Abstract
(Sonata for Cello in D minor Op.40)를 연구, 분석하였다. This thesis aims to study and analyze the life and works of Dmitri Shostakovich, focusing on his Sonata in D minor, Op. 40 for Cello and Piano. D. Shostakovich is one of the composers representing Russia in the mid-1900s. He left behind masterpieces across genres, including opera, symphony and chamber music as well as theatrical and cinematic music. Most of his contemporary composers defected to the West when they were required to perform music that embodied the realism of socialism. Embracing avant-garde music and the modern musical elements of the West, he succeeded in building his own music world through instrumental music within a socialist system where new musical trials were hardly accepted. Shostakovich's sole cello sonata, Sonata in D minor, Op. 40 for Cello and Piano, which is the focus of study in this paper, was composed in 1934. This work was born in a politically chaotic period where the rapid transition to socialism took place by Lenin and Stalin. Despite Stalin's pressure for socialist music, Shostakovich composed the piece to be free from any propaganda, showing elements of a conscious and progressive musical tendency. Composed of four movements, the piece seems to follow a typical sonata through the use of sonata and rondo form, ternary forms and compound ternary forms. However, Shostakovich's effort to break away from the traditional format is seen in the second movement applying a fast tempo compound ternary form, and in the third movement, which employs a slow tempo ternary form. Shostakovich's progressive elements of musical composition are also shown throughout the entire sonata, in the use of chromatic progression, chromatic modulation, non-functional harmonic progression, compound time, and by the use of cello's diverse performing methods such as Pizzicato, Harmonics, Glissando, and Con Sordino. The above analysis leads us to see that Shostakovich not just followed the formal structure of romance in the late 19th century but also incorporated modern musical elements in his masterpiece, Sonata in D minor, Op. 40 for Cello and Piano.
