치와 확장된 욕망을 드러내는 신체다. 레베카 호른(Rebecca Horn)의 작업에서는 다양한 매체를 통해 신체를 물리적으로 또는 개념적으로 확장하는 것이 주체로 하여금 세계와 적극적으로 소통하게 한다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 매튜 바니(Matthew Barney)의 작업을 통해 신체에 부과되는 부정적인 구속이 역설적이게도 창조성으로 전환될 수 있음을 확인하였고, 그로 인해 예술이 신체를 둘러싼 경계를 해체하는 계기가 될 수 있음을 알게 되었다. 본 연구를 통해 연구자는 신체의 감각을 신뢰할 수 없는 불확실한 감각이 아니라, 다른 존재들에 닿아있음을 알려주고 신체의 에너지를 강화시키는 소중한 자산으로 바라보게 되었다. 이에 따라 연구자는 앞으로의 삶에 있어 그 에너지의 흐름을 지속시키는 존재로 거듭나길 기대한다. 연구자는 몸과 세계의 불확실성과 가변성이 우울과 무기력을 야기하는 것이 아니라 긍정적이고 창조적인 근원으로 작용할 수 있다는 것을 발견한 점에 본고의 의의를 두고자 한다.
