비정상적 신체의 조형적 표현을 통한 정상과 비정상의 애매한 경계 연구

Abstract

급변하는 사회 속에 물질문명은 인간의 삶을 풍요롭게 만들었지만 현대인의 삶은 스트레스와 강박에 시달려 정신적 문제를 갖고 있는 경우가 많아지고 있다. 실제로 수많은 증후군과 공포증이 세분화 되고 새롭게 정의 되고 있다. 과연 우리는 온전한 정상으로 살아가고 있는가? 정상과 비정상을 나누는 기준은 무엇이며 현대사회에서 인간은 어떻게 존재하는가? 이러한 질문을 바탕으로 본 연구를 시작한다. 정상과 비정상을 나누는 것은 복잡하고 어려운 일이지만 사람들은 쉽게 가르려는 경우가 많다. 그리고 비정상으로 분리 되었을 때는 사회에서 낙인이 되어 타자화 되는 경우가 많다. 복잡한 현대사회에서 우리는 끊임없이 비정상을 정의하고 이를 배척한다. 그렇다면 역으로 정상은 무엇인가에 대한 질문을 던져본다. 정상의 정의는 명확하지 않음에도 불구하고 주체의 대립항을 생성하여 존재하는 방식으로 비정상이 아닌 어떠한 것으로 우리 사회에 자리 잡고 있다. 이러한 애매한 정상성의 정의에 대한 문제의식이 본 연구의 시발점이 된다. 정상성이란 절대적이지 않고 그 때 그 때 사회와 역사 속에서 형성된 권력 관계 속에서의 기준이라 미셀 푸코는 정의 하고 있다. 정상의 기준은 권력을 행사하기 위한 단지 통제의 수단으로 사용되어졌다는 미셀 푸코의 이론을 근거로 하여 본 논문은 기존의 관념으로 자리 잡고 있었던 정상이라는 이데올로기에 대한 전복 가능성을 이야기한다. 연구자는 정상과 비정상이라는 이분법적으로 분리 되어 있는 양극화가 아닌 혼재의 방법을 통해 새로운 정상성에 대한 질문을 던지며 우리 관념 속에 흑백논리로 자리 잡은 두 가지 가치에 대한 공존을 비정상적 신체 이미지를 사용하여 조형적 탐구를 통해 모색한다. 정상과 비정상 이라는 이분법적 요소가 혼재하는 방식으로 연구자의 작업은 진행된다. 연구자의 작업에 나타나는 비정상적 요소는 장애 혹은 병리적 신체를 매체로 조형적 표현을 한 것에 있고 이를 통하여 기존 전통적 예술의 미적 감상을 유도함으로서 양극화 된 요소의 공존과 역설을 통하여 정상과 비정상에 대한 우리 인식에 질문을 던지게 한다. 연구자 작업에 포함 되어있는 이러한 두 가지 가치의 혼재는 감상자에게 인지적 부조화를 유발하며 감각의 분열을 일으킨다. 감각의 분열은 기존의 비정상이라 여겨졌던 것들에 대한 타자성을 회복하고 고정된 정상이라는 이념을 전복하는 역할을 수행한다. 이러한 전복성은 주체를 위해 주체가 아닌 타자를 배제했던 관습 되어 온 이성우월주의에 대한 문제의식으로 야기 되었고 연구자는 비정상적 신체를 통한 조형적 미적 구현으로 새로운 정상성에 대한 탐구를 모색한다. 이를 통하여 연구자는 관념적으로 맹신하던 기존 정상성 즉 ‘선’에 대한 질문을 던지고 다양한 가치관에 대한 공존을 말하고자한다. ;In the rapidly changing society, although a material civilization has made human lives affluent, it has increased that contemporary people suffer from tremendous stress and are obsessed, thus faced with mental problems. In reality, numerous syndromes and phobias have been departmentalized and newly defined. Are we living wholly normally? What are the criteria to divide into normality and abnormality? How people exist in modern society? This study starts based on this question. Even though it is difficult to distinguish between normality and abnormality, we tend to conduct it easily. There are a great number of cases that when someone is perceived as an abnormality, then branded as an alien. In the complicated contemporary society, we consistently define what abnormality is and exclude what we regard as that. Then, conversely, I throw a question what is normality. Although the definition of normality is not clear, our society considers normality as something, which is not abnormality in the way of setting up the opposite clause of the subject. In terms of this unobvious definition of normality, I have a critical mind, therefore, set up this as this study’s research question. According to Michel Paul Foucault, normality is not absolute but just a criterion in power relations formed in society and history in that time. Bases on Foucault’s opinion that a criterion of normality is exploited as a control means to exercise power, this study suggests a possibility to break from the conventional ideology of normality. I throw the question on a new normality in the way of not the polarization that normality and abnormality are divided dichotomously but the fusion of them, and examine the coexistence of the two notions, normality and abnormality, that we have differentiated between them in black and white through a sculptural approach. This study is conducted in the way of mixing dichotomous factors of normality and abnormality. To wit, by sculpturally expressing elements of abnormality through disabled or pathologic bodies as media, this study derives aesthetic feelings of the conventional art, which is elements of normality. This blend of the two ideas causes appreciators cognitive dissonance and dissociation of sensibility. The dissociation of sensibility recovers alien characteristics, which have been conventionally regarded as abnormal, and plays a role to break from the fixed ideas of normality. This breaking provides an opportunity to pose a critical mind of rationalism used to not focusing on subjects but excluding others for subjects, and to explore a novel normality through sculptural aesthetic performance based on abnormal bodies. Through this performance, this study aims to cast a doubt about the blind faith of the conventional normality, in other words good, and to suggest the coexistence of diverse ideas and values.
