Ralph Vaughan Williams의 「Four Hymns for Tenor with Viola Obbligato」에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 피아노 반주가 들어간 독창곡에 독주 악기가 추가로 덧붙여진 오블리가토(obbligato)의 정의를 면밀히 밝히고 오블리가토의 발전과정을 탐구한다. 그리고 19세기에서 20세기의 영국의 음악적 배경을 살펴보고 발전 과정과 특징을 살펴본다. 이어서 영국의 작곡가 레이프 본 윌리엄스(Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1872-1958)의 생애와 활동에 대해 살펴보고, 그의 작품 「네 개의 찬양」(Four Hymns) 에 대해 분석한다. 오늘날 음악 사전에서 오블리가토는 ‘생략할 수 없는 부분’으로 정의한다. 그러나 오블리가토의 기원과 어원을 탐구해보면, 더 많은 의미를 발견할 수 있다. 16세기의 작곡가이자 음악이론가 조제포 차를리노(Gioseffo Zarlino, 1517-1590)는 ‘엄격 푸가’를 가리켜 ‘오블리기(oblighi)’라고 지칭했으며, 17세기의 음악학자 세바스찬 브로사드(Sébastian Brossard, 1655-1730)의 『음악 사전』에서는 오블리가토를 ‘협주곡(concertante)’과 동의어로 정의했다. 17세기의 작곡가 비발디(Antonio Vivaldi, 1678-1741)와 바흐(Johann Sebastian Bach, 1685-1750)는 오블리가토를 ‘현악 합주’라는 말로 사용했다. 18세기의 작곡가 칼 필립 엠마누엘 바흐(Carl Philipp Emnauel Bach, 1714-1788)는 오블리가토로 목관악기를 사용했는데, 이 시기에는 통주저음과 성악 성부에 독주 악기 성부가 추가되어 연주되었다. 현대에는 오블리가토를 더 넓은 의미로 음악적 선율, 특별한 연주 실력이 요구되는 것, 특별한 악기의 사용, 오르간 페달의 사용 등으로 발전되어 정의하기도 한다. 17세기의 영국음악은 헨리 퍼셀(Henry Purcell, 1659-1695)의 음악이 주류가 되었고 퍼셀의 죽음 이후 침체기에 접어들었다. 특히 19세기 중반 빅토리아 왕조 시대에 중산층의 문화 향유 증가로 독일음악을 비롯한 살롱 음악이 성행하여 영국 전통 음악은 더 쇠퇴하게 된다. 이에 영국 작곡가들은 19세기 말, 민속 음악을 수집하고 연구하며 민족음악 부흥에 집중함으로써 본토 음악을 창작하고 발전시키게 된다. 이로써 영국의 독창적인 작품이 탄생하게 된다. 영국 작곡가 레이프 본 윌리엄스(Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1872-1958)는 작곡과 역사학을 전공했으며 영국 전역을 다니며 영국 민요를 수집했다. 그는 합창에도 지대한 관심을 보였으며, 또한 교회음악의 발전을 위해 끊임없이 노력했다. 본 윌리엄스의 「네 개의 찬양」(Four Hymns)은 테너를 위한 곡으로서 피아노 반주와 비올라 오블리가토(viola obbligato)가 함께 연주된다. 총 4곡으로 구성되어 있으며, 1914년경 작곡되었다. 이 작품에서는 선법이 자주 사용되었으며, 영국 음악의 특징인 파버든(faburden)이 자주 등장한다. 본 연구자는 오블리가토의 의의를 면밀히 살펴보고자 하였다. 성악과 기악이 혼합된 양식의 곡을 해석할 시, 오블리가토에 관한 연구가 상당한 도움을 줄 것이라 간주하고 탐구하였다. 또한 오블리가토가 사용된 곡을 실례로 분석해보기 위해 영국 음악의 역사적 배경과 윌리엄스의 「네 개의 찬양」을 연구하고자 하였다.;This thesis examines the definition of obbligato, and analyzes the evolution of obbligato. Then, this thesis investigates the life and musical activities of the British composer, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), and analyzes his musical work 「Four Hymns」. In the Harvard dictionary of music, obbligato is defined as a part that can not be omitted. However, the origin and etymology of obbligato have more implications. The sixteenth-century composer and music theorist, Gioseffo Zarlino(1517-1590), referred to the 'strict fugue' as 'oblighi' and the seventeenth-century musicologist Sébastian Brossard(1655-1730) defines the obbligato as synonymous with the concertante. The composers of the seventeenth century, Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) and Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), used obbligato as the string ensemble. Carl Philipp Emnauel Bach (1714-1788), an eighteenth-century composer, used woodwinds as an obbligato, during which time a solo instrument was added to the basso continuo when vocal part was played. These days, obbligato is defined more broadly, meaning a musical melody, the need for virtuosic skills, the use of special musical instruments, and the use of organ pedals. From the end of the 19th century to the twentieth century, musical nationalism was popular in England. Composers discovered and collected folk music originated from their country and fused the folk elements in their musical works resulting in the creation of original works. British composer, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), who majored in composition and history, traveled throughout the UK and collected English folk songs. He showed great interest in choral music, and constantly strived for the development of church music. 「Four Hymns」 of Ralph Vaughan Williams is a musical work for tenor, played with piano accompaniment and viola obbligato. 「Four Hymns」composed around 1914, consists of four songs. In these songs, Vaughan Williams frequently uses modes and the faburden, a feature of British music.
