Abstract
For social animals, intra-group and inter-group interactions can reflect how species maintain their social structure. However, social interactions of species living in small groups such as pair-living species have received less attention, as they have been thought to be less variable and complex. To understand social dynamics in a pair-living primate, the Javan gibbon, I investigated 1) intra-group social interactions in female-male and parent-offspring dyads, 2) inter-group social interactions, and 3) impacts of inter-group encounters on intra-group behaviors in Gunung Halimun-Salak National Park in Indonesia from November 2014 to July 2016. My results showed that Javan gibbons are socially dynamic in that they interact with their family members. Adult males had an important role in both pair bond maintenance and parental care of juveniles. Adult males groomed females more than the opposite when infants became independent and females presumably neared cycling. This indicates that males invested in maintaining the pair bond more than females. Furthermore, adult males were the ones grooming other individuals the most, especially juveniles, indicating enhanced paternal care during the prolonged juvenile periods of Javan gibbons. Adult females carried and breast-fed infants and transferred food to them. In general, infants were responsible for maintaining close proximity with mothers, even though they approached mothers less during and after weaning. Food solicitation and transfer in Javan gibbons were always initiated by infants. The food solicitation rate decreased as infant age increased, with a total cessation before weaning. Food transfer involved food items that were difficult for infants to obtain by themselves and food items that were preferred by their parents. These results showed that infant Javan gibbons may acquire information on diet and food processing skills rather than additional nutrients from their mothers. I found almost no evidence, or a low level, of parent-infant/juvenile conflicts in Javan gibbons and it seems plausible given their long developmental periods and gradual weaning. My results also revealed that adult male Javan gibbons were the main participants in inter-group aggressive interactions (i.e. chasing). They participated more in inter-group interactions when cycling females or dependent infants were present than when females were pregnant or infants were independent. This variation in behavior supports the fact that males defend mates and infants. Furthermore, males participated more when there were more fruits available. While males were more likely to participate when more opponents participated, females showed a tendency to sing more when there were singing opponents. The probability of winning an inter-group encounter was higher only when cycling females were present, here as well supporting the mate defense hypothesis. The intensity of space use or aggression had no effects on the outcome of inter-group encounters. The results highlight that mate and infant defense can be critical for Javan gibbons, especially in view of their pair-living system and long development periods as well as long interbirth intervals. Finally, I found that inter-group interactions affect intra-group behaviors in direct (during encounters), immediate (within 1 hour after encounters) and possibly longer (at the end of a day with encounters) ways. Javan gibbons significantly altered their activity budgets during inter-group encounters: they foraged less and were less active than when there was no encounter. Grooming within pairs decreased following inter-group encounters compared to a matched-control period. However, I did not find any effect of the intensity of aggression, outcome, length of, or female participation in inter-group encounters on grooming within pairs in the hour after an encounter. Male gibbons slept farther away from the inter-group encounter location after aggressive inter-group encounters than after neutral encounters. These results indicate that inter-group interactions are costly in Javan gibbons. Furthermore, defending mates during inter-group interactions might be more important than increasing affiliative interactions after inter-group interactions in pair-living species without cooperative breeding. These results suggested that intra- and inter-group interactions reflected Javan gibbons’ pair-living system and slow life history. In a closed social system, Javan gibbon females function as limited resource, and therefore males’ role in social investment is required. This study contributes to understand the social dynamics of a small group living primates, the Javan gibbon.
