걸러내지 못한 기억

Abstract

This study is a record of recognizing the existence of the inner 'unfiltered memory' and filtering it into a work. I realized that specific memories imprinted in the unconscious, suddenly emerge as suffering or pain initiated by a stimulation, then show their existence in both mental and physical states of a being. This realization led me to perceive that trauma-like memory existed in my unconsciousness and question the form of memory that was accompanied by pain. Therefore, I as the researcher first examine how the memory of the past affects the subject and then examine how the memory is expressed and what it means. Based on this, I would like to express changing emotions and attitudes through my work and extend my study to how it connects to inner healing eventually. Accordingly, I newly defined the trauma, the memory imprinted in the unconscious, as 'unfiltered memory' and try to understand the form of memory called from the unconscious to the consciousness based on the meaning of the memory and its expression presented by Marcel Proust. These memories are divided into “voluntary memories” and “involuntary memories,” and based on Gilles Deleuze's “involuntary memories,” they convey hidden truths of unconscious memories. Through this research process, the subject perceives 'unfiltered memory' and recognizes the necessity of the filtering action and tries to heal the memory through art. Memory Healing, based on Gestalt and Gestalt Therapy, talks about why memory healing is necessary and visually interprets the healing process through the filtering of the functional meaning and form of the ‘memory net’ in the artwork. In this way, the net in art work helps to face the memory of the past, stimulates a change of perception, and as a result, protects the inner self. Also, this research considers the meaning of art's healing based on the works of writers such as Louise Bourgeois and Cristina Iglesias who express healing and rest in their work. This paper is a record of a journey that contains changing of a being as it encounters its internal memories. The purpose of this research is to delve deeply into the wounds caused by neglect, disregard and emotional problems and seek for possible healing by looking directly into the inner mind. I, as the researcher, am at the starting point of this healing journey, and intend to provide an opportunity for weaving a strong and wide net inside one’s more maturely changed inner mind.;본 논문은 내면의 ‘걸러내지 못한 기억’의 존재를 인지하고 이를 작품으로 걸러내기까지의 기록이다. 연구자는 무의식 속에 각인된 특정한 기억이 자극을 통해 갑작스럽게 고통이나 아픔으로 살아나오는 경험을 시작으로 그 기억들은 자신의 존재를 정신적, 육체적으로 나타낸다는 것을 깨달았다. 이러한 경험은 본인의 무의식 속에 트라우마와 같은 기억이 존재하고 있었음을 지각하게 되었으며, 지각함과 동시에 고통스럽게 표출되어지는 기억의 형태에 의문을 가지게 되었다. 따라서 연구자는 과거의 기억이 어떠한 방식으로 주체에게 영향을 주는지 먼저 살펴본 후, 기억이 표출되어지는 방식과 의미에 대해 고찰하고자 한다. 그리고 이를 기반으로 변화되는 감정과 태도를 작업과 결부하여 표현하면서, 결과적으로 내면의 치유까지 다다르는 연구를 하고자 한다. 이에 따라 연구자는 무의식 속 각인된 기억인 트라우마를 ‘걸러내지 못한 기억’으로 새롭게 정의하고 마르셀 프루스트(Marcel Proust)가 제시한 기억의 의미와 이의 표출 방식을 기반으로 무의식에서 의식으로 전환되는 기억의 형태에 대해 이해하고자 한다. 이러한 기억은 ‘자발적 기억’과 ‘비자발적 기억’ 나뉘어지며, 질 들뢰즈 (Gilles Deleuze)의‘무의지적 기억’을 토대로 무의식에 내재하는 기억이 지닌 숨겨진 진실에 대해 알아본다. 이러한 연구 과정을 통하여 연구자는 ‘걸러내지 못한 기억’을 지각하게 되면서 걸러내기 행위의 필요성을 인지하고 이를 예술로써 기억을 치유하고자 한다. 기억 치유는 게슈탈트(Gestalt)와 게슈탈트 치료(Gestalt Therapy)를 바탕으로 기억 치유가 필요한 이유에 대해 이야기하고 작품 속 ‘기억 그물’의 걸러내는 기능적 의미와 형태를 통해 치유되는 과정을 시각적으로 해석한다. 이처럼 작품 속 그물은 과거의 기억과 똑바로 마주하도록 도와주며 인식의 변화를 야기시키고 이의 결과로 내면을 스스로 보호할 수 있게 한다. 그리고 치유와 쉼을 담은 작가 루이스 부르주아(Louise Bourgeois)와 크리스티나 이글레시아스(Cristina Iglesias)의 작품을 토대로 예술이 가진 치유의 의미에 대해 고찰한다. 본 논문은 내면의 기억을 인지하게 되면서 변화되어지는 자신을 담은 여정의 기록이다. 외면하고 방치했던 상처와 감정들로 생겨난 문제들을 인지하고 치유할 수 있는 가능성에 대해 깊게 고찰하며 내면을 온전하게 바라보고자 한다. 여기서 연구자는 이 치유의 여정의 출발점에 위치하며, 이 연구를 토대로 보다 성숙하게 변화한 내면 속에 튼튼하고 넓은 그물을 엮어나갈 수 있는 계기를 마련해주는 데에 그 의미를 두고자 한다.
